Chapter 54Â
Then, a plump figure barreled over.Â
The middle–aged woman, clutching a blood–dripping stone, had a vicious look on her face as she was about to bring it crashing down on Chloe’s head.Â
But she missed Chloe, lunged forward, and lost her balance, the stone slipped from her hand and landed right on her ownÂ
toe.Â
She wailed, “Ouch, it hurts so much. Honey, help me.”Â
Chloe summoned a razor–sharp ice blade in her hand as the middle–aged woman went full meltdown, flailing on the ground and shrieking like a banshee.Â
The ice blade flashed, and her shrieks turned into pitiful whimpers.Â
A severed chunk of tongue hit the floor.Â
The middle–aged woman froze in shock for a moment, then suddenly snapped and lunged at Chloe like a madwoman, her eyes burning with fury.Â
With another slash of her ice blade, Chloe sliced the woman’s right arm clean off, and blood gushed out in a gruesomeÂ
spray.Â
“Ah.” The man rushed in, clutching his wound, and when he saw the scene, his eyes instantly turned murderous.Â
He lunged to grab Chloe’s hair, but in one swift motion, her ice blade sliced both his hands clean off. Then, with a brutal punch, she knocked him out cold.Â
Vivian was shaking all over, stumbling backward in fear.Â
“Owen, help me,” she pleaded, her voice trembling with terror.Â
But her good–for–nothing little brother was already long gone, having run for his life.Â
“Chloe, please, don’t kill me. I swear I didn’t mean it. My parents forced me,” Vivian stammered, her whole body shaking with terror, desperate to survive.Â
Chloe suddenly smiled, her red lips parting to reveal two rows of cold, deadly white teeth.Â
“Of course, I won’t kill you. Once you’re dead, it’s lights out, nothing left. You haven’t even had a taste of the apocalypse yet. How could I let you die before you get to enjoy all the fun?” Chloe said.Â
With that, she sliced off Vivian’s right arm just like she did to the others, then threw them all out.Â
With temperatures plunging below -22°F, those wounds would never heal, and the heavy stench of blood would draw predators like moths to a flame.Â
Their fate was already sealed.Â
Just killing them outright was boring.Â
The real nightmare was the terror of waiting for death while starving and freezing in the cold.Â
Chloe wrinkled her nose at the overwhelming stench of blood in the room. There was no way she could stay here any longer.Â

Chapter 54Â
She swept everything in the house into her spiritual space, then wiped the blood written mark off Emily’s foreheadÂ
Only then did she carry Emily upstairs.Â
When she opened the door, the whole family had already cleared out, leaving blood stains splattered all over the floorÂ
From the two rooms next door, she could hear zombies howling and banging furiously against the doors.Â
It looked like both families next door had already turned into zombies.Â
The zombies locked up inside hadn’t tasted human flesh, so they were so weak they weren’t even on par with the lowest- level zombies.Â
Chloe cradled Emily in her arms, and with a few casual kicks, she finished off the zombies without breaking a sweat.Â
She swept through both rooms, gathering up sheets, blankets, sofas, and all kinds of clothes, stashing everything away in her spiritual space.Â
As she climbed up, Chloe kept scooping up supplies, only checking out apartments where she could hear zombies making a racket inside.Â
When she finally made it to the 22nd floor, she chose the second apartment, busted the fingerprint lock, and carried Emily inside in her arms.Â
A weak female zombie, decked out in fancy pajamas, came charging at Chloe.Â
Chloe just kicked her once, sending the zombie smashing into the wall; she was shattered to bits, her head popping off and rolling across the floor.Â
After making sure the coast was clear, Chloe started checking out the room.Â
The place was lavishly decorated, with photos of a woman smiling sweetly hanging on the walls, most likely the zombie. Chloe had just taken out.Â
She laid Emily down on the bed, then wandered over to the doorway, standing there a bit stunned as she stared at the busted door.Â
The doors to the apartments on either side swung open, and the people inside peered out from behind their reinforced doors, their faces full of shock and uncertainty as they stared at Chloe.Â
A bearded man was staring at Chloe, totally stunned.Â
“Hey, pretty lady, looks like we meet again,” he called out.Â
Chloe turned around and saw someone she vaguely remembered; it was the same guy she’d run into at the downtown apartment complex.Â
The bearded guy craned his neck, scanning both ways with caution before shoving open his security door and strolling over.Â
“Don’t bother trying to fix it. Unless you’ve got a real expert, these doors are a nightmare to repair,” he said.Â
Chloe paused, her eyes suddenly going cold as she turned to look at him. “You’ve got the wrong person,” she replied.Â
The bearded guy looked like real trouble, tall, covered in tattoos, with a rough, gravelly voice. He was the kind of guy one would expect to see running with a gang.Â
Chloe wanted nothing to do with someone like him.Â
The bearded guy, Frank Hunter, let out a booming laugh. “Hey, pretty lady, don’t go underestimating me. I might not beÂ

