Chapter 14 Make Daddy Not Want You EitherÂ
The next day marked Emily’s two months in Healdsburg -and the day she could finally head back to Los Angeles.Â
Jason threw a little farewell gathering at the school to show his gratitude.Â
Emily hated to leave, but life worked that way. Every journey has its end.Â
After driving back to LA, she swung by Joy Gardens to pack her important stuff and ship it to Carter Manor.Â
She’d lived there for over two years and accumulated a lot of things. But aside from the essentials, she left everything else behind.Â
At least she had a place to go after leaving the Wilsons.Â

Early the next morning, Emily showed up at the hospital bright and early.Â

As she scrubbed in at the prep station, a surprised voice popped up beside her. “Emily?”Â
Dressed in scrubs, with a mask and cap covering all but her eyes, Emily turned to the guy next to her.Â
After a second of confusion, recognition clicked. “Aaron?”Â
Aaron Thomas‘ eyes crinkled above his mask as he smiled. “Yeah, it’s me.”Â
Emily was genuinely shocked. “You work here too?”Â
“Just filling in for a bit,” Aaron said. “You free for lunch? We could grab a bite together.”Â
Emily didn’t say no. “Sure. My treat.”Â
Aaron grinned at her. “I’ll wait for you after the surgery.”Â
At noon, Emily picked a restaurant. Aaron couldn’t handle spicy food, so she chose something lighter.Â
Once the food arrived, Emily ladled soup into Aaron’s bowl. “It’s been forever.”Â

been lately?”Â
Emily didn’t get into her personal life, keeping it simple. “Doing okay.”Â
Aaron noticed the faint tan line on her ring finger.Â
He paused before asking, “Married?”Â
Emily didn’t deny it. “Mm–hmm. And I have a sweet little daughter.”Â
Aaron smiled warmly. “Congratulations. But why didn’t you invite us to the wedding?”Â
Emily’s gaze dropped. “We didn’t have a ceremony.”Â
Seeing she didn’t want to talk about it, Aaron dropped the subject.Â
Halfway through the meal, he couldn’t help but ask, “What’s your specialty now?”Â
Emily sipped her soup slowly. “Pediatric surgery.”Â

Most of her classmates had gone on to get master’s, PhDs, or even studied abroad.Â
Meanwhile, Emily–who’d been valedictorian–was the least “successful” of the bunch.Â
Aaron had gotten his master’s and PhD right after graduation, specializing in neurosurgery. Now he was a top expert in primary tumors.Â
His reputation was all over the internet, with tons of successful surgeries under his belt.Â
With where he stood now, he was probably top tier in the medical field.Â
Back then, Emily could’ve gone down the same path with him. But she’d chosen differently.Â
And now, she learned that marriage wasn’t the safe bet she’d thought.Â
Aaron had actually asked around about Emily over the years. He knew she hadn’t continued her studies, that she’d gotten married.Â

Emily smiled, but there was a hint of self–doubt in her eyes. “I just became an attending. Still pretty entry–level.”Â
Seeing her lack of confidence, Aaron felt a twinge of sympathy. “It’s never too late to start. At least you’re still in the game. With your skills, you’ll outshine everyone sooner or later.”Â
Emily just smiled and didn’t say more.Â
When she went to pay the bill, the server told her, “The gentleman you were with already settled it.Â
Emily looked surprised, turning to Aaron. “I said I was treating. You shouldn’t have paid.”Â
Aaron was about to respond when a shocked female voice came from behind them. “Aaron?”Â
They turned to see Nancy, with Ethan and Sophia trailing right behind her.Â
Aaron only knew Nancy; he had no idea the guy and the little girl were Emily’s husband and daughter. He barely glanced at them.Â

smile.Â
Nancy noticed Emily but acted like she didn’t exist.Â
“Right? Have you eaten yet? Join us!” she invited eagerly.Â
Even though he didn’t know the connection between Emily and the other two, Aaron could tell Nancy didn’t like Emily.Â
So he stepped a little closer to Emily and smiled at Nancy. “We already finished. Don’t want to crash your meal.”Â
Nancy’s heart skipped a beat at the gesture.Â
She automatically grabbed Ethan’s arm. “Ethan, this is the amazing colleague I was telling you about.”Â
Ethan was holding Sophia’s hand, and he’d spotted Emily the second they walked in.Â
Emily looked different today–dressed nicely, with smooth skin, pink lips, and curled lashes. She seemed like a whole new person, way more attractive than he remembered.Â

Sophia saw Emily too, but she quickly looked away. She still hadn’t gotten over Emily hitting Nancy.Â
She thought Emily was wrong, but Emily wouldn’t apologize. So she wasn’t going to forgive her.Â
Though she secretly hoped Emily might try to make things right, she had her principles.Â
No apology meant no forgiveness.Â
She figured Emily would give in soon—probably any second now, hugging her and saying sorry and asking for kisses.Â
Ethan withdrew his gaze and nodded at Aaron. “Hello.”Â
“Hello,” Aaron replied politely.Â
Then he turned to Nancy. “We should catch up another time when we’re both free.”Â
Nancy couldn’t push it, so she reluctantly agreed.Â
Aaron nodded at Ethan, then held the door open for Enůly.Â

She even imagined lecturing Emily in her most grown–up voice about hitting Nancy once Emily hugged her.Â
But before her daydream could finish, Nancy waved a hand in front of her face.Â
“Sophie? You okay?” Nancy touched her forehead gently.Â
Sophia looked back instinctively, only to see Emily walking away with Aaron.Â
Emily didn’t look back once. She didn’t even glance at Sophia as she passed by.Â
Sophia stamped her foot angrily.Â
Bad Mommy! I’ll make Daddy not want you either!Â
