Chapter 131

Cassian was dead set on taking Aurelia to the hospital.

Aurelia choked out, Cassian, you’re hurting me!”

He panicked and let go.

Aurelia quickly backed away, rubbing her reddened wrist. Her expression was cold, and her voice dripped with the same sarcasm he used to give her.

I never knew you were so nosy, she sneered. If you’ve got time to meddle in my business, why not show concern for Tessa instead?”

Aurelia snapped her gaze away, not willing to waste even a second more on him.

The sting on her hand was intense. She needed to get it treated at the hospital.

She stuck out her hand to hail a cab, completely ignoring Cassian’s emotional rollercoaster.

Cassian called Wesley, Bring the car around and take Aurelia to the hospital.”

If she won’t go with me, Wesley can take her instead,Cassian thought. As long as her injury gets taken care of, that’s enough.‘

But before Wesley could get there, a sleek red sedan pulled up.

Wade stopped right in front of Aurelia, rolled down the window, and called out, Ms. Corin, where are you headed? Need a lift?”

Normally, Aurelia wouldn’t ask Wade for help.

But right now, all she wanted was to escape her unstable exboyfriend, so she hopped into Wade’s car without a second thought.

Could you take me to the hospital?she asked.

Wade was more than happy to help.

When he heard she needed to go to the hospital, he asked with concern, What happened? Are you feeling okay?”

I burned my hand,Aurelia replied.

Wade didn’t waste a second. He floored it to the hospital, afraid any delay might worsen her wound.

Cassian just stood there, watching Aurelia climb into Wade’s car, the pain in his eyes almost selfinflicted.

Even after the car was long gone, he still couldn’t look away.

Chapter 131

His eyes narrowed, cold and shadowed with something dark and impossible to read.

It was like a huge fist clamped around his heart, leaving him breathless.

Wesley drove over, but when he didn’t see Aurelia, he asked Cassian, Where’s Ms. Corin?”

Cassian’s jaw tightened as he said, She left with someone else.”

Wesley fell silent, not daring to speak.

Aurelia’s burn wasn’t serious. Once the doctor took care of it, he prescribed her some ointment and anti- inflammatory medicine.

Wade never left her side the entire time.

Even when Aurelia insisted she could handle it herself, he just stuck around.

After they left the hospital, Wade insisted on giving her a ride to the office.

Aurelia wanted to buy Wade dinner to thank him, and he replied that he was free that day.

Perfect, let’s do it today,Aurelia agreed right away.

Since your hand’s injured, I’ll swing by after work and pick you up,Wade said.

Cool, see you then.”

Just as the clock hit quitting time, Wade called to say he was downstairs waiting for her.

For once, Aurelia didn’t work late. She headed out right on time, ready for dinner. She was finally able to give back the jacket Wade had lent her.

As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she saw Wade standing by the front entrance, waiting for her with a black umbrella in hand.

It’d been raining nonstop in Ashmont for more than ten days, and the air was muggy and damp.

Why didn’t you wait in the car?Aurelia asked, seeing his jacket was already damp from the rain.

I thought you might not have an umbrella, so I figured I’d meet you here,Wade said.

As he spoke, he held the umbrella over her head, letting his own shoulder get wet.

Aurelia didn’t want him to get soaked, so she scooted a little closer to him.

They shared the umbrella as they headed to the temporary parking spot by the road, where Wade’s car was waiting.

Aurelia had already made a reservation, so once they got in, she told him the restaurant’s address.

Wade unlocked his phone and handed it over. Can you handle the directions for me? My hands are full with

driving.”

No problem,Aurelia said, pulling up the navigation.

Just as she finished setting it up, a call came through.

Aurelia saw a familiar name pop up on the screen. It was Kyler Ackerley.

Could this be the Kyler that Scott wanted to introduce me to?Aurelia wondered.

This last name wasn’t exactly common, so the odds of there being another Kyler Ackerley were pretty slim.

