Chapter 78 

Emily only heard the first and last sentences, feeling completely lost. “Chloe, what are you talking about?” 

Chloe snapped out of it, gave a soft laugh, and shook her head. “It’s nothing. Let’s get back to work.” 

She pulled out two big shovels from her spiritual space and pointed at the big willow tree that still had a glimmer of life, and started digging. 

Emily trusted Chloe completely, so she didn’t ask any more questions and just started digging alongside her. But the ground was already frozen solid, as hard as iron. Before long, both of them slumped to the ground, completely worn out. 

Emily sat down heavily, gasping for breath. “This is way too hard to dig.” 

Chloe felt the same way. She tossed her shovel back into her spiritual space and looked at the tiny pit they’d managed to dig after all that hard work. 

She fell into deep thought. ‘I can make ice, so maybe I can melt it or even remove it?‘ 

With that thought, she tested her power on the little pit. But instead of melting or absorbing the ice, she ended up freezing the pit even more, packing it solid with ice. 

Emily stared at her, totally baffled. “Chloe, what was that supposed to be?” 

Chloe just rubbed her nose awkwardly. “Seriously, you believe I didn’t do it on purpose?” 

Emily just gave a dry laugh. 

In the end, since they couldn’t come up with any better ideas, they had no choice but to go back to brute force and start digging again. 

They even had to use their powers. By the time they were completely spent, and both shovels were bent out of shape, they finally managed to dig up. 

The pit was twisted and knotted with roots, and countless thick ones wrapped around a massive rock. The big willow tree above was totally withered, but the roots underneath were bursting with life, growing strong and wild. 

It was as if the trunk and the roots belonged to two completely different species. 

“Holy crap, the roots are actually growing on a huge rock?” Emily blurted out and rubbed her eyes. “Wait, am I seeing things? Those roots look like they moved.” 

Suddenly, Emily’s face changed. Before her brain could even catch up, Chloe grabbed her and dragged her back instantly. 

The tangled, thick roots started writhing like snakes. Just as they jumped back, one of the roots shot up into the air, making a beeline for Chloe. 

The root narrowly missed them, slamming into the spot where they’d just been standing. It punched a 3–foot–deep hole into the frozen ground. 

Emily and Chloe exchanged a look, both seeing the shock in each other’s eyes. 

These roots were no joke. They were at least level three, maybe even pushing level four. 

Chloe was stunned, but didn’t waste a second before yelling at Emily, “These roots have intelligence now. There’s no way we can handle this alone. Go get Frank.” 

“But what about you?” Emily asked, her voice full of worry.

Chapter 78 

Chloe shoved Emily out of the danger zone and called out urgently, “The mutant roots can’t reach far. Don’t worry about me, just go.” 

This was the most dangerous spot in the whole village. The Zombie Girl and the mutant willow branches were already stashed away in her spiritual space. Even if there were other dangers elsewhere, Emily could handle them. 

Right now, her mental powers were only at level one, so she couldn’t really help out. 

Emily nodded hard and disappeared into the night. 

It was destined to be a sleepless night at the village chief’s house. The kerosene lamps were burning, and in the old couple’s bedroom, four people were tightly tied up together. 

“We were all asleep. I really have no clue where your friends are,” the old man stammered. He looked all flustered, his face scrunched up with wrinkles, looking every bit like an honest, hardworking farmer.. 

The other three kept nodding in agreement. “Yeah, seriously, nobody would stay up this late. You’re the one who woke us up,” one of them chimed in. 

Frank sat on the stool, his expression dark and unreadable, casually twirling a razor–sharp dagger in his hand. “They vanished right here in your house.” 

That line nearly sent the whole family over the edge. But they still stubbornly claimed they didn’t know anything. 

Frank suddenly snapped his gaze up, eyes full of menace. He waved the dagger dangerously close to the old man’s neck, almost making the poor guy faint from fear. 

“Spill it. What secrets are you hiding in this village?” Frank demanded. He was a powered human with four powers, and his sensory power could pick up someone’s true strength and warn him about danger. 

As soon as he set foot in this little village, he could feel something was off, but he just couldn’t put his finger on it. 

Normally, he was always on high alert at night, but tonight he slept like a rock. He thought he heard crying and singing, but it was all fuzzy, like a dream. 

When he woke up and realized something was wrong, he went to knock on the door next door. But there was no answer, so he kicked it open, and nobody was in there. 

So, there were only two possibilities left. Either Chloe wanted to ditch him, so she took Emily with her in the middle of the night. Or, just like him, they got lured away by that song and were taken by something. 

Frank was pretty sure it was the second one. But Frank wasn’t too worried. He could sense the creepy vibe in the village fading away, and he was pretty sure that was Chloe’s work. 

He had to find her. No way he was missing his shot to score some points with Chloe. 

A faint slicing sound cut through the air as the sharp dagger traced a thin line of blood across the old man’s neck. 

The old man screamed in terror and started spilling his guts right away. “Don’t kill me, please. I’m begging you. I’ll talk. I’ll tell you everything.”

Frank hurried out, and just as he stepped through the gate, he ran straight into Emily, who was sprinting toward him. They ended up in each other’s arms. 

Frank teased, “Emily, I know you have a thing for mature guys, but you don’t have to throw yourself at me so eagerly.” He helped her up, feeling a quiet sigh of relief inside.

Chapter 78 

‘Good thing Chloe didn’t sneak off with Emily. Maybe that means the witch is finally starting to accept me as part of the team. Frank thought to himself.

For once, Emily didn’t bother to banter with Frank. She was gasping for breath, her chest heaving. “Hurry. Chloe’s in trouble, we have to go help her.” 

Frank’s expression instantly turned serious. “Let’s go. Take me there.” He didn’t hesitate for a second. 

Frank was way weaker than Chloe, and Emily played up how much trouble Chloe was in on purpose. 

Normally, if even the strongest person was in danger, most folks would think going to help was just asking to get killed. But Frank didn’t even blink. He just told Emily to show him the way. 

That totally surprised Emily. For once, she thought maybe having him around wasn’t such a bad thing after all. When she looked at Frank, the usual annoyance faded, replaced by a bit of real warmth. 

“Why are you staring at me like that? Do you really get a crush or something?” Frank teased, flashing a cocky grin. 

Hearing his tease, Emily felt her favorability meter for him nosedive. She shot him a dirty look and, for once, actually cussed him out. “Get lost. You’re old and ugly. Like I’d ever go for someone like you.” 

Frank kept running, thumping his chest in mock relief. “Thank God I’m already married. Wouldn’t want you falling head over heels for me.”
