Chapter 87 

As soon as Frank said that, all the survivors looked at each other, but not a single one dared to speak up. 

Frank lost his patience. He yanked the guy at the front and held his machete to the guy’s throat. 

“Speak up! Is there a doctor here?” Frank barked. 

His eyes were bloodshot. He looked like the kind of guy who could kill someone without blinking. 

The survivor was shaking like a leaf, and the sharp stench of urine filled the air. He’d pissed his pants in terror. 

Frank flung the guy a dozen feet away. “Pathetic.” 

He reached out to grab the next person, but Mindy stopped him. 

Mindy, with her gentle nature, met the terrified gazes of the survivors and spoke slowly. 

“We have a pregnant woman who’s about to go into labor. Can anyone here help deliver the baby? I’ll trade ten sandwiches for your help.” 

Her words instantly caused a commotion among the crowd. 

Everyone was whispering among themselves, but nobody had the guts to step forward. 

Just then, Liana, an old woman who looked to be about seventy, slowly raised her trembling hand. 

Her hair was a mess of gray, her lips cracked and dry. Liana looked like she’d been through hell and back, barely surviving the cold and hunger. 

Only a month into the apocalypse, and it had already turned her into a walking skeleton. 

“I–I can.” Liana stammered. 

As soon as Liana stood up, a bunch of doctors in the crowd started itching to volunteer, their eyes lighting up with interest. 

There were actually quite a few doctors among the survivors, but when they saw Mindy didn’t actually have any supplies on her, they hesitated. 

Plus, nobody wanted to piss off Drake, so nobody reall 

believed Mindy would actually hand over ten sandwiches. 

Now that Liana had raised her hand, some of them looked frustrated, torn between wanting to step up and being too scared 

to make a move. 

Liana glanced nervously at Drake, so terrified that she nearly lost her nerve. 

Frank darted right up to her and said urgently, “Come with me, quick!” 

Without hesitation, Frank grabbed Liana and dashed downstairs. 

Mindy brought up the rear, calling out to the survivors again. “Any other doctors? Step forward, and I’ll give you two sandwiches!” 

That got a few people riled up. 

A man stepped forward, chin raised in defiance. 

“Why just two?” he challenged.

Chapter 87 

“Yeah, you said ten just now!” someone else called out. 

“Exactly! You can’t just go back on your word like that. We’re not going.” 

Mindy just smirked, didn’t bother saying anything, and walked off. 

What do they take me for, a pushover?‘ she thought. ‘If they’re not interested, whatever.‘ 

“Hope you don’t regret it,” she called out. 

With that, she disappeared around the corner of the stairs. 

Someone couldn’t hold back anymore and stood up, about to shout something, but the person next to him quickly pulled him back down. 

“Don’t be stupid. Who’d give away so much just to deliver a baby in times like these? Bet there’s a catch,” the person whispered. 

The guy hesitated, then sat back down. 

“True, even if there’s really a pregnant woman, nobody’s gonna trade that much for it,” another person chimed in. 

“Yeah, and with how messed up things are outside, you gotta be extra careful with strangers,” someone else added. 

He got real close and whispered in the doctor’s ear. 

“Did you hear? The world out there’s already gone to hell. In a lot of places, people are so desperate for food, they’ve started eating each other.” 

The doctor’s eyes went wide with terror. He was practically hyperventilating, hands shaking like crazy. 

“Do you even know what you’re saying?” he choked out. 

The image popped into his head, and his face turned ashen. He felt sick to his stomach and couldn’t help it. He puked, but with nothing in his stomach, it was just sour spit. 

The person next to him looked pretty pleased with how the doctor reacted. 

“See? Those two who just came in are in trouble. All that talk about helping a pregnant woman give birth, bet they’re just trying to lure people downstairs and turn them into d meat,” he whispered. 

That was enough to kill any thought the doctor had about going down there. 

