Chapter 44Â
“What? You’re an ice–powered human?” Caden’s eyes narrowed.Â
He’d been planning to have his way with Chloe tonight, but now that he realized she was a powered human, he’d need a newÂ
strategy.Â
Chloe nodded coldly.Â
“Looks like we’ve got ourselves another teammate,” Caden said with a big grin.Â
He made it sound like Chloe was already part of their team.Â
“Hey, girl, do you want to join our squad?” Damir shot her a wink, tossing out an invitation.Â
Caden shoved his gun hard against his forehead. “Trying to steal my teammate from me? Are you looking to get yourself killed?”Â
Shawn, who’d been hanging back, suddenly came over grinning from ear to ear. “Chloe, you’re a powered human? That’sÂ
awesome.”Â
He glanced at the emerald bracelet on her wrist, and greed flashed in his eyes.Â
‘Sophie said that bracelet is a real treasure, and we have to snatch it. Looks like Chloe’s powers are tied to that thing for sure,‘ Shawn thought.Â
“Chloe, I’ve always loved you. I was just blinded by Sophie before. I’m really sorry,” Shawn said, trying to sound sincere.Â
Seeing Chloe about to lose her cool, Shawn hurried to say, “Please, don’t reject me, okay? Ever since you started acting different six months ago, I’ve felt so empty inside. It took me a while to realize it was you I loved all along…”Â
Before he could finish, Emily let out a loud gagging sound.Â
She pulled a disgusted face and fake–gagged twice. “Are you fucking kidding me? Do you really think someone like you deserves Chloe?”Â
Shawn didn’t even get mad. He’d already made up his mind. No matter where Chloe went, he was sticking to her like glue.Â
‘Chloe’s been chasing after me for so long, starting way back in high school, always acting like my loyal simp. There’s no way she just stopped liking me out of the blue,’ Shawn thought to himself.Â
“Oh yeah, isn’t this emerald bracelet your family treasure? Why don’t you give it to me? Let’s call it our love token,” Shawn said, putting on a lovesick face.Â
Chloe gave Shawn a look of utter disdain, and then casually slid the bracelet off her right wrist.Â
“You want this?” Chloe asked, her tone frosty.Â
Shawn’s eyes gleamed with pride, a flash of deep self–satisfaction within them.Â
‘See? She’s still into me, Shawn thought, feeling totally smug.Â
His hand trembled as he reached out, but Chloe let go without hesitation.Â
He looked down.Â
The once–sparkling emerald bracelet lay shattered into several pieces. Sophie screamed, dropping to her knees to frantically gather every fragment she could find.Â
Chapter 44Â
But no matter how hard she searched, one small piece was missing. She kept trying to reassemble it, panic etched across her face.Â
Chloe putÂ
on her most innocent look, even sounding a bit hurt. “Shawn, I was handing it to you. Why didn’t you What should I do now? That was my family heirloom.”Â
catch it?Â
Shawn’s face went dark. He knew Chloe had done it on purpose.Â
He composed himself and forced an awkward smile. “Sorry, Chloe. I’ll get it fixed for you, I promise.”Â
Then he snatched the broken pieces right from Sophie’s hands and stuffed them into his pocket.Â
“What are you doing? That’s mine,” Sophie shrieked.Â
She thought, ‘With the bracelet from my dream now broken, does that mean my powers are gone too? And my spiritual space is lost forever?‘Â
Feeling utterly hopeless, she went for Shawn’s face with her nails, but he just booted her aside.Â
Hundreds of survivors stood nearby, their faces pale and exhausted. No one had the energy or the will to react to the chaos unfolding in front of them.Â
Afternoon had finally crept in.Â
The powered humans from both groups began handing out rations.Â
Ordinary survivors each got one packet of pasta and a bottle of water. The powered humans received two packets of pasta, some biscuits, and a small piece of bread.Â
Chloe shared some of her own supplies with Emily, and they ate quietly together.Â
Emily’s power was rare, but since she kept it hidden, she was given only a bottle of water and a pack of pasta like everyoneÂ
else.Â
The water bottles were frozen solid. When someone grew desperate for a drink, they’d bite through the plastic, trying to suck on the ice inside.Â
Upstairs was a large department store, still stocked with food and snacks, but even that couldn’t last more than two weeks for over a hundred people.Â
From here on, supplies would only grow scarcer.Â
And the resentment among the ordinary survivors would only deepen.Â
“Why do we only get one pack of pasta a day, while you all get the good stuff?” a girl from the other squad called out. “That’sÂ
not fair.”Â
Chloe looked up, one eyebrow raised in surprise.Â
Lily actually made it to Hevenseale. What an idiot.Â
In a world overrun by disaster and zombies, while everyone else was fighting to escape, Lily was walking straight into theÂ
busiest crowds.Â
Chloe glanced to her side. Dustin Booth was right there.Â
Even though he was crouching, his tall, bulky frame was hard to miss. Their eyes met for a split second before Chloe quickly looked away.Â

Chapter 44Â
Damir caught sight of Lily, and just like that, all his anger melted away.Â
“Here, you can have mine,” he said, offering her his food.Â
Lily instantly perked up, cooing in a sugary voice, “Thanks.”Â
Before she could even taste the bread, Damir scooped her up like she weighed nothing and carried her straight into a nearby shop.Â
Soon, unsavory noises drifted from inside. Everyone knew exactly what was happening.Â
Chloe shot Dustin a surprised look. He was already watching her with a bitter smile.Â
Chloe thought, Well… this is awkward. Is he just… getting left behind?‘Â
She glanced around. Everyone else was minding their own business, heads down, slurping their pasta as if this were an everyday scene.Â
Just then, Caden walked over. “Hey, I’m Caden. What’s your name?”Â
“Chloe,” she replied coolly, keeping her distance. She didn’t even offer a handshake.Â
Her grip tightened around her machete. If Caden tried anything like what Damir did with Lily, she wouldn’t hesitate to cut his junk off.Â
Caden sat down beside her. “I’m with a powered human squad from the base, out here scavenging. Interested in joining us?”Â
Chloe’s eyes lit up at the mention of a base. “There’s a base nearby?”Â
“Yeah, a small one up north. We’re heading out tomorrow. Do you want to come?”Â
“We’ll see,” Chloe said, noncommittal. She didn’t outright reject him. There was no point in giving Caden a reason to cause trouble.Â
Chloe had zero intention of going with them. In her previous life, about six months into the apocalypse, Hevenseale was hit by earthquakes and tsunamis. The whole city vanished almost overnight, swallowed by the sea.Â
She needed to get out as soon as she could.Â
Tomorrow would mark one full month since the apocalypse. The sun wouldn’t rise at all, and only moonlight for a full twenty–four hours.Â
That was when many people would awaken their powers, and zombies would temporarily stop attacking as they began to evolve.Â
Chloe was determined to scavenge every last supply in the city before then and get out for good.Â
Just thinking about the resources still hidden in Hevenseale made her heart race.Â
Caden didn’t push. “In the apocalypse, no matter how strong you are, going alone means getting left behind. Better to stick together. It’s safer.”Â
“I’ll think about it,” Chloe replied vaguely.Â
Late that night, when everyone was deep asleep, two shadowy figures slipped toward the stairwell and crept up to theÂ
seventh floor.Â
