“Chloe, we finally found you. Ever since the zombie virus broke out, we’ve had no idea where you were. Do you have any idea how worried I’ve been?” Rosalie said, her voice full of concern.Â
As she spoke, Rosalie anxiously looked Chloe up and down. She noticed that, aside from looking a little rough around the edges, Chloe wasn’t hurt at all. In fact, she looked healthy and energetic, her cheeks glowing.Â
But beneath those bright eyes, Rosalie’s jealousy was barely concealed.Â
‘Hmph, what’s so special about her anyway?‘ Rosalie thought, ‘She just hooked up with some old guy and slept her way to the top.‘Â
Rosalie reached out to touch Chloe’s hand, but Chloe immediately pulled away. Rosalie didn’t even flinch; she kept up her worried act without missing a beat.Â
“Chloe, Dad, and Grandma have been so worried that they could barely eat I’m just glad you’re safe, really, that’s all that matters,” Rosalie said, her voice trembling with emotion.Â
With that, she collapsed to the ground, burying her face in her hands and sobbing uncontrollably.Â
Sam’s eyes were also brimming with tears as he spoke earnestly, “It’s all good now. The family is finally back together. As long as we’re all safe and sound, that’s all that matters.”Â
Chloe just stood there, watching their little act in silence. She gave a cold snort and didn’t bother to respond, her eyes cold asÂ
ice.Â
‘They really think they can bleed me dry all over again, just like in my previous life? Pathetic,‘ she thought.Â
Seeing all this, Emily finally realized these folks really were Chloe’s family. But with all that tension in the air, there was clearly some bad blood between them. Sensing the awkward vibe, she wisely kept quiet and stayed out of it.Â
The commotion inside the car, plus the injured people, made the zombies on both sides of the road start howling and snarling.Â
Luckily, they’d already left Hevenseale, so there weren’t zombies everywhere anymore, and even those freaky mutant plants were way less of a problem.Â
The guy with the sniper rifle and the powered humans quickly took care of the zombies and mutant plants, wiping out each threat in no time.Â
But the weather just kept getting colder.Â
It was probably around -40°F now, and at night, the temperature kept dropping even lower. Nobody dared to shut off the bus engine, terrified that if they did, they’d never get it started again in this frozen wasteland.Â
With the sniper keeping them on a tight leash, Sam and his crew finally clammed up, throwing Chloe those looks that screamed blame.Â
Niko’s glare was the worst, angry, vicious, and totally unfiltered. He stared at Chloe like some ungrateful wolf, just waiting for a chance to sink his teeth into his own master.Â
“Grandma, I’m starving,” Niko said, his voice sharp and demanding.Â
Kiera hurriedly fished out the only cookies she had left, ones she’d kept hidden for so long, never once letting herself eatÂ
them.Â
“Here, my precious boy, Grandma still has a few cookies. You eat up,” Kiera said, her voice overflowing with affection.Â