“Thanks,” the doctor said weakly, wiping the corner of his mouth with his sleeve. 

“No problem. Times are tough. We should help each other out,” the woman said, but her eyes were cold and showed not a 

hint of kindness. 

She couldn’t care less if that doctor ended up as canned meat. What really pissed her off was the thought that there might actually be a woman giving birth downstairs. 

‘If only I were a doctor, she thought bitterly. ‘If I can’t get those supplies, then no one else is getting them either. 

Meanwhile, Frank practically hauled Liana, the seventy–year–old obstetrician, down to the first floor. Her heart was pounding with anxiety, and her legs were trembling so much that she could barely stand. 

But she really had no choice. She hadn’t eaten in days. If things kept going like this, she’d be dead soon anyway. 

‘May as well risk it,‘ she thought. ‘Either way, it’s a gamble with my life.’

Chapter 87 

As soon as they reached the ground floor, she was shoved into an RV. 

The instant she stepped inside, the warmth washed over her, and she felt herself relax all over. She couldn’t help but take a deep breath. 

“To have a place this comfortable in the apocalypse, whoever owns this place must be someone important, she thought. 

“Are you a doctor?” 

Chloe’s voice was cold and suspicious as she looked at Liana, sounding doubtful. 

“I–I’ve been an obstetrician for fifty years. I’m retired now, but I’ve got tons of experience,” Liana said, her voice shaky. 

Not wanting to get kicked out, Liana rushed forward. 

When she saw who was lying on the bed, her eyes went wide in shock. 

“Joan?” Liana gasped, her voice shaky with disbelief. 

Her wrinkled face quivered, and inside, her mind was a whirlwind of shock. 

Joan had just caused a huge commotion, and since they’d escaped to this place together, of course, Liana recognized her. 

Back then, Liana’s heart ached for this girl’s miserable situation, but she’d been powerless to help. 

She never imagined the pregnant woman making all these tough guys so anxious would actually be Joan. 

‘Finally, some justice,‘ Liana thought, feeling a wave of relief. ‘Maybe fate hasn’t completely abandoned her after all.’ 

Liana rushed over. Joan’s pants were already off, and the bleeding had stopped, a good sign, at least. 

Liana blinked in surprise. She distinctly remembered Joan leaving with blood pouring out, like she was hemorrhaging. ‘Was I wrong? Did I misjudge the situation?‘ she wondered. 

But something about all this just didn’t sit right with her. 

“Quit staring and help my wife deliver!” Frank snapped, his voice rough and urgent. 

Frank saw the doctor just standing there, lost in thought, when every second counted, and his temper flared. He looked ready to snap someone’s neck. 

Liana flinched at Frank’s outburst, her hands trembling as she stammered, “Okay, I’m on it.” 

‘What?‘ Liana paused, momentarily stunned. 

She froze again as Frank’s low, menacing voice sounded behind her. She felt cold steel against her neck, a machete at her throat. 

But this time, instead of being scared out of her wits, Liana actually felt an unexpected sense of relief. 

“Don’t worry, sir. Your wife will be fine, but-” Liana said, her voice steady. 

“But what?” Frank blurted out, his nerves on edge, 

Liana sighed deeply, “The baby’s at risk, and with the trauma her belly took earlier, she probably won’t be able to have any more kids.” 

Frank quietly breathed out, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders. ‘As long as Joan survives, that’s enough. In a world where people eat each other, having a baby isn’t exactly a blessing,‘ he thought.

Joan cried out in pain, her voice barely more than a whisper. 

Suddenly, blood started gushing out from under Joan again. Frank’s eyes nearly popped out of his head as he yelled, “Hurry up and deliver the baby!” 

Chloe had no choice but to shove Frank out and tell him to stand guard at the door. ‘With him freaking out like that, he’ll just mess things up,‘ she thought. 

Mindy stood outside, giving Frank a sideways look. “Got kicked out, huh?” she said coolly.
