Chapter 99 Satisfying TormentNo One Gets to Walk Away Unscathed!

Sloane watched the figure outside the glass window disappear, then curled her lips into a faint smile.

Lucky for her, she’d thought fastpretending to twist her ankle in the private room earlier had given her bodyguards an excuse to bring her here.

Otherwise, how else would she have gotten to see Nova’s defeated expression?

And even betterKael was treating her so well…

Thank you, Kael,Sloane said, biting her lower lip as she reached for the ointment in his hand. I can finish applying the rest myself”

Fine,Kael replied, his tone cold as he handed the tube over without hesitation.

Sloane froze. That wasn’t the reaction she’d wanted! She’d hoped he’d insist on helping her, not agree so readily.

She took the ointment with a desolate look, her fingers brushing his briefly in a silent plea for attention.

Kael grabbed a wet wipe and began cleaning his hands, sparing her a cool glance. Apply it on time and listen to the doctor. Stop acting outdo whatever he tells you, and don’t delay your recovery. Got it?”

At his words, the warmth Sloane had felt in her chest flickered back to life.

She knew itdeep down, Kael still cared about her.

Even if it was just a little bit of pity, it was enough to keep her going.

I will.She nodded eagerly.

Kael tossed the used wipe into the trash, then fixed her with a sharp stare. The press conference is tomorrow. No more accidentsuntil then. Stay here tonight and restfocus on getting better.”

Sloane’s heart sank. The tenderness she’d felt vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, hollow feeling.

She stared blankly, confusion clouding her voice. KaelWhat press conference are you talking about?”

Kael held out a brown paper bag, cutting her off with a cold tone that left no room for further questions. This is the outfit you’ll wear tomorrow. Inside, there’s also a scriptread it carefully. When the reporters ask you questions tomorrow, you’ll say exactly what’s written there.”

She’d noticed him checking his watch repeatedly earlier; she’d foolishly thought he was keeping track of when to reapply her medication. But nohe was just in a hurry to get back to Nova.

Tears pricked her eyes. She leaned forward and grabbed his arm, her voice trembling. Kael, waitwhat press conference? What script? I don’t understand”

Kael stepped sideways, shaking her hand off as if her touch burned him. His eyes were icy, and he picked up a brown paper bag from the bed and tossed it at her. I thought I made myself clear.”

Sloane’s shoulders stiffened. She fumbled with the bag, pulling out a black trench coat and a stack of papers.

In an instant, her face drained of all color.

The words on the paper stared back at her, stark and unforgiving.

[The online controversy was entirely my doing. In pursuit of attention and clout, I deliberately sabotaged the surprise Mr. Voss had prepared for his wifeI take full responsibility for all of this.]

Sloane’s hands shook violently as she processed the words.

Then she glanced at the trench coatlong enough to cover the scrape on her leg…

So that’s why Kael had made her wear it. He’d been careful to hide her injury, afraid it would spark more trouble for Nova.

A bitter laugh escaped her.

She looked up at Kael, her eyes red and swollen with tears. What about me? If I say this at the press conference, what happens to my career?!”

He knew this would be career suicide for her. A scandal like this would ruin any chance of her ever working in the industry again! But for Nova, he didn’t care.

Sloane sobbed, her tears soaking the front of her hospital gown. But Kael showed no mercy. All he could think about was Novahow hurt she’d been when she’d said she wanted to leave him. She must have felt this same crushing despair.

Kael’s jaw was tight. He just wanted to get back to Novaevery second he spent here was another second she might be hurting alone.

Remember what I said,he warned, his voice sharp. If you don’t do this, the consequences will be far worse than you can handle.”

He called for the bodyguards, his tone leaving no room for argument. Keep an eye on her.”

Yes, Mr. Voss.”

Kael didn’t spare Sloane another glance. He turned and walked out of the room, moving so quickly it was clear he couldn’t wait to be gone.

Sloane collapsed onto the bed, her heart shattered into a million pieces.

She hugged her knees to her chest and wept, her body wracked with sobs.

Why was Kael being so cruel to her? She had pride tooshe’d once been a shining star on stage.

Did he really think he could destroy that pride just to protect Nova’s reputation?

She stared at the black trench coat and the crumpled script on the bed. Kael’s warning echoed in her earsAll the kindnesshe’d shown her suddenly felt like a sick joke. He’d never cared about herhe’d just needed her to heal fast enough to take the fall for him.

How different he was with Nova.

Sloane couldn’t take it anymore. She screamed, tearing the script to shreds and yanking the trench coat off the bed. She grabbed anything she could reachpillows, water bottles, the remoteand hurled them across the room.

When the room fell quiet again, Sloane lay on the floor, drained and disoriented.

After a long moment, she forced herself to sit up and fixed her hair in the mirror.

Then she propped up her phone, opened the camera, and pressed record.

If he wanted to destroy her, fine. Then no one would get to walk away unscathed

Nova moved down the hospital corridor like a marionette, each step slow and mechanical.

The hallway was cool and wellventilated, yet she felt suffocatedlike the air itself was thickening, making every breath a struggle.

As she reached the ward door, she paused, forcing herself to steady her emotions. She took two deep breaths, then pushed the door open.

Sure enough, Mabel was still waiting for them.

A sharp, unexpected ache tightened in Nova’s throat. She hadn’t cried when she’d seen Rsel with Sloane hadn’t let a single tear fallbut now, kink at Mabel’s bright, hopeful face, waiting eagerly for the two of them, she felt the dam inside her threaten to break

Hey, Novawhy are you alone?Mabel asked, craning her neck to look past her into the hallway. Her voice was laced with rondence

Nova walked over slowly, pressing her lips into a small smile to hide the sting in her eyes. He’s worried about you. He thought you might not be word to the hospital’s things, so he went home to get some of your stuff.”

She’d never imagined she’d one day lie to Mabel like this.

Once, Kael had been the perfect husbandand the perfect grandsoninlaw. When Mabel had been in the hospital before, he’d fussed over her more carefully than even Nova, her own granddaughter.

But that was then. Now…

A bitter laugh tugged at Nova’s lips. The memory of Kael and Sloane being intimate in that other ward flashed through her mind, and it felt like a knife twisting in her chest.

She grabbed a plate and began serving Mabel’s dinner, her voice softening. Don’t worry about himfocus on your recovery, okay?”

Mabel pretended to frown, feigning annoyance. That Kaelreally. I’m not some fragile old lady who can’t use hospital supplies. He’s spoiling me too

much.”

Even as she complained, Nova could hear the warmth in Mabel’s voiceshe was clearly touched by Kael’s thoughtfulness. Nova just smiled faintly and said nothing.

Mabel was getting older; Nova couldn’t bear to let her suffer through the pain of the truth. She’d figure out a way to arrange everything later, to get Mabel away from all this mess.

After dinner, Mabel insisted repeatedly that Nova go home, refusing to let her stay the night to keep watch.

Nova knew exactly whyMabel was trying to give her and Kael time to talk, to fix things between them.

Reluctantly, Nova agreed, only after making Mabel promise to call her if anything happened.

It worked out, anyway. She had something important to do at home.
