Chapter 67Â

Sam just hung his head low.Â
“Mommy,” Niko said.Â

When Niko saw Vanessa, his eyes lit up, and he tried to rush into her arms, but Kiera held him back.Â
Niko said, “Grandma, what are you doing? That’s Mommy. My mommy is back.”Â
Kiera shot him a glare and said, “Your mommy? You’ve got the wrong person.”Â
Kiera clamped a hand over Niko’s eyes and held him tight, refusing to let him go.Â
Disgust was written all over her face.Â

Even Sam turned away in embarrassment. The woman who had been by his side for years was, in his eyes now, nothing but a brazen woman with no shame left.Â
Seeing this, anger and resentment flashed in Vanessa’s eyes.Â
But when her gaze landed on Niko, her eyes finally softened a bit.Â
She turned to one of the armed powered humans and said, “Chief, my son is over there. Can I go see him?”Â
Vanessa’s voice was naturally seductive, and she’d just made this powered human feel really good.Â
He tightened his grip on the gun and gave Vanessa’s ass a hard squeeze.Â
He said, “You’re such a dirty girl. Kiss Daddy and I’ll let you through.”Â
Shame and humiliation flashed in Vanessa’s lowered eyes as she shot a look at Sam, who was nearby.Â
He didn’t even spare her a glance, so spineless he looked like he wanted to disappear under his seat.Â
Vanessa quickly masked her disappointment and anger.Â
When she looked up again, she flashed a sycophantic smile at the sniper.Â
That pathetic loser can’t even save himself, and now he acts like I’m beneath him? Fine, if he thinks I’m trash, then I’ll just play the part, Vanessa thought.Â
Just to get back at Sam, she grabbed the guy by the neck and smacked a kiss right on his cheek.Â
Meanwhile, another man pulled her close from behind, his grubby hands slipping straight inside her shirt.Â
Two guys and one woman, tangled up like that; the whole scene was scandalous as hell.Â
Sam finally showed some reaction, his fists clenched, eyes burning with rage. But when he caught sight of those sniper rifles in the men’s hands, all that fight drained out of him; he just dropped his fists, powerless.Â
When faced with absolute power, all he could do was grit his teeth and swallow the humiliation.Â
Emily stared in shock, her cheeks blazing. She was still a sweet, innocent girl who’d never even been on a date.Â
This is just in broad daylight? Seriously, have they no shame at all?‘ Emily thought, her head spinning.Â
Parents on the bus rushed to cover their kids‘ eves trying to keep them from seeing this crazy mess.Â

Luckily, the two snipers just copped a feel a couple of times and didn’t take things any further.Â
Vanessa finally let out a breath she’d been holding.Â

Her seductive eyes swept across the bus, but when they landed on Chloe, Vanessa froze for a split second, clearly caught off guard, before quickly moving on.Â
Suddenly, she leaned in close to one of the snipers and whispered something in his car.Â
Chloe clearly saw the sniper glance over, a flicker of confusion and probing flashing in his eyes.Â
But he quickly looked away.Â
It was obvious that Frank and Emily had caught that heated look, too. They both tightened their grip on their weapons, keeping their cool.Â
The bus kept moving smoothly, heading out of the city without a hitch.Â
They ran into plenty of low–level zombies along the way, but the bus just crushed them under its wheels. At least there weren’t any huge zombie swarms like before.Â
It felt even colder than before.Â
Everyone squeezed together, sharing body heat to stay warm.Â
Vanessa made her way over to Rosalie and Niko, and the two kids buried themselves in her arms, clinging to her as they broke downÂ
tears.Â
Through their sobs, they mumbled softly to Vanessa, their voices barely audible.Â
Emily nudged Chloe’s arm, jerked her chin in that direction, and whispered.Â
Emily said, “Those two are badmouthing you.”Â
Chloe just shrugged, unsure how to respond.Â
Chloe thought, ‘Let them talk. If they don’t say anything bad about me, how am I supposed to retaliate?Â
‘I’m a saint, you know. I never hurt anyone first!’Â
Chloe ignored the family reunion and turned her gaze to the snowy landscape speeding by outside.Â
Suddenly, a streak of vibrant green flashed across the blanket of snow.Â
Chloe squinted, quickly reached for Emily’s hand, and whispered.Â
“Emily, can you use your spirit power to check if there’s any grass growing by that power pole on the side of the road?” ChloeÂ
said.Â
Emily blinked in confusion. She asked, “Seriously? It’s freezing out here. How could there be any grass?”Â
Still, even as she said that, Emily sent her spirit out, scanning around the power pole behind them just in case.Â
“Whoa, there really is a little green sprout. That’s wild; how the heck is it growing in the snow?” Emily said, totally baffled.Â
Chloe stiffened instantly at her words.Â
Chloe thought, her heart racing, ‘No way, that’s mutagenic herb.Â

‘Didn’t expect to stumble on a second one; now that’s a surprise bonus.Â

It was an extremely rare mutant herb that could grant powers to an ordinary person, turning them into a powered human.Â
Even in her previous life, it was so rare that it was never even on the market.Â
Chloe had spent her whole previous life longing for it, dying without ever getting her hands on one. But now, in this life, she’d actually come across two.Â
At one point, a mutagenic herb was so valuable that it could be traded for ten mutant cores.Â
Just as Chloe was trying to figure out how to get off the bus, everyone suddenly lurched forward. A whole row of people sitting in the aisle went down like dominoes.Â
The snow on the ground was so deep that when the bus slammed on the brakes, it skidded forward, and several vehicles crashed into each other at once.Â
Someone asked, “What’s going on?”Â
The bus erupted in chaos, and everyone looked up in panic, like a flock of startled birds.Â
Up ahead, a bunch of heavily armed powered humans stepped off another bus, each one carrying a sniper rifle.Â
They all looked dead serious.Â
Then the doors to Chloe’s bus swung open, and a few more people climbed on, their hawk–like eyes sweeping overÂ
everyone.Â
One of them pointed at the people in the front row and said coldly, “You, you, and you, come with me.”Â
The people who’d been called out were shaking like leaves, their voices trembling as they stammered, “Why?”Â
The big guy turned ghostly pale and stumbled backward. He said, “No way, I’m not going out there. I already gave you my food; you can’t just throw me off the bus.”Â
Seeing everyone hesitate, the sniper just lifted his gun and blew the guy away, no hesitation at all.Â
“Get off the bus. Go clear the roadblock up ahead,” he said coldly.Â
The survivors fell silent, too terrified to resist, and obediently got off the bus!Â
Now they had finally realized that this group was just using them as free labor. They were pissed, but none of them dared to show it.Â
Chloe and her two companions exchanged a glance. Their row had been called
out, too, but honestly, it worked out for Chloe; she needed to get off anyway, so this made things easier for her.Â
Right then, someone asked, “Who’s Frank?”Â
Frank shot his hand up and stood, bowing slightly with a fawning/grin. He said, “That’s me.”Â
The sniper’s expression softened noticeably. He said, “I heard you’re a second–level powered human? Mr. Quinn wants to see you.”Â
Frank nodded eagerly, bowing again and again. He replied, “Sure, sure, I’ll go.”Â
Frank hopped off the bus, and Chloe and Emily joined the rest of the crowd as they moved forward.Â
As soon as they stepped off the bus, the biting wind and frost hit them full force, making them shiver. The howling coldÂ

sliced across their faces like knives.Â

Chloe and Emily followed right behind the other survivors, scanning their surroundings out of the corner of their eyes.Â
Everywhere they looked, it was just endless white.Â
The temperature had been all over the place lately, so the snow on the ground melted and then froze again, turning into ice.Â
