“What, you trying to rob me?” he shot back. 

Frank sneered. “If I was really out to rob you, you wouldn’t even be alive right now.” 

Peyton was fuming and was about to turn and leave, but Nina tugged at his sleeve, stopping him. 

“Honey…” she whined, her voice all sweet and needy. 

Her tone was so soft and coquettish that Peyton almost caved in.

One burly guy got up, rallying a bunch of other tough–looking dudes with him. Even though Peyton was a powered human, he knew better than to mess with a crowd like that. 

His water power was barely awakened–he wasn’t much of a threat, just a little stronger than your average person. If he pissed off the whole group, he’d be totally screwed. 

Peyton rushed to calm everyone down, stepping forward. “Guys, I really didn’t have a choice here. You have no idea how tough it is being the leader. 

“The folks downstairs barely have any supplies left. If they want to trade, what am I supposed to do?” 

He was acting like the folks downstairs twisted his arm into making the trade. 

No one here was stupid. Everyone had heard Nina asking for meat. 

“If you hadn’t gone down there begging for their food, you really think they’d have made you trade?” someone shot back. 

“Yeah, when Drake was in charge, even if he was strict with us, he never let food go to waste,” one of the survivors added. 

“That’s right, these supplies are for everyone. Who are you to make decisions for all of us?” someone else called out. 

With that, more and more survivors started voicing their complaints. Some people even began demanding that the supplies be split up evenly. 

Peyton’s face turned grim. ‘Guess I just don’t have the muscle for this,‘ he thought bitterly. ‘If Drake were the one calling the shots today, everyone would’ve kept their mouths shut.‘ 

Nina was fuming, jabbing a finger at them. “Seriously, do any of you even have any compassion? I’m pregnant! Is it really such a big deal if I want something to eat?”

“Compassion? What’s that worth? If you’re so compassionate, why don’t you just hand over everything and let us all share?” another survivor shot back. 

“Joan was pregnant too, and you were the one who sold her out when she was giving birth,” someone else called out. 

As soon as those words left their mouth, Peyton’s face went ashen. He shot a nervous thing Frank was already inside the RV and hadn’t heard a thing.

If they all ganged up on him right now, maybe they’d have a shot. But after all the crap the apocalypse had thrown at them, nobody wanted to be the one to stick their neck out. 

Just then, an earth–shaking roar from the zombies downstairs made everyone freeze in place, their hearts racing. 

“What’s going on?” someone blurted out. 

Peyton was the first to reach the corner of the second floor, and what he saw downstairs nearly made his soul jump out of his body. 

“Shit, the zombies broke in!” Peyton yelled.
