Chapter 74Â
Frank had no idea Chloe possessed a spiritual space power. He just paused for a second and then got ready to step out of theÂ
car.Â
“Wait.” Chloe stopped him and grabbed two roasted chickens and a few cans of meat from the kitchenette. “Trade these for a place to stay tonight.”Â
Mindy’s family’s eyes lit up when they saw the food. Lisa licked her lips, looking a bit sour, and grumbled quietly, “Why are we giving them so much food?Â
“We could just crash into the car. It’s warm enough, and we can sleep here. I haven’t had a bite all day. Why don’t…Â
She stopped mid–sentence when Chloe shot her a frosty glare. Lisa instantly felt a chill crawl over her and clamped her mouth shut. After seeing that icy look from Chloe, nobody in the family dared to say a word.Â
Chloe suddenly strode over to Mindy’s mom, Amanda Fischer. Amanda shrank back, her tongue throbbing with searing pain, making her whole body tremble. She was so scared that she nearly wet herself.Â
And her son and husband, whom she used to dote on, just watched with cold indifference, even taking a few steps back without thinking. But to everyone’s surprise, Chloe just stopped bleeding for her, nothing more.Â
Chloe handed her a bottle of water. “Rinse your mouth and wash away the taste of blood.”Â
Tears of relief welled up in Amanda’s eyes as she felt her tongue stop bleeding. She poured the water into her mouth, swished it around a couple of times, and swallowed. Water was too precious to spit out.Â
Once she was done, Chloe started asking them out. She wasn’t some saintly type. The reason she healed Amanda was not out of kindness, but she just didn’t want the strong smell of blood attracting more zombies.Â
Besides, she wasn’t about to let anyone else stay in her RV. And she’d promised to repay Mindy for saving Frank’s life by. bringing them somewhere with people around. Well, there were people in the village.Â
Once everyone was gone, she finally opened the door and stepped out. Chloe put on her mask and baseball cap, and then slipped back into that dirty military coat. With it covering up her clean clothes, she blended in better.Â
She wolfed down two breads, slung her backpack over her shoulder, and got out of the car. Seeing no one around, she waved her hand and stashed the RV in her spiritual space.Â
In less than a minute, the darkness overhead deepened, even though it was barely four in the afternoon. She picked up her pace and quickly caught up with the group.Â
This was a small village with only about twenty households. Every home was a matching two–story building, and ringed by a fence made of wooden stakes.Â
A five–person squad came over, with two dogs in tow. Their internal alarm bells went off instantly when they saw Chole and the others. “Who are you? What are you doing here?” one of the men demanded.Â
Frank whipped out the roasted chickens and cans of meat they brought along. “Hey man, we’re just some folks trying to survive out here.Â
“It’s getting late, and we’ll freeze if we have to sleep outside. Can’we trade this food for a place to crash tonight?”Â
As soon as the five men heard there was food, their eyes lit up, and a man immediately pointed the solar flashlight at them. “Is that roasted chicken? And canned meat?”Â
The five burly guys couldn’t help but swallow hard. Meat was a distant memory for them. Frozen stiff or not, it was stillÂ
meat.Â

“What do you think?” a young man behind the man with the solar flashlight asked and tugged at his sleeve.Â
The man with the flashlight frowned, looking conflicted. Common sense said not to let strangers in, but that meat was hardÂ
to pass up.Â
The man might’ve been the leader, but he wasn’t about to make this kind of decision on his own. He looked back at his crew. “What do you guys think?”Â
They shot each other a look and nodded. The night was pitch black, so dark that they couldn’t see their own hand, but their eyes shone with a cold light, like predators lurking in the dark. Only they knew what that look meant.Â
“Come on in,” the leader said. On the way, he handed out a can of meat to each of his crew, then grabbed both roasted chickens and strode ahead.Â
The four guys trailing behind had their eyes glued to the chickens in his hands. They were clearly unhappy about it, but all they could do was grit their teeth and keep their mouths shut.Â
The leader said, “My old man’s the village chief, and we’ve got a couple of rooms to spare. You can stay at our place tonight.”Â
Three of the guys looked pretty reluctant to give up the chickens. They glanced at the roasted birds and the big packs Chloe’s group was carrying, forcing awkward smiles onto their faces.Â
They all started blurting out at once, trying to get ahead of each other. “Hey, why not stay at my place? There’s barely anyone at home, and we’ve got lots of rooms.”Â
“No, no, come to mine. It’s a two–story house with eight rooms, and it’s just my mom and me.”Â
The third guy didn’t want to lose out either. He grabbed Scott and gave a sneaky grin. “Come to my place. I’ve got plenty of rooms and even some extra food.Â
“It’s just my sister and me, and there are a bunch of empty houses next door. You can pick whichever you like.”Â
Just moments ago, these guys were reluctant to let them in, but now they were suddenly falling over themselves to invite these strangers. Chloe was immediately on alert.Â
Before anyone else could respond, Scott was the first to speak up and agree, “Alright, I’ll go to your place.”Â
In the end, Mindy and her family went with the man who lived with his sister back to his place. Right before they left, Chloe gave Mindy a little parcel. And just like that, they split up.Â
Mindy seemed to sense something. Her lips moved a few times, like she wanted to say something, but she kept quiet in the end.Â
She wanted to follow Chloe, but knowing Chloe would never take in her whole family, she could only leave with a heavy heart.Â
Frank was a sensory–powered human, so he was even more attuned to the eerie atmosphere around them than Chloe.Â
The young man walking next to the leader started chatting as they walked, “Ever since the apocalypse started, a bunch of people in our village turned into zombies.Â
“Luckily, younger guys like us acted fast and took care of it. So even though there are a lot of houses, there really aren’t that many people left.”Â
But the leader didn’t like what the young man was saying. He shot him a cold look and barked, “Andy, zip it.”Â
Andy snapped his mouth shut, suddenly realizing he’d just blurted out something he shouldn’t have.Â
The leader then said, “Sorry about my brother. He’s always running his mouth. Don’t mind him. That’s my place ahead.” HeÂ

pointed to a two–story house just ahead.Â
Standing at the door, Andy called out softly, “Dad, open up. We’re back.”Â
From inside, the sound of footsteps echoed toward the door. Soon, the door swung open, revealing an older man with a weathered face.Â
He spotted Chloe and the group, but didn’t say a word about it. He just pulled the door open and stepped aside to let themÂ
- in. “Come on in.”Â
“Dad, these folks just came in from outside today. They brought us canned food and roasted chickens and asked if they could stay the night,” the leader explained.Â
“Roasted chickens?” The old man echoed. He’d looked totally indifferent before, but now his whole face lit up, and he suddenly seemed way more welcoming.Â
He hurried to let everyone in and called out softly toward the house, “Honey, we’ve got guests. Get two rooms ready.”Â
“Got it,” came a woman’s voice from inside, her voice a little shaky.Â
“We might not have much else, but we’ve got plenty of blankets and bedding. Hope you don’t mind,” the old man said with a grin.Â