As she said this, Kiera gave Chloe a greedy look and spoke in a low voice.Â

“You little brat, hurry up and give those pasta to your brother. He’s the only hope of this family. Give him the food, he’ll be the one to protect you when he grows up.” Kiera said.Â
She was actually restraining herself this time. If it had been before, she would’ve just snatched the pasta right out of Chloe’s hands and slapped her, just because she could.Â
Sam stared hungrily at the backpack in Chloe’s hands, quietly wiping away his tears.Â
No matter how much Kiera cursed or how loudly Niko cried and threw a tantrum, Chloe didn’t say a single word. She just kept her head down, looking like she was asleep.Â
Chloe was quietly weighing her options, trying to figure out the best way to handle this messed–up family.Â
Killing them was out of the question; she just couldn’t bring herself to do it.Â
Peaceful coexistence was not a chance. They’d just cling to her like vampires, leeching every last drop of blood and gnawing away at her flesh.Â
And in the end, they’d still complain that her meat wasn’t even worth eating.Â
The only thing she could do now was keep her distance and completely ignore them.Â
All that sobbing and complaining in the car was driving everyone up the wall; even the guy with the sniper rifle was starting to get seriously annoyed.Â
“Seriously, just shut up already. You’re making me lose my mind,” the sniper said, his voice full of irritation.Â
He gave them a look that could kill, pointing his sniper rifle right at them, finger itching on the trigger as he might shoot at any moment.Â
Kiera shrank back, her neck hunching in fear.Â
She shot Chloe a venomous glare and muttered through clenched teeth, “You little brat, what do you mean by that?”Â
“You old witch, it’s the apocalypse now; do you really think things are still like before? If you don’t want to end up dead, you’d better keep quiet. See over there? That sniper’s got his gun aimed right at you,” Chloe said coldly.Â
Kiera followed Chloe’s gaze and saw the dark muzzle of the sniper rifle pointed straight at them.Â
Her soul nearly fled her body in terror.Â
“Sweetie, look, Grandma hasn’t eaten in days. Please, just have a heart and give me something to eat. If you won’t do it because we’re family, at least do it for your mother’s sake,” Kiera said.Â
But the moment she mentioned Chloe’s mom, Chloe’s eyes burned with hatred.Â
“Oh, you mean for the time you tossed my mom and me out on the street? Or maybe for when you beat her until she was covered in blood?” Chloe shot back, her voice icy and dripping with sarcasm.Â
When Kiera saw that Chloe was totally unfazed, her gaze hardened, brimming with malice.Â
“You dirty little whore, all you did was latch onto some big shot,” Kiera snapped, her words laced with poison.Â
Before she could finish, Kiera got slapped hard across the face, a bright red handprint blooming instantly on her left cheek.Â
Frank’s eyes went wide, his right index finger jabbing right at Kiera’s face as he said, “You old hag, keep running your mouth like that, and I’ll make sure you don’t live to regret it.”Â

With another loud smack, he slapped her again.Â
Frank was a giant, his body packed with muscle, a thick beard covering his face, and a look so fierce it could make anyone’s blood run cold just by standing there.Â
Kiera was pinned under Frank’s fierce glare, her mouth snapping shut instantly. She hugged herself, trembling all over, not daring to make a sound.Â
Sam’s eyes flickered, landing on Rosalie, her face streaked with tears, looking all pitiful. A sneaky idea flashed through his mind. He grabbed her hand and dragged her over to Frank.Â
“Sir, this is my daughter. She goes to a fancy private school and hasn’t even had a boyfriend yet. She’s all yours,” Sam said.Â
In Sam’s mind, the only reason Frank stood up for Chloe was that he was into her looks. Rosalie, though, was sweet and fragile, the type that makes guys want to play hero.Â
Rosalie snuck a nervous glance at Frank, swallowing hard.Â
‘Oh my god, he’s so big and strong. I bet he’s amazing in bed, she thought, her cheeks flushing.Â
“Sir, whatever Chloe can do, I can do it too,” Rosalie said, biting her lip, her eyes misting over with tears, looking all pitiful and helpless, so innocent and fragile, anyone would feel sorry for her.Â
The meaning behind her words was obvious.Â
Frank went pale as a ghost at those words, throwing a nervous glance at Chloe. When he saw her face was totally blank, he let out a breath he didn’t even know he was holding.Â
Then he turned his gaze on Rosalie, eyes sharp and practically dripping with killing intent.Â
Who the fuck is this moron? Does she seriously think Chloe, this crazy badass, only made it this far because of me?‘ Frank thought.Â
He crossed his arms and gave Rosalie a cold stare. He asked, “You sure about that?”Â
Rosalie thought her little act was working, nodding like crazy, but before her smile could even spread, it froze on her face.Â
Frank grabbed her by the neck, baring his teeth in a vicious grin. He said, “You’re so damn ugly, you’re not even fit to carry Chloe’s shoes.”Â
That line crushed Rosalie’s pride underfoot. She’d always thought she was way above Chloe, always looking down on her as nothing but a busty airhead with princess syndrome.Â
And now, someone actually said she wasn’t even good enough to carry Chloe’s shoes. That was the ultimate slap in the face.Â
Fury exploded inside her, and she shot to her feet in an instant.Â
