Chapter 58Â
“Wait for me,” Frank said.Â
Chloe and Emily headed downstairs, throwing on their black, zombie–blood–stained coats as they went.Â
Chloe’s hair was pinned up and hidden under a thick hat, her face masked in black so that only her eyes showed.Â
Emily followed suit, tossing on her own zombie–blood–stained jacket, and quickly caught up with Chloe.Â
The further they went down, there were barely any traces of people left.Â
“Hey, girls, it’s crawling with zombies out there. Don’t go outside,” a voice called out from behind a security door.Â
Someone behind the security door saw them and couldn’t help but call out a warning.Â
But Chloe and Emily didn’t even look back, just kept going downstairs like they hadn’t heard anything.Â
Once their figures disappeared, the person behind the door just clicked their tongue and muttered, “Stubborn.”Â
Every now and then, a couple of zombies would lurch out from the stairwell, but Chloe dispatched them with a single swing of her blade.Â
The lower they went, the thicker the horde became; no trace of people anywhere.Â
By the time they hit the seventh floor, Emily’s face turned very pale.Â
“Chloe, it’s nothing but zombies down there. What do we do now?” Emily asked, her voice trembling.Â
Chloe frowned slightly and asked, “Since we first arrived, has the number of zombies changed?”Â
Emily thought for a moment and replied, “When I last hauled supplies back, there were just about two–thirds of what we’re seeing now.”Â
As she said this, her eyes widened in horror, and she couldn’t help but suck in a sharp breath.Â
“So the zombie numbers really are going up? Actually, it’s not just the numbers. They’re getting tougher. There are already a bunch of second–level zombies out there,” Emily stammered.Â
Chloe said in a low, urgent voice, “This city’s probably been abandoned. We need to get out of here, now.”Â
‘If we don’t leave now, it’ll be too late,‘ Chloe thought anxiously.Â
Just then, a second–level zombie crawled up from below, its grayish arms reaching out as it lunged at them.Â
Just then, a figure darted out from behind them. Chloe grabbed Emily and quickly pulled her aside.Â
It was Frank, wielding a fire axe. With a single swing, he chopped the second–level zombie’s head clean off.Â
He didn’t stop; he tore through several more zombies, each strike fast, precise, and brutal. No doubt about it, he was a total badass.Â
He glanced back at them with a grin. “Boss, I’ll clear the way.”Â
As he spoke, he showed no mercy, hacking down every zombie that dared come close, leaving nothing but corpses in the path of his fire axe.Â
He wielded the axe like a whirlwind, each swing slicing through the air with deadly speed.Â

Emily gaped, her mouth hanging open. “Chloe, is he really just going to force his way to join us?”Â

Chloe watched Frank coldly as he single–handedly cut down the zombies. In the narrow stairwell, as long as he stood there, not a single zombie could get past him.Â
One man holding the line, and nothing could get past him.Â
Chloe crossed her arms and said calmly, “Spit it out.”Â
Emily was caught off guard. ‘Say what?‘ she wondered.Â
Frank burst out laughing, taking another zombie’s head clean off with his axe. “Sharp as always.”Â
As the zombies kept swarming in, Frank was starting to get out of breath, sweat breaking out across his forehead.Â
“My wife’s in Riverside. She’s eight months pregnant,” Frank said, desperation creeping into his voice.Â
“No,” Chloe interrupted him flatly, not letting him get another word in.Â
She didn’t even need to hear the rest; she could already guess what he was about to ask.Â
Riverside was right next to Hevenseale, and if they wanted to get out, they’d have to go through it first.Â
But a woman who was eight months pregnant was way too much trouble.Â
And with Riverside being so massive, how could they possibly hope to find her?Â
Frank looked pretty bummed out, worry and disappointment written all over his face.Â
“Boss, just help me get my wife out of there, and my life’s yours, no questions asked,” he pleaded.Â
“Oh? Can your life get us food or water?” Chloe snorted, her voice cold.Â
Frank looked even more deflated. “Hey, I’m tough, you know.”Â
Emily couldn’t help but interrupt, “If you’re so tough, why not go save your wife yourself? Why risk our lives with you?”Â
Frank’s eyes flashed, and he gritted his teeth. “Because she’s a third–level powered human.”Â
Chloe’s mind went off like a bomb, her whole body bristling with killing intent.Â
‘Even Emily only just found out I was a third–level powered human. How did this guy know?‘ Chloe thought, suspicion flaring.Â
When he felt Chloe’s killing intent, Frank’s shoulders slumped, looking totally defeated. “I swear, I’m not here to cause trouble.Â
“Just let me come with you guys, okay? Whatever dirty work you need done, fighting, killing, and looting. I’m your guy. I just want to survive and get home.”Â
He paused, eyes brimming with tears. “Even if my wife is gone, Iwant to go down with her.”Â
He glanced at the endless stream of zombies. “On my own, I probably won’t make it to Riverside alive.”Â
Chloe cocked her head at Frank, thinking, ‘Is there really a man out there this devoted?”Â
But Emily was totally moved, her eyes brimming with tears as she tugged at Chloe’s hand.Â
“Chloe, m–maybe we should just let him tag along?” Emily whispered.Â

Chloe’s eyes flickered, and she replied coldly. “Whatever.”Â
Frank shot Emily a grateful look, then started hacking at the zombies with even more ferocity.Â

Chloe added, “The road’s wide enough for us to go our own way. If you want to tag along, I won’t stop you. But let me make this clear. If you try anything funny, don’t blame me for what happens next.”Â
It was just a temporary alliance, so Chloe wasn’t about to nitpick.Â
Besides, they were already heading through Riverside anyway; she had a whole warehouse of supplies stashed there before the apocalypse, though she had no idea if any of it was still around.Â
“Of course,” Frank replied quickly.Â
So Chloe and Frank fought side by side, quickly carving a bloody path through the horde.Â
Emily’s powers weren’t much, so she took on the support role herself, grabbing zombie cores nonstop.Â
She followed close behind, dagger flashing in her hand, prying the core out of every zombie’s forehead as soon as its head hit the ground.Â
Her backpack was stuffed full in no time.Â
Staring at the mountains of corpses and rivers of blood, Emily didn’t feel the old fear anymore; instead, she was actually thrilled.Â
Maybe it was because all the zombies and mutant beasts had leveled up, but as soon as Chloe and Frank hit the streets, they were completely exhausted.Â
An endless stream of zombies kept attacking, and once they caught the scent of humans, they went totally berserk.Â
Chloe couldn’t just magically pull out her Armored Hummer in front of Frank, so she was forced to tough it out and keep fighting.Â
Every street and alley was empty of living people, just endless waves of zombies and mutant beasts, pouring in from every direction.Â
Frank, who was only a second–level powered human, looked pale as a ghost. “This isn’t working. We need to find a car, or we’ll be worn out and killed here.”Â
Chloe rolled her eyes. ‘Like I needed you to point that out,‘ she wondered. ‘Honestly, if you weren’t here, I’d have busted out my Armored Hummer and been long gone.‘Â
Just when the three of them were about to get swamped, the roar of engines suddenly blasted through the street. A bunch of army–green pickups came barreling their way.Â
Gunshots echoed nonstop.Â
Most of the zombies got lured away by the gunfire, finally letting the three catch a break.Â
Soon, the zombies were mowed down by a barrage of bullets. Soldiers piled out of the military pickup trucks, some of them carrying sniper rifles.Â
Some started gathering zombie cores, while others began yelling through megaphones at the nearby buildings.Â
