The Day Love Betrayed Me and Never the Plan 41

Chapter 41

The leopard’s bloodthirsty frenzy gradually subsided, and the air no longer felt as heavy and stifling.

Gradually, cold sweat started dripping down Chloe’s forehead, and her face looked awful.

She had just mastered this skill and was using her healing ability for the first time, still unfamiliar with it. She made many missteps along the way and wasted a great deal of energy.

Her head was spinning, but the man’s injuries were way too serious. If she wanted to wake him up, she worried she’d run out of power.

She wasn’t stupid. She wouldn’t put herself in danger.

She glanced at the man lying on the ground, then looked at the massive leopard still staring intently in his direction.

Feigning extreme exhaustion, she crumpled to the floor and said weakly, II really don’t have any strength left. Your master is fine now. He’ll probably wake up soon. Can I go now?”

Chloe thought to herself, What a joke. If I stick around until that dangerous guy wakes up and sees all the supplies I’ve gathered, he’s bound to get suspicious.

Good thing the leopard’s easier to trick.

The leopard narrowed its bloodred eyes in a threatening way, shot another look at its master, and shook its head.

The message was clear. If its master didn’t wake up, Chloe wasn’t going anywhere. With a stubborn and menacing glare, the leopard returned to the staircase, blocking her only way out.

Chloe’s heart sank.

Since she couldn’t leave, she just kept pretending to be exhausted, making sure the leopard thought she’d given it her all.

At the same time, she made sure to quickly stash away the cores. To her surprise, there were actually two icetype cores and one spiritpowered core among them.

I really hit the jackpot this time, she thought.

She put all the cores she didn’t need right now into the four corners of her spiritual space.

She shook the two bags hard, and a bunch of keys fell out, still stained with dried blood.

She didn’t think much of it and just tossed them aside.

Only then did Chloe switch on her highpowered flashlight, scanning the area to check out her surroundings.

She tested the waters by walking around the warehouse, but the leopard didn’t react at all. It just lay by the stairway, dozing.

off.

Chloe figured out that as long as she didn’t try to leave, she could do whatever she wanted inside the warehouse.

Logically, there must be another exit somewhere. That staircase was likely just for staff access. Otherwise, it was impossible for them to bring in all those truckloads of supplies.

Plus, with a huge leopard in here, there was no way it could’ve fit through that narrow stairway.

Finally, Chloe found the main door. It was locked from the inside out, probably by the unconscious man.

Her lips tightened into a straight line, wondering if the leopard would notice if she made a move for the door.

Dragging herself up, she limped toward the warehouse door, silver needle ready in her hand to pick the lock. She was almost at the door when the leopard suddenly caught on.

The leopard darted over, roaring at Chloe.

It shoved her with its head, forcing her back toward the man.

To be honest, it wanted to clamp its jaws around her, but then it remembered its master’s warning about its venomous teeth. If it accidentally killed Chloe, there would be no one left to save its master, so it had to be extra careful.

Chloe sat there looking defeated, her eyes flicking nervously around. She couldn’t let that dangerous man catch sight of her. Otherwise, there was no way she could ever explain why all the supplies in the warehouse had disappeared.

Hey, since I’m totally drained, mind if I absorb a few of these cores to recharge?Chloe said, trying to sound casual.

The leopard just stared at her silently.

Since she couldn’t leave anyway, Chloe just pulled out two mattresses, put the man on one, and covered him with the other. But the leopard wasn’t having it. It dragged the man right out of the bedding, lay down on the ground, and tucked him under its own belly.

Chloe was stunned.

She thought, What the hell is up with this leopard?

It’s only been a month since the apocalypse, and it’s so smart?‘

Chloe ignored the leopard and hurriedly took out a core, immediately starting to draw energy from it.

She needed to get her strength back soon. Otherwise, if the leopard decided to come at her, she’d be totally helpless.

By the time Chloe opened her eyes again, two hours had gone by. She still had no clue what was happening upstairs.

Emily hadn’t come down to check on her at all, which was strange.

As soon as Chloe got to her feet, the leopard snapped its eyes open and shot her a dangerous warning.

Okay, I get it. I’m not leaving,Chloe said quickly.

Chloe was anxiously pacing back and forth when she suddenly noticed a sturdy metal security door, the heavy, vaultlike kind used in banks.

Chloe thought to herself, There must be something valuable behind that door.

Too bad, even a small bomb probably won’t be enough to get this door open. Hold on.”

She glanced back and caught sight of those bloodstained keys lying on the ground.

With nothing to lose, she scooped up the keys and walked over to the big metal door.

There were four ways to unlock it: keypad, facial recognition, fingerprint scanner, and a plain old keyhole.

She tried every single key, and finally, after a dozen minutes, she heard a click and the door was open.

Chloe sucked in a sharp breath.

The stuff inside was enough to make anyone drool.

It was all raw emeralds.

Some had already been sliced up, with emerald bracelet sizes sketched right on them. There were big emeralds carved into all kinds of designs, and a bunch of pieces still in progress..

The room wasn’t big, maybe 100 square feet or so, but it was totally tucked away, packed with nothing but the finest emeralds around.

With a flick of her wrist, Chloe swept every last emerald into her spiritual space, not leaving a single one behind.

Next, she discovered a small cold storage room and packed all the frozen food inside straight into her spiritual space as well. After another hour of searching, convinced the warehouse was completely empty, she finally returned to the leopard’s side.

Chloe’s eyes flickered. She suddenly had an idea.

No matter how much animals mutated, they just couldn’t think like humans do.

Chloe guided the leopard, step by step. Its eyes were alert and a little lost, but she had it totally figured out.

The air here is awful. Your master needs some fresh air, or he might not wake up. Let me carry him over to the stairway right there. It’ll be better for his injuries,Chloe said, making exaggerated gestures to get her point across.

Chloe forced herself to look calm, even though her heart was racing.

She hefted the man up and started heading toward the stairway.

Damn. This guy is so heavy, Chloe thought, struggling with his weight.

Taking a few steps, she saw the dawn of freedom finally beckoning to her.

At last, she made it to the stairway and set the man down on the leopard’s belly. The leopard immediately snuggled him close, protectively wrapping him up and keeping him warm.

Chloe chuckled, Not bad, big guy. You’re pretty clever. With this freezing weather, if you weren’t keeping him tucked in like that, he’d be an icicle by now.”

But Chloe’s words suddenly died in her throat.

In the faint glow from the stairway, she caught a glimpse of his face.

Her heart skipped a beat, eyes going wide.

Recognition hit her like a truck. She knew exactly who this guy was.

In her previous life, he was the topranked lightningpowered human.

Back then, his skin was a lot darker, and a long scar slashed across his face, giving him a seriously menacing vibe.

Her own family had betrayed her, handing her over to a bunch of powered freaks who used her for their twisted fun. She’d nearly died, but this guy just happened to pass by and he casually killed those powered humans.
