Chapter 64Â

In this apocalypse, where people would even eat their own children, and blood ran in rivers, food mattered more than human life itself.Â
There were only two packs of pasta. One was kept for himself, and the other was handed to the tall, muscularÂ
guyÂ
covered inÂ
tattoos.Â
The key thing was, the other sniper just licked his lips and didn’t say a word.Â
That alone showed just how strong Frank was.Â
And yet, Frank had actually handed over all the food, something more precious than life itself, to that brat Chloe.Â
Sam’s mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, his eyes filled with greed. To him, Frank was his last lifeline, and he had to cling to it with everything he had.Â
He wouldn’t let go of Frank’s hand, his eyes fixed on him with a greedy, desperate look.Â
Frank was completely stunned, lines of exasperation crossing his face. Then, a wave of hostility and killing intent burst out from him as he lashed out with a kick to Sam’s chest.Â
“You fucking dare take advantage of me?” Frank snarled.Â
Sam and Frank looked about the same age, and for Sam to call him his son–in–law right off the bat was a straight–up challenge.Â
He’d been a street thug before the apocalypse, and after everything he’d done since, when he got pissed, he looked even more like a demon from hell.Â
Even the guy with the sniper rifle backed off, not wanting any trouble.Â
They’d seen Frank’s powers with their own eyes, and he was the one Gary Quinn, their boss, had his eye on. Sure, they weren’t afraid of him, but seriously, nobody wanted to cross a powerhouse like that.Â
Sam got booted straight to the ground, landing right next to Chloe and crashing into Kiera. The old lady, already weak and shaky, got knocked so hard she saw stars.Â
Still, her skinny, trembling hand clung stubbornly to Chloe’s backpack, veins bulging as she refused to let go of anything.Â
Niko glared at Chloe, shoving his finger right in her face and cussing her out.Â
He said, “You filthy little nobody. Hand over that backpack, now. I’m starving; I want those pasta, and the ones you got earlier, too.”Â
Niko’s brazen attitude left Emily completely stunned, and even Frank up front could tell something weird was going on.Â
He turned around, eyeing the reckless little brat with curiosity, thinking, ‘Where did this dumbass come from? Must be tired of living, huh?”Â
Chloe gave Niko an icy glance. The way he talked was just like his grandma, vicious and unreasonable.Â
But she wasn’t about to let him off just because he was a kid.Â
Chloe shot him a cold look and scoffed, “Who let this little punk in here? No manners at all.”Â
With that, she pulled out the pack of pasta, ripped it open right in front of Niko, and took a slow, deliberate bite. Her eyes narrowed as she exaggerated her enjoyment, making sure he saw every second of it.Â

“Wow, these pasta are amazing. So crispy, so tasty, seriously, this is heaven on earth, Chloe said, taking another big bite and crunching loudly, letting the delicious smell waft right under Niko’s nose.Â
Niko stomped his feet in frustration, gulping down his saliva before snatching up a rock and hurling it at Chloe.Â
“You little bastard born of a worthless woman. Go to hell,” he shouted.Â
The jagged rock shot straight for Chloe’s forehead. If it landed, she’d be bleeding from the head for sure.Â
Everyone in the car was stunned. They never expected this kid to be so vicious.Â
What a shame. Such a pretty girl; her beautiful face is about to be ruined, someone thought.Â
At the very last second, when the rock was just an inch from her forehead, it suddenly stopped dead in midair, hovering right in front of Chloe as if some invisible force had locked it in place.Â
“You’re a monster. You’re a monster,” screamed the woman Chloe had snatched the pasta from. Her outburst made everyone shudder, and they all stared at Chloe in horror.Â
The rock hovered in front of Chloe’s forehead for a couple of seconds, then, under Emily’s spirit–powered command. whipped back twice as fast. It smacked Niko right in the forehead with a loud thud, blood streaming down his face.Â
Emily planted her hands on her hips and snapped, “Where did this little punk come from? Doesn’t he have any adults to keep him in check? If not, guess I’ll have to deliver some justice myself.”Â
Kiera might have felt bad for her grandson, but supplies mattered more. Seizing a moment when Chloe was distracted, she yanked the backpack with all her strength. Yet it seemed glued to Chloe’s grip, refusing to budge no matter how hard she pulled.Â
She landed hard on her backside, still on top of Sam, who hadn’t even managed to get up yet. Sam rolled his eyes, almost knocked out by the whole mess.Â
After finally shoving Sam aside, she burst into loud, dramatic sobs.Â
“Why is my life so miserable? Lost my parents as a kid, my husband died right after we got married, and now, in my old age. I’m even getting roughed up by my own granddaughter,” Kiera said.Â
Watching the old woman bawl, wail, and roll around on the ground, Chloe felt nothing but irritation. She shot her a frosty, merciless look; her gaze as cold as ice water, and just one glance was enough to make anyone shiver.Â
“Maybe you’re cursed, and everyone around you ends up dead because of you,” Chloe said, her voice thick with barely suppressed resentment.Â
In her previous life, Chloe had been passed around by several powered humans, all because of this vicious old woman’s scheme, just for a half–eaten piece of bread.Â
Just thinking about it made Chloe clench her fists so tight her nails dug into her flesh, blood dripping down.Â
In her previous life, Kiera had called her every cruel name. After Chloe was handed over to be abused by powered humans, Kiera gave her the most disgusting nicknames, eating the food Chloe had traded her body for, and spitting at her in contempt.Â
That was exactly why Chloe had clung to even the smallest scrap of warmth Shawn ever gave her, only to end up with nothing, not even a body left behind.Â
This time, Chloe would be the queen of her own life.Â
Sam staggered to his feet, his eyes dark and heartbroken as he looked at Chloe, like she was a defiant, ungrateful kid.Â

“Come on, Chloe, that’s your grandma. You really crossed the line today,” Sam said, sounding deeply disappointed.Â
When Sam called her daughter, Emily and Frank both stared in disbelief. Frank was so shocked he actually tumbled right off his seat, almost wetting himself from sheer terror.Â
Frank thought, his brain short–circuiting, ‘Holy crap. What the hell did I just do?Â
‘Did I just kick Chloe’s dad? Damn, is this it for me? Is Chloe gonna have me wiped out?‘Â
“Daughter?” Emily shouted, her eyes flicking wildly between Sam and Chloe, totally stunned.Â
Suddenly, she slapped a hand over her mouth, her face frozen in shock.Â
Chloe yanked the backpack back with ease, a cold smirk curling on her lips as she shot Sam an icy glare.Â
“You say I’m your daughter? Then tell me, when’s my birthday? How old am I this year?” Chloe asked, her tone dripping with sarcasm and ice.Â
Sam was stunned, mouth agape, completely at a loss. Not a single answer came to mind.Â
“Ha, there really are all kinds of freaks in this world. You say she’s your daughter, but you can’t even remember her birthday or how old she is? That’s just ridiculous,” someone snickered from the backseat.Â
A woman sitting behind, her eyes glinting with jealousy, chimed in to pile on.Â
“Wow, you’re a real piece of work. It’s one thing to drool over someone else’s food, but now you’re trying to claim she’s your daughter? That’s so lame,” she said.Â
No one actually cared what the real story was between Sam and Chloe; they were just here for the show.Â
Sam’s face turned beet red with anger, his neck thickening as he fumed.Â
He whipped around and shot them a fierce glare. He said, “What do you know? She’s my daughter, plain and simple.”Â
Rosalie saw what was happening and rushed over, bawling her heart out as her whole world had just collapsed.Â
