There were so many things that some Briana had already forgotten, while others she could still recall.

The reason Briana was so drawn to and dependent on Shepard was that she grew up in a world without parents, forced to rely on others, her family’s inheritance stolen. Then Shepard came into her life, like a ray of hope breaking through the darkness.

At her lowest, when she was utterly lost and alone, it was Shepard who reached out, took her hand, and stayed by her side through those dark days.

“Lost in thought again?” Charles waved his hand in front of Briana’s face. “We need to figure out how to deal with Sophia. Her coming back is bad news for us. Edward must have called her back to take over the Lane Group.”

“I saw that coming,” Briana replied.

“Really? Did Edward say anything about it?” Charles asked.

Briana replied, “After Edward found out about my divorce from Shepard, he actually went out of his way to see me. I told him that whatever’s mine, I’ll fight to take it back.”

Charles paused, a little taken aback. “You’re talking big, Briana.”

“Did I say anything wrong, Charles?” Briana retorted.

“No, you’re not wrong, but do you really think that’s possible?” Charles replied.

The Lane Group was full of Edward’s trusted inner circle and right–hand men.

Let alone taking it back. Even landing a position at the Lane Group would be nearly impossible for Charles and Briana.

“Nothing’s truly impossible. If you go for it, there’s always a chance,” Briana said with a smile. “Edward had to urgently call his precious daughter back from abroad. That means even he’s afraid I might actually win the company back.”

Charles leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. “Briana, of course, I want to get the company back, too. It was built by our parents. But we have to be realistic. We’re completely on our own here.

“Even if we go to Grandma, she won’t take our side. She’s not going to get involved in all this. Honestly, whether the company is in our hands or Edward’s, it’s all the same to her.

“That’s why she’s always just turned a blind eye all these years,” he added.

If Wrenley tried to take anyone’s side, it’d just cause trouble.

So she always stayed out of it.

She never meddled or asked about any of it.

And honestly, she was getting up there in years. She just didn’t have the energy to deal with all that anymore.

Briana shrugged. “Let’s just head to the Carter residence first.”

Once they were ready, the two of them set off.

Briana was in the passenger seat, putting on her makeup to save time.

With Sophia around, she needed to look flawless.

Just as she finished her makeup, they pulled up.

The Lane residence was lively and packed with people.

The kitchen was bustling as everyone got ready for a big family feast, while in the living room, the whole clan was sprawled out together, chatting and laughing, just soaking up the good vibes.

Sophia cozied up next to Wrenley, lying on the charm. “Grandma, you’re the one I’ve missed and worried about the most. I’m so glad I finally get to be with you again.

“Promise me you’ll stay healthy and live to see the day when our family has four generations together.”

“You little charmer, you’re still as sweet–talking as ever,” Wrenley said with a smile.

“I mean every word, Grandma. Having you here is like having a treasure in the family. You’re the anchor that keeps us all together,” Sophia replied.

When Briana walked into the living room, that’s exactly what she saw.

If anyone expected her to dote on Grandma and lay on the charm like that, there was no way she could ever pull it off.

Briana just wasn’t that kind of person.

Charles hurried over and called out, “Grandma, Briana, and I are here.”

“Oh, you’re here. Come, sit down,” Wrenley greeted them with a big smile. Then, noticing Briana, she looked around, a little surprised. “Just you? Where’s Shepard? Didn’t he come with you?”

Before Briana could answer, Wrenley added, “A family dinner is all about having everyone together. Did you forget to let

him know?”

After a brief pause, Briana smiled and replied, “Oh, Grandma, of course I didn’t forget. I told him, but he’s got a really important meeting at noon and can’t get away, so he couldn’t make it. He asked me to send his best to you.”

“I see. Well, running such a huge company all by himself, he must be really busy,” Wrenley said.

Edward and Diana sat together on the couch, exchanged glances, but didn’t say a word.

Sophia blurted out, “Come on, Briana, you’ve got to be honest with Grandma. Even when I was overseas, I heard all about it. It’s all over the place. Why are you still trying to hide it?”

They might take the same acting class or something.

“Nothing to see here,” Sophia laughed, brushing it off and switching gears. “Charles, long time no see. You’re looking even more handsome. Bet you’ve got half the girls in town swooning over you.

Briana was just a couple of years older than Sophia.

She was suddenly talking about skincare.

She was just throwing shade.

Briana flashed a sly smile. “You haven’t changed at all, Sophia. Actually, you’re aging even better than me. Looks like those cosmetic procedures overseas really are next–level.

“So, which clinic did you get your work done at? That nose job is so natural. Your doctor’s got some great skills.”

Sophia always believed her plastic surgery was so subtle that nobody could ever tell, so she kept claiming she had an all- natural look and only did regular beauty treatments, never any actual work.

But Briana just exposed her, no mercy.

Besides, the last time they saw each other was at Christmas. It had been over half a year since then.

But now, Briana was clearly in a much better place than she was back then.
