Emily, showing rare loyalty, joked, “That’s right. We’re teammates! If your wife is having a baby, then she’s basically my wife, too. No way I’m bailing when my ‘wife‘ is giving birth!” 

Mindy snorted with laughter at that, but quickly clamped a hand over her mouth when she realized it wasn’t the right 

moment. 

She swung her whip through the air, its sound soft and almost musical. 

“Exactly! We’re a team. You can’t just ditch us,” she teased. 

As soon as she finished, she lashed her whip again, and the zombie’s head flew off its body in one swift motion. 

But soon, everyone realized this couldn’t go on. They were burning through their powers faster than they could recover. 

Emily, with her level–one ability, was the first to hit her limit. She was running on fumes, barely able to stand. 

Mindy, whose powers came in explosive bursts, was running on empty too. 

Just then, Chloe suddenly tossed a mutant willow branch. 

“Use this,” Chloe said. 

The mutant willow branch was still vibrant and green, but there wasn’t a single leaf left on it. 

As soon as Mindy got her hands on it, she instantly felt a surge of energy. 

Mindy’s eyes sparkled with surprise. She gave her wrist a test swing, and the zombies in front of her dropped like dominoes. 

She stared at the mutant willow branch in disbelief. She’d barely tapped into her power with that swing, but it hit way harder than she thought possible. 

Compared to forming a whip out of pure energy, this took like 80% less effort, and hit even harder. 

‘Damn, when did mutant plants get this OP?‘ Mindy thought, eyes 

wide. 

Mindy shot Chloe a grateful look. ‘Seriously, how did I get so lucky to end up with a boss like Chloe?‘ she thought. 

‘Maybe the universe saw how rough my life was before and decided to cash in all my luck on meeting Chloe,‘ she mused. 

On the second floor of the supermarket, a woman suddenly let out a scream. 

“Why are there so many zombies down there?” Her panicked voice snapped a bunch of numb survivors back to reality. 

One by one, people poked their heads out the windows to look down. 

When they saw a horde of zombies flooding in from the distance, they totally lost it and started screaming too. 

Sure, they’d gotten used to seeing gross, freaky zombies since the apocalypse started, but never this many. Each zombie’s face, usually just dead gray, was now frozen blue from the cold. ; 

Their rotting flesh was enough to make you want to hurl. 

Just as everyone was freaking out, someone shouted, “There’s a pregnant woman giving birth here!” 

That one sentence sent shockwaves through the crowd, and all eyes snapped to the woman who’d spoken.

It was Nina, a beautiful pregnant woman, clinging to a tall, skinny guy in gold–rimmed glasses. She was staring at Joan, the tan–skinned woman beside her, her face full of fear. 

Joan bit down hard on her lip, refusing to make a sound. The pain was tearing her apart, sweat pouring down her face, but she kept her mouth shut. 

As everyone turned to stare, a wave of sharp insults and nasty glares crashed over her, and her heart hit rock bottom. 

Joan knew it. She was next to be thrown to the zombies. 

She gave her daughter one last, longing look, took a deep breath, and turned to the man who was about to grab her, her voice cold as ice. 

“I’ll walk out there and feed myself to the zombies, but you have to give me a bottle of warm water and some bread first,” she said. 

Hearing that, a few of the guys sneered, “You think you’re in any position to bargain with us?” 

As they reached out to grab her, ready to throw her out, 

Joan suddenly burst out laughing, fighting through the pain as she forced herself upright, her icy gaze sweeping over 

everyone. 

“Either you give me what I want, or we all go down together,” she said coldly. 

She suddenly whipped out a grenade and held it high above her head, sending everyone into a panic as they dove for cover. 

Nina’s face turned deathly pale. She pointed a shaking finger at Joan, her voice trembling. “Are you insane? You’ll get us all killed!” 

Joan’s bloodshot eyes fixed on Nina. “Hey, Nina, what if I told them to toss you down there with me as my final wish? Think they’d hesitate for a second?” 

“You wouldn’t dare,” Nina stammered, her voice shaking. 

Nina went pale and instantly buried herself in her husband’s arms. 

She didn’t dare say another word. Not even her powered husband could save her now. 

“Well? Are you gonna agree or not?” Joan demanded, her tone icy and unyielding. 

Joan turned to the powered guy, raising her voice as she fought through the pain, sweat streaming down her face as she hunched over. 

The zombies‘ roars from below got even more intense. The leader gave a nod to the woman next to him, and she got up, heading toward the corner where the supplies were kept. 

There was a mountain of supplies piled up there, all managed by the head honcho of the survivors, 

“Warm water? In this weather? All we’ve got is frozen bottled water,” the woman said, making a face as if Joan was beneath her while she handed the stuff over. 

She passed the items to Joan, still looking down her nose at her. 

Joan didn’t say a word. She quickly stuffed the bread into Molly’s arms, her face tight with urgency. 

“Quick, eat the bread!” she urged. 

Molly’s face was streaked with tears as she clung to Joan, shaking her head desperately. “No, I won’t let you go! Dad will come

for us. I know he will!”

Joan suddenly shouted, her bloodshot eyes fierce. Without another word, she grabbed Molly’s jaw and stuffed the bread into her mouth. 

“Eat it!” she growled, her voice rough with tears but still forceful. 

She knew that once she was gone, with all those starving people lurking around, there was no way Molly could hold onto that bread for long. 

It was better for her to eat it now, while she still could. 

Nina shot a death glare at the grenade clutched in Joan’s hand. 

‘Damn it, Joan! You told me you were out of grenades, and now you pull this on me?‘ Nina fumed, her anger bubbling up. 

They’d been on the run together before. Nina’s husband had unlocked his water powers along the way, while Joan never got any abilities herself. But one day, Joan stumbled across a government supply drop from a chopper. 

Inside the drop were guns, ammo, grenades, a few bottles of water, and some rations of biscuits. 

With just those supplies and Molly’s danger–sensing ability, they managed to make it up to the second floor of the supermarket. 

At first, there weren’t many people, so life was manageable. But as more survivors poured in and some started awakening powers, things quickly went downhill for Joan and Molly. 

The strongest powered humans took control of all the food, and as powerless regular folks, Joan and Molly basically had no say in who got what. 

Before long, they became the lowest of the low among the survivors. 

Meanwhile, Nina, the pretty pregnant woman, had it a bit better. Her husband had water powers, sure, they weren’t much use in a fight, but in the apocalypse, being a water–powered human made one seriously valuable. 

So even though Nina didn’t have much food, she never had to go hungry. Whenever she glanced at Joan, her old neighbor, she couldn’t help but look down on her a little. 

The struggle was still going on. Molly was bawling her eyes out, trying her hardest to warn Joan about her premonition. 

But reality was staring them in the face; there was no time to hesitate. 

The head honcho exchanged a glance with a powered human, who sneaked up behind Joan, clutching a sharp fire axe. 

Suddenly, Molly’s face changed, like she had a sixth sense about what was coming. With all the strength she could muster, she shoved Joan out of the way.