good at much, but when it comes to reading people, I never miss.”Â
Chloe ignored him and walked straight into the room.Â

“Hey, I’m a strength–type powered human. Maybe we could-” the bearded guy started, but before he could finish with a bang, the door slammed right in his face, leaving him out in the cold.Â
He rubbed his nose, still aching from the hit, and couldn’t help but chuckle. “Damn, you’re one tough little chick.”Â
Then he just shrugged and wandered off to the room on the left.Â
From the peephole of the first apartment on the right, someone’s eye was glued there, never leaving for a second.Â
“Honey, what’s happening out there?” a woman called out, her voice shaky with worry.Â
The scrawny guy quickly blocked the peephole with his hand, his face turning very pale, eyes darting with panic and uncertainty.Â
“Honey, how much food do we have left?” he asked, his voice tight with worry.Â
“Just a box of sandwiches, a box of milk, and a few cookies,” the woman blurted out.Â
“Yeah, we should stay inside and not risk going out for food right now,” the man said, pacing back and forth, his eyes darting nervously.Â
The woman’s face went pale as she grabbed his shirt, her voice trembling with anxiety. “What’s going on?”Â
The man took a long moment to catch his breath. “Two girls just moved in next door. One’s out cold, and the other? She’s got crazy strength, kicked the security door right off its hinges.”Â
When the woman heard it was just a couple of girls, she gave a dismissive look and scoffed, “Honey, come on, they’re just some girls, and one of them is unconscious. Seriously, what’s so scary about that?”Â
The man dropped onto the couch, then sprang to his feet, his voice resolute.Â
She said, “It’s been a month since the apocalypse hit. Anyone still kicking isn’t some weakling. A scrawny girl dragging around an unconscious friend? That’s already suspicious. And besides-”Â
“And what?” the woman pressed, her voice tight with anxiety.Â
A flicker of fear crossed the man’s gaunt, pale face. “That scary guy from Apartment 3? He knows that girl, and he’s being super polite to her, almost like he’s actually scared of her.”Â
As he said this, the man swallowed hard, his throat dry with fear.Â
“What?” the woman blurted out. She staggered back a few steps, her knees practically knocking together.Â
The guy in Apartment 3 was new here, and the moment he moved in, he went on a killing spree.Â
Everyone in the hallway was scared out of their minds; just mentioning him was enough to make people freak out.Â
“Honey, are you sure you saw that right? That guy’s basically the Reaper. How could he possibly be scared of some little girl?”Â
the woman blurted out.Â
That made the scrawny guy waver for a second, but he was sure about one thing. They definitely knew each other.Â
“Forget it for now. When we head out, let’s just be extra careful. Let’s not get jumped out there,” the man said.Â
“Yeah, got it,” the woman replied.Â

As soon as Chloe stepped into the room, she jammed the couch up against the door and set an alarm right next to it.Â
The door wasn’t much of a barrier, and if anything made a sound, she’d be on it in a heartbeat.Â
