Chapter 72
Briana shot back. “At least I didn’t go drinking.”
Shepard said, “So what if 1 did? Is that unforgivable?”

Briana didn’t want to argue with him anymore. She looked around and started walking toward the doctor’s office. Shepard, however, took a long stride and blocked her path.
What are you doing?” Briana asked, looking up at him. Because of their height difference, she had to tilt her head, which made her seem smaller.
“I believe you really want a divorce, Shepard said. “Briana, you’re bold.”
Briana’s smile grew brighter and more radiant. “Finally, you believe me. That wasn’t easy. From now on, please stop being so narcissistic and thinking that everything I do is just to get your attention, okay?
Also, I truly wish you and Vivian a happy life together, forever.
Shepard’s gaze darkened and deepened. “Why?” he asked.
“Huh?”
Briana frowned, confused. “What?”
“Are you hoping that after divorcing me, you can be with Henry Shepard stepped closer, closing the gap. “After all, he waited five years for you. Finally, he can stop being the backup.
Briana took a step back. “Vivian can also stop being a backup, right?”
“Vivian was never a backup,” he said firmly.
“Oh. okay Briana nodded. “She wasn’t, and I was. She’s your true love, and I’m your compromise. Happy now?”
Shepard kept coming closer, taking longer strides. Briana had nowhere to retreat. Her back pressed against the cold tile, unsure what kind of madness he was in this time.
If she had known he would show up at the hospital now, she would have chosen another time to avoid him. She wanted to see him so badly before. Now, she just wanted to get away.
“Did you sleep with Henry Shepard asked suddenly. “Tell me the truth.”
Briana looked baffled. She scoffed and said mockingly, “Do you really care that much?”
“Answer me,” Shepard demanded.
“I’ve said it countless times, Briana replied. “Do I need to repeat Shepard, not everyone can sneak around in love and marriage like you. I only have one heart. I can only love one person.”
“So, you loved me before, and now you love him?”
Why are you asking that?” Briana frowned. “Have I ever asked you if you slept with Vivian?“
She already knew the answer. She didn’t need to ask. She was sure about all those moments of passion, body and soul entwined
Shepard kept a serious expression. “You can ask me.”
“I won’t,” Briana said. “People should know when to stop. If the answer is obvious, there’s no need to lift the covering layer”

Chapter 72
“Obvious Shepard sneered. During our five–year marriage, I never dept with Vivian”
Briana reacted immediately. “You mean after the divorce, you did?
“I probably did,” he admitted.
Briana laughed. She really laughed out loud. It was the first time she had ever heard someone answer “probably” to a question about sleeping with someone.
“Aren’t you sure whether you slept with her Briana asked. “Is that some new line from a sleazy guy?”
Shepard’s Adam’s apple moved slightly, but he could not answer. He really did not know if he had taken advantage of Vivian while drunk last night.
Logic told him he hadn’t, but Vivian insisted that he had. He didn’t know whether to trust himself or believe her. His heart wavered, uneasy and unsettled.
Shepard asked himself what exactly he was worried about, but he couldn’t figure it out. All he could do was ask Briana if she had been intimate with Henry. That would make him feel better.
If they had both made the same mistake, it would even things out. Yet he realized that if Henry and Briana really had slept together, he would feel nothing but anger.
His possessiveness roared inside him, out of control. After a moment, Shepard suddenly asked, “Briana, do you really love Henry
Briana thought he had lost it, completely. “I can love whoever I want. That’s my choice, and I don’t have to tell you.” Briana
said.
“When we first divorced, we had to pretend everything was fine. Now that it’s all out in the open, please stay away from me. Can we keep our distance?” she added.
People walking by stared at them curiously. Shepard, tall, handsome, and commanding, a naturally noble heir, always stood out in any crowd.
Briana bit her lip and shoved him hard with both hands. Crazy the thought. Shepard leaned back slightly, and Briana slipped out from under his arm, escaping his embrace.
She walked as fast as she could without looking back to make sure he couldn’t grab her again. After a few steps, she saw chaos at the end of the hallway.
Several nurses were rushing a stretcher toward the ICU. On the stretcher, a doctor knelt, urgently treating a patient who was bleeding heavily. The doctor’s hands and coat were covered in bright red blood. “Make way! Step aside!!
People in the hallway quickly moved, including Briana. The stretcher sped past her. It went too fast to see clearly, but she caught a glimpse.
Flesh and blood were torn, and the air smelled sharply of iron. The scent mixed with the hospital disinfectant, and Briana felt an instinctive warning.
Before she could steady herself, waves of nausea hit her. “Ugh–She covered her mouth, bent over, and faced the wall, dry hearing violently.
Her morning sickness had been bad lately. She had been careful, avoiding greasy or heavy foods, eating lightly, but now, in the hospital, all the nausea she had held back over the past few days came rushing up.
“Ugh-“Briana heaved until she felt dizzy, but nothing came up. Her stomach twisted painfully. Tears slid from her eyes, and her face flushed bright red. She hunched over, holding the wall just to stay upright.

She needed water. Briana fumbled for her bag and finally grabbed a water bottle, but her hand shook as nausea hit her, and she dropped it..
Things couldn’t get worse. She squatted slowly, reaching for it, but another long, elegant hand had already picked it up.
The hands were beautiful and well–defined, the same hands that had walked with her countless times along the tree–lined paths of Aetherton University.
