Chapter 52 

Emily was excitedly rambling on. 

 

“The old couple at the convenience store turned into zombies. I grabbed a bunch of sacks and stuffed everything I could find into them. I almost killed myself hauling it all back,” she said. 

She thought she’d get some praise, but when she turned around, she saw Chloe looking miserable, her eyes fixed on the table. 

“Ah, hurry up and eat something. Oh, and the power’s still on here. That’s great,” Emily said. 

Emily kept chattering away, while Chloe just focused on her food. She polished off three small plates of pasta and half the veggies. 

Only then did she pat her belly and sink comfortably into the couch. 

“Mmm, that really hit the spot,” Chloe said. 

She thought having Emily as a teammate was awesome; the best part was, Emily could actually cook. 

Back before the apocalypse, Chloe was a pampered princess who never lifted a finger in the kitchen. Her family always had a maid to cook for them. 

In her previous life, things were so scarce that there was no way she could’ve learned to cook. 

Even now, the most she could do was steam some pasta and boil a few veggies. 

“Emily, having you around is the best,” Chloe said. 

Emily chided her like a mom, “Chloe, you ate way too much. Get up and walk around a bit, or you’ll end up with a stomachache.” 

“Okay,” Chloe mumbled. 

She barely responded before sinking right back into a deep sleep on the couch. 

After days spent on edge, she could finally rest easy for once. 

At one in the afternoon, when Chloe woke up, she spotted an uninvited guest hanging around. 

Emily looked uncomfortable. “Chloe, she’s my classmate. Her family lives downstairs, and she kept insisting on coming in.” 

Chloe just shrugged and didn’t say much, but the other girl immediately got upset. 

“What do you mean? I kept insisting? This isn’t even your place. If you can come in, why can’t I?” Vivian White retorted. 

Emily was caught off guard by how fast she changed her tune; she definitely wasn’t talking like that when she was begging to get in earlier. 

“Vivian, why are you talking like that?” Emily asked. 

Vivian shot her a glare. “What do you want me to say? That you, a broke nobody, could actually afford a place like this?” 

Chloe just raised an eyebrow and kept quiet. 

Honestly, maybe it was for the best. It would let Emily see for herself how things really worked in the apocalypse. Random acts of kindness wouldn’t get one anywhere now.

Chapter 52 

EX 55 vouchers 

Vivian’s eyes hungrily scanned the kitchen. She’d followed the smell all the way up here, hoping to beg for some food, but never thought Emily would be the one living here. 

She marched straight to the table, spotted half a pot of ribs left, and her mouth instantly started watering. 

Without even bothering to wash her hands, she just grabbed a rib and shoved it right into her mouth. 

The ribs had been cooked that morning, and the broth had already turned to jelly, but Vivian didn’t care. She just tore into them like she hadn’t seen food in ages. 

“Emily, this stuff was left by the previous owner, wasn’t it?” Vivian said with a sneer. 

Emily stomped her foot, fuming. “No way. These are mine. I busted my ass to get these supplies.” 

Vivian shot her a glare. “Please, who are you trying to fool? With that scrawny body of yours, you wouldn’t even get stuck in a zombie’s teeth.” 

Her eyes darted everywhere as she grabbed a bunch of trash bags hanging on the wall, then started shoveling all the food from the table right into them. 

‘Is she seriously just going to pack everything up and walk out with it?‘ she wondered. Chloe was floored. ‘I’ve seen shameless people before, but this is a whole new level. 

Just then, there was a knock at the door. 

A woman’s voice shouted from the hallway, “Vivian, are you in there? Why aren’t you out yet?” 

It was Vivian’s mom. 

She was the one who sent Vivian over to ask for food. 

In this brutal apocalypse, she believed only big, tough men could get their hands on food, and every guy out there had his own twisted needs. 

Her real intention was to push Vivian to go offer herself up, trading whatever it took to survive. 

After yelling for ages with no response, she started cursing, “Damn girl, open the door. Don’t just think about having fun yourself. Remember, the whole family’s survival is on the line.” 

Vivian didn’t bother waiting for Emily’s permission; she just went ahead and opened the door herself. 

A middle–aged woman stormed in, with a middle–aged man and a teenage boy trailing behind her. 

“Dad, Mom, Owen, you’re here. Come on in,” Vivian said, acting like she owned the place as she ushered them inside. 

The woman scanned the room, spotted that Emily was just a skinny girl, and her eyes gleamed with greed. 

Chloe just stayed curled up on the couch, pretending to be asleep. 

“Wow, I thought some big guy was cooking in here, but turns out it’s just a dainty little girl,” the woman said, smirking. 

Vivian dug out the leftovers she’d just scarfed down. 

“Mom, Dad, Owen, there’s food here,” she announced, waving them over. 

As soon as they heard, the three of them rushed into the kitchen and started grabbing handfuls of food, stulling it into their mouths like they hadn’t seen food in centuries. 

Emily couldn’t take it anymore. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

Chapter 32 

The woman just waved her off like Emily was nothing, not taking her seriously at all. 

Hey, little girl, aren’t you scared living here all by yourself?” she mocked, 

Vivian tugged at her mom’s sleeve and rolled her eyes. “Mom, this isn’t even her place. They’re just squatting here in someone else’s apartment” 

The man and woman exchanged glances, 

“Well, so this isn’t even your place? That works out for us. Why would a young girl like you choose to be a thief, huh? the woman mocked. 

As she talked, her eyes scanned the room. Spotting the water dispenser in the corner, she smacked her lips, grabbed a cup, and chugged it down. 

Then she made a beeline for the bedroom. 

Emily stepped in front of her, blocking the way. “That’s where I sleep. You’re not allowed in? 

She wasn’t dumb; if this bunch saw all the supplies stashed in the spare room, they’d definitely try to snatch everything for 

themselves. 

The woman, big and burly, shoved Emily aside, making her stagger. “This isn’t even your place. Careful, or I’ll report you and get you thrown out,” 

Then she waddled off toward the bedroom. 

Emily struggled to get up, rage burning in her eyes, but the middle–aged man grabbed her in a vice grip, pinning her down. 

She glared at Vivian, voice trembling with anger. “Vivian, what’s that supposed to mean? Weren’t we besties?” 

Back then, Emily was painfully insecure; all she ever did was study like crazy, and nobody wanted to hang out with her. 

Vivian was the only one who didn’t care that she was broke. She was Emily’s only friend in college, her one true bestie. 

Vivian burst out laughing as Emily had just told the world’s biggest joke. “Emily, have you ever taken a good look in the mirror? 

“You really think someone like me, the queen bee, would ever want to be friends with you?” 

She flicked a stray hair behind her ear with a dainty finger. “Why did you always end up with water dumped on your head in the restroom? 

“Why did guys always corner you in the alley? Why did everyone at school freeze you out?” 

She lifted her chin with a smirk. “Ever stop to think about any of that?” 

Emily’s eyes burned with fury and heartbreak. “It was you? You did all of this to me?” 

“Oh, please, you know now?” Vivian just shrugged, not bothering to answer. 

“Why? We barely even knew each other before. Why did you have to do this to me?” Emily was totally lost.
