Chapter 89Â
Seeing Drake didn’t respond, the man continued, “I just checked the stairwell. The supermarket entrance is untouched, but there’s a hole in the wall, blocked by a thick layer of ice.”Â
He paused. “I suspect there’s also an ice–powered human in their group.”Â
Drake looked genuinely puzzled, idly rubbing his chin with his thumb and index finger.Â
“If that’s true, then how did the RV show up?” he asked.Â
Everyone glanced at each other, completely baffled.Â
Some of the newly awakened powered humans stood up behind them, protesting angrily.Â
“Drake, no matter what, we can’t let that pregnant woman downstairs stay. She’ll doom us all,” one of them protested.Â
These newly awakened powered humans had barely seen any real combat. All they really did was bully regular people.Â
After feeling superior for so long, they’d lost touch with reality and forgotten their own limits.Â
Even when they ran into someone truly dangerous, they still thought they could go toe–to–toe with them.Â
Everyone nodded in agreement. Someone went over to the window, peered through the gap, and his legs turned to jelly.Â
“D–Drake, there are even more zombies down there,” he stammered.Â
Even though the zombies couldn’t break in right away, with all that pounding, the supermarket doors were bound to give way sooner or later.Â
The survivors started whispering among themselves, their voices growing louder and louder until they were openly protesting. “Kill that pregnant woman, or we’re all dead.”Â
Nina, the beautiful pregnant woman in the crowd, went pale and instinctively reached out to touch her belly.Â
Peyton, seeing this, silently pulled her into his arms.Â
Peyton whispered, “Don’t be afraid. We’re not like the others. I’m a powered human.”Â
Because they were powered humans, they were treated well, so Nina had never really faced any danger.Â
Of course, that was only true as long as she hadn’t given birth yet.Â
Judging by the size of her belly, she was probably due in about a month.Â
The survivors on the second floor were getting more and more riled up, their voices rising with every passing moment.Â
All their anger and frustration were being taken out on the woman giving birth downstairs.Â
“Damn woman! Why did she have to go into labor now? She’s the reason all those zombies are swarming us!” someone yelled.Â
“Drake, you’re tough as nails. Just lead the powered humans downstairs and take them all out!” someone shouted. “Yeah, that pregnant woman is going to get us all killed!” someone else chimed in.Â
“Drake, we’ve got so many people. Are we really afraid of just a handful of them?” another yelled.Â

“Yeah, grab your weapons and let’s rush down there! We’ve got the numbers to overwhelm them easily!” someone else shouted.Â
Everyone was talking at once, and to them, the woman giving birth downstairs had become public enemy number one.Â
Everyone was out for her blood.Â
Drake singled out the loudest shouters. He said they could storm downstairs with him and drive the woman out.Â
But the moment he singled them out, the bravado vanished. Those same survivors fell dead silent, shrinking back as if they wished the walls would swallow them whole.Â
It was a perfect display of human selfishness. Unless a problem struck them personally, they never felt its sting.Â
Drake snorted, his voice dripping with contempt. “You bunch of useless trash! You hyped up the whole crowd, so now you gotta go, whether you want to or not.”Â
These survivors were weak as kittens, only still breathing because they were just cannon fodder waiting to be zombie snacks.Â
It was still freezing cold out there, so cold that even the air felt sluggish and any liquid would instantly turn to ice. The scent of blood barely lingered in the air.Â
Downstairs, it was just the local zombies making a move.Â
Still, that was enough to scare the living daylights out of everyone, leaving them frozen in fear.Â
“Alright, guys, grab your weapons,” Drake called out.Â
Drake couldn’t sit still any longer. There were intruders in his territory, and he was itching to go face them.Â
What really caught his attention was a hint of food cooking drifting through the air. He wondered if he was just imagining it.Â
He figured he’d better go check it out himself.Â
He rounded up a dozen of his powered humans and, to boost his presence, picked out a few tough–looking young men from the crowd to join him.Â
He marched forward with swagger, looking every bit like a gang boss straight out of a TV show.Â
Mindy’s sharp eyes caught sight of the group, and she ellwed Frank. “Here comes the dead meat, just lining up to getÂ
themselves killed.”Â
Drake stopped about 30 feet from the RV and bowed slightly to Frank, showing a mix of respect and authority.Â
“I’m Drake, the one in charge here. Where’s your crew from?” he asked/Â
As he glanced down, his nose twitched. He caught an even stronger whiff of food in the air.Â
Frank gave a cold laugh. “Frank. Joan’s husband.”Â
Drake stiffened, staring up in shock and disbelief. “What?”Â
“The woman you threw downstairs,” Frank said, his voice dropping to a deadly, controlled calm. “The one you beat until her unborn child died. That was my wife.”Â
It was shattered by a bright, piercing cry. “Daddy!”Â
Molly came running out of the RV. Frank nearly lost it as tears stung his eyes and all his rage vanished in an instant. He scooped up his little girl, holding her so tight.Â

When Drake and his crew saw Molly step out of the RV, they were floored. She looked completely transformed, like a brand-Â
new person.Â
Gone were the filthy rags she’d been wearing. Now she was dressed in a spotless pink down jacket, her cheeks fresh and rosy.Â
It seemed impossible, but she must have found a way to take a shower.Â
Everyone’s expression shifted instantly. A low murmur of disbelief spread through the group.Â
The sheer impossibility of it left them speechless.Â
The temperature outside was a brutal negative eighty degrees Fahrenheit. The ground was frozen solid, and a cup of boiling water tossed into the air would flash–freeze before it hit the ground.Â
Taking a shower was utterly unthinkable. In that kind of cold, just taking off your hat for a second could freeze your ears right off.Â
‘What does that tell us?‘ Drake wondered, his mind spinning. ‘That RV’s definitely not just some regular ride. It’s gotta have everything you’d need to live comfortably inside. Bet it’s even got heating!‘Â
Just the thought of it made Drake’s eyes darken with interest.Â
Jerry sidled up to him. “Drake, when that little brat came out just now, I caught a glimpse inside. There’s some seriously good food in there.”Â
It was just a split second, but the sight of a whole spread of steaming, mouthwatering dishes made everyone’s mouths water.Â
And the rich, savory, and absolutely irresistible smell drifted out, even making Drake drool a little.Â
For over a month now, all they’d had was bread and pasta. It had been ages since any of them had tasted real food like that.Â
Kaisen sidled up, whispering with greedy excitement, “Drake, let’s just take ‘em out and grab that RV for ourselves. I bet it’s super warm inside.”Â
“Totally! I just caught a glimpse of a smoking hot babe in there. She’s drop–dead gorgeous!” Jerry added.Â
Drake’s greed was kicking in.Â
He’d gotten a quick peek inside earlier, and what he saw just made him want it even more.Â
He started sizing up whether he could actually pull this off.”Â
The whole crew was just one guy, three women, plus a pregnant woman and a kid.Â
So those two who went upstairs just now? They had to be the strongest in their group.Â
Maybe it was one of those setups with a bunch of girls and just one guy.Â
As that thought crossed his mind, his eyes lit up with excitement.Â
He began quietly laying out his plan, making sure no one else caught on.Â
Drake leaned in and whispered, “Wait for my signal. Watch me and move when I do.”Â
Drake slowly walked up to Frank, putting on a friendly, easygoing smile.Â
“Hey, man, I’m really sorry. I honestly didn’t know Joan was your wife. If I had, I wouldn’t have dared to mess with you,” he said, trying to sound all chummy.Â

Molly seemed to know exactly what was coming. There was no fear in her eyes, only a hatred so cold it bordered on mockery, as if she were silently laughing at them all.Â
