Chapter 50Â

So it was that fire–powered human, Mindy.Â
It turned out she was a powered human with both fire and wood abilities.Â
As soon as they stepped into the room, Caden quickly summoned a wall of earth, shutting all the mutantÂ
beasts out.Â
“Chloe, are you okay?” Emily asked, her face pale and swaying on her feet, barely able to stand.Â
Clearly, that moment when the mutant toad hesitated during its attack was thanks to Emily’s spirit–powered strike. It gave Chloe just enough time to make her escape.Â
With a pale face, Chloe forced herself upright. “Prepare to torch them.”Â
She pulled out the gasoline–filled water gun from her gear and handed it to Dustin, while Caden grabbed a match and stood at the ready.Â
Soon, a long strand of spider silk broke through the wall. Dustin was quick; he sprayed gasoline through the water gun, and Caden chucked the lit match right into the hole.Â
Whoosh.Â
It was like setting off an oil explosion; the entire twelfth floor instantly turned into a raging inferno.Â
Chloe waved her hand, and an ice wall formed instantly, sealing off the choking smoke.Â
Only then did she finally get a chance to roll up her pant leg and take a look at her injury.Â
“Oh my god, how did you get hurt so badly?” Tears welled up in Emily’s eyes.Â
Her legs had been eaten away by corrosion, and in the corners, you could even see bits of white bone.Â
Everyone sucked in a sharp breath.Â
Chloe reached out, letting green energy flow over her legs. The wounds scabbed up in no time, but her skin was left covered in rough, uneven scars.Â
As soon as she finished, she didn’t waste a second before she started drawing energy from the core.Â
She’d barely absorbed half the energy from the core when the gasoline outside burned away, and the mutant beasts came charging at them again.Â
Dustin and Caden kept using the same fire tactic, and each time they unleashed a fire attack, it bought them a short break to catch their breath.Â
No matter how hard they fought, they were only human. In the end, a tidal wave of mutant beasts smashed through the door and poured into the room.Â

“Ah.” The room erupted in terrified screams and shouts.Â

Chloe shrank into the corner, her eyes fixed in a fierce glare at the Spider King and Rat King, who were so close.Â
Chloe whispered to herself, trying to steady her nerves, “Ten, nine, eight.”Â
The Spider King lunged first, its eyes burning red with rage. All its spider minions had been torched, and now it wanted Chloe dead.Â
The mutant rat stared her down with its tiny eyes, flashing its sharp white teeth, itching to rip this damn human to pieces.Â
Chloe kept dodging, but soon she was backed into a corner with nowhere left to go. She got tangled up in the web, completely stuck and unable to move.Â
She watched in horror as the Spider King crawled over the web toward her, ready to take its sweet time enjoying its meal.Â
“Three, two, one,” As Chloe whispered, the crescent moon outside became a full moon, casting a soft blue halo over the world.Â
The month was up.Â
Every mutant beast and zombie passed out cold, and a full day and night of evolution kicked off.Â
Even humans, under the moon’s gentle glow, began to awaken their powers.Â
But after the blizzard, Hevenseale had become a dead city; almost no living soul remained.Â
Now, everyone around them, except for Chloe and Emily, had fallen unconscious.Â
Those who’d never had powers before were awakening for the first time, while the powered humans were leveling up.Â
Anyone who slipped into unconsciousness was actually lucky; it was their ticket to surviving the apocalypse.Â
Emily’s face was very pale as she poured all her spirit–powered strength into stopping the Spider King from getting any closer.Â
“Emily, hurry, pull me down,” Chloe called out, her voice urgent.Â
Chloe was left hanging in the air, a vine suddenly appearing in her hand. Emily gripped the other end tight and hauled with everything she had, dragging Chloe down.Â
After a massive struggle, the two of them finally lay sprawled on the ground, panting for air.Â
Emily gave a weird look at the mutant beasts and their teammates. “What’s up with them?”Â
“Emily, today’s exactly one month since the apocalypse hit. It’s a big deal for everyone; this is when people start getting their powers for the first time,” Chloe explained.Â