But Aurelia still wasn’t sure.

Wade saw the call pop up on the car’s screen and hit the handsfree button, so Aurelia could hear everything

too.

Kyler’s voice came through the speakers. Hey, are you free for dinner tonight? I’m thinking of introducing you to a friend.”

Wade knew that, besides him, Kyler only had one other friend in Ashmont.

And that was the person Kyler liked.

If Wade hadn’t already made plans with Aurelia, he probably would’ve said yes.

But right then, he shot Kyler a quick reply, Let’s do it another time, I’m busy tonight.”

Kyler just said, Got it,then hung up.

Right after, Kyler dialed another number. When the call connected, his tone softened up a lot compared to just now.

It was much softer now.

Are you out yet?he asked.

Tessa was just stepping out. I’m at the entrance.”

Wait there,Wade said, then hung up and hopped out of the car.

He grabbed an umbrella and jogged over to the entrance to pick up Tessa.

Out front, the red sedan pulled around the roundabout, and Tessa spotted Wade and Aurelia inside.

They looked pretty cozy together, laughing and joking around.

Tessa’s brows immediately furrowed.

But as soon as she saw Kyler coming over with the umbrella, her frown disappeared, and she gave him her best smile. You’re here.”

After dinner, Wade drove Aurelia back to her place.

Thanks for putting up with me all day,Aurelia said, feeling a bit bad about it.

But Wade just said, It’s really no trouble at all. Honestly, I’m glad I could help. I hope you’ll give me more chances to help you out.”

Aurelia had always known Wade was a straightshooter. After all, he’d basically confessed his feelings on just their second meeting.

But right now, she just wasn’t in the mood for any romantic stuff, so she had no choice but to disappoint him.

After saying goodbye to Wade, Aurelia headed back to her place.

It was still early, so she decided to put in some overtime.

With the bidding meeting just around the corner, she couldn’t let herself relax for even a second.

But just as she fired up her laptop, her phone lit up with a new message.

It was from Cassian.

Here he goes again, Aurelia thought.

Cassian texted: [Unblock me on WhatsApp.]

Nutcase. Not worth my time, Aurelia muttered inwardly.

She didn’t even bother checking the message and just tossed her phone aside.

Cassian wasn’t about to give up that easily. Another message popped up. [Hurry up, I need to talk to you.]

Aurelia was getting annoyed and was about to turn her phone off when a third message popped up. [Are you taking the money for your hospital bills or not?]

Only an idiot would say no to free cash, Aurelia thought.

Besides, that was her medical bill. Why should Cassian get away with keeping her money?

I’ll take the money, then block him again, she thought.

Aurelia opened WhatsApp, unblocked Cassian, and shot him a message, which was straight to the point. [Transfer the money!]

But Cassian shot back: [Did you sign a wager contract with Samuel?]

Aurelia was speechless.

Why is he even keeping tabs on me?she thought. Oh, is he trying to gather intel for Tessa?‘

Aurelia replied: [Yeah, so what? What’s it to you? Quit stalling and just transfer the money.]

Cassian ignored her demand and texted: [Do you have any idea how risky this is? One wrong move and you could lose everything.]

Who doesn’t know how risky this is?Aurelia thought.

She’d seen it all, back when Cassian signed that wager contract with Evergreen Group.

Everyone said Cassian was crazy.

The management, investors, and even his own friends thought it was a bad idea.

Aurelia was the only one who stood by his side, fighting against the whole world with him.

She was absolutely certain that Cassian would win.

And she was right. Cassian won.

He made a name for himself, becoming the ultimate winner in that wager contract.

But now, when it was her turn to go all in, he was telling her to back out.

Is he afraid I’ll outshine Tessa?Aurelia scoffed inwardly.

Cassian asked: [Do you really want to win that badly?]

Aurelia answered: [If winning means it’ll make you and Tessa miserable, then I must win.]