She turned to look at the eerie blue moonlight shining through the window.Â

“For a whole day and night, the blue moonlight will bathe the world. Every zombie and mutant beast will be knocked out cold. It’s the one day we can actually breathe easy since the apocalypse started,” Chloe said.Â
Chloe glanced at where Emily was standing; she was just outside the moonlight’s reach. No wonder she didn’t black out like everyone else.Â
But as soon as the two of them stepped into the moonlight, they both instantly lost consciousness.Â
Chloe had been storing up her power for a long time; she just needed that one moment to break through.Â
The moonlight gave her exactly the chance she needed. As soon as she came to, Chloe was instantly wary, scanning the room; everyone else was still unconscious.Â
The powered humans were just shivering from the cold, but most of the ordinary humans had been frozen solid, turned into ice sculptures.Â
To Chloe’s surprise, Sophie was still alive.Â
Chloe’s eyes flashed with surprise, but she didn’t finish Sophie off. Death would’ve been a mercy; only by letting her struggle through the apocalypse could she truly pay for what she’d done.Â
Chloe realized she was now undeniably a third–level powered human.Â
Her ice powers, wind powers, and even her healing abilities had all hit level three now; even the hardest one to upgrade made it through.Â
She glanced at her watch; it was five in the morning.Â
Now was the perfect window for her to hoard as many supplies as she could.Â
She took the chance to slip into her spiritual space and was shocked to see how much bigger it had gotten.Â
The mall up north had expanded 30 feet to the east, and the open area, which used to be about the size of a basketball court, had now tripled.Â
She looked up at the sky; her daily time inside the spiritual space was now up to fifteen minutes.Â
Even so, it looked like her spiritual space still hadn’t hit level one.Â
She slipped out of her spiritual space, a huge ice blade appearing in her hand. Without hesitation, she hacked out the cores from the heads of the Spider King and the mutant Rat King, both level three.Â
Then she stuffed their corpses into her spiritual space. These things were packed with useful stuff, and once she got to the base, they’d definitely come in handy.Â
With Emily slung over her back, Chloe headed out. The blaze had wiped out all the mutant beasts, but their cores were still perfectly intact.Â
Beneath the ashes, level one mutant beast cores were scattered everywhere.Â

Jackpot, Chloe thought to herself.Â
With a quick wave of her hand, Chloe scooped up every last core and stashed them in her spiritual space. Then, still carrying Emily, she dashed down the stairs.Â
Chloe was racing against time now.Â
She had only nineteen hours to grab all the supplies she could find in Hevenseale, and then get out before time ran out.Â
With her wind power, Chloe was a blur. She blew past from the twelfth floor all the way down to the first in just ten seconds.Â
She didn’t even bother to look down as she walked right over the unconscious mutant beasts, barely noticing them at all.Â
When Chloe pushed open the doors to the department store, the insane swarm of zombies and mutant beasts outside was so overwhelming that it almost made her eyes pop out of her head.Â
Zombies were stretching endlessly in every direction, and mutant beasts, mostly giant insects, swarming like a tidal wave, flooding the streets as far as the horizon.Â
Chloe swallowed hard, pulled the Armored Hummer out of her spiritual space, and shoved Emily inside.Â
She took a quick look at the map, then headed straight for the nearest supermarket.Â
The Armored Hummer’s engine roared as it plowed through the zombies, crushing them under its massiveÂ
wheels.Â
But the streets were jam–packed with wrecked cars, all smashed up and useless.Â
In the end, Chloe had no choice but to stash Emily in a tall building up north, right next to the StonegateÂ
Base.Â
Then she rushed back to the heart of the city and started clearing out everything from the big supermarkets and department stores, stashing it all in her spiritual space.Â
From what Chloe knew, no powered human could enter the downtown area again until the sky was shrouded.Â
