Chapter 22 Didn’t Wait for Them

Bright and early the next morning, Emily quietly slipped out of bed.

Ethan and Sophia were still fast asleep, so she tiptoed downstairs to freshen up.

Out of filial piety, she quickly whipped up a homemade breakfast.

Matthew, an earlyriser, watched her bustling around the kitchen with a blend of pity and affection.

After a quick breakfast with Matthew, Emily stood up and said, I’m running late for work at the hospital. Next time I come back, I’ll bring you some new pastries.”

Matthew glanced upstairs and inquired, Aren’t you going to wait for Ethan and Sophie?”

Emily had never left the Wilson Manor alone before.

Nah, I really can’t afford to be late,Emily replied,

grabbing her bag and dashing out of the hall as if worried

Matthew might stop her.

He’d managed to arrange Ethan’s marriage to Emily years ago, but now he was stumped on how to fix their relationship.

Ethan also woke up early. Since it wasn’t time for Sophia to go to school yet, he let her sleep.

Passing by the sofa, he noticed the neatlyfolded quilt, assuming Emily had gone downstairs to keep Matthew

company.

When he got downstairs, Matthew was nowhere to be found, which seemed to confirm his guess.

The maid greeted him and asked, Mr. Wilson, would you like some breakfast?”

Ethan declined, saying, No, thanks. I’m in a rush to the office.”

At the door, he turned back and told the maid, Hey, when Mrs. Wilson gets back, tell her to take Sophie to kindergarten.”

The maid, unaware that Emily had already left, nodded and said, Sure thing, Mr. Wilson.”

After Ethan left, the maid was cleaning the kitchen when she heard a loud wail from upstairs.

Dropping her cleaning tools, she rushed upstairs without even taking off her apron.

As she got closer, Sophia’s cries grew louder. Daddy!”

Pushing open the bedroom door, the maid found Sophia sitting on the bed, her hair all messy.

She was pounding the quilt, tears soaking the sheets. With her eyes red and puffy, she looked like a little abandoned girl.

The maid quickly went to the bedside and softly asked, Ms. Sophia Wilson, what’s wrong?”

Seeing the maid, Sophia bawled even louder. I want Daddy! I want Daddy!”

She kicked her legs and slapped the sheets harder.

The maid reached out to hug her. Ms. Sophia Wilson, Mr. Wilson has already left. He said Mrs. Wilson will take 3oto kindergarten. Let me help you wash up, okay? 6:21

off me.”

The maid pulled back her hand and murmured soothingly, Ms. Sophia Wilson, dry those tears. How about waiting for Mrs. Wilson to come back, and she’ll take care of your morning routine?”

Sophia averted her face, grumbling with irritation, I don’t wanna be washed up by her.”

Heaving a sigh of helplessness, the maid said, Ms. Sophia Wilson, Mrs. Wilson went out with Sir Wilson. Let me get you cleaned up and do your hair first. Once Mrs. Wilson is home, she can drive you to kindergarten. Otherwise, you’ll miss the bell!”

The maid cajoled Sophia tenderly in a childlike way.

Yet, Sophia was in no mood to listen. Leave me alone! You’re not my mom, so butt out!”

With no other solution in sight, the maid dialed Ethan’s

number.

Ethan picked up right away. What’s going on?”

with her washup and hair. Maybe you could give Mrs. Wilson a ring and have her come back sooner?”

At her words, Ethan’s voice took on a note of urgency.

Hasn’t she returned?”

Not yet.The maid shook her head.

After a brief moment of thought, Ethan said, Pass the phone to Sophie. I’ll have a word with her.”

The maid acknowledged and held the phone out to Sophia. Ms. Sophia Wilson, it’s your dad on the line.”

Despite her annoyance, Sophia snatched the phone with a huff.

DaddyHer voice was raspy from all the crying, carrying a tone of deepseated grievance.

What’s all this blubbering about?Ethan’s voice was far from gentle; it had an edge of strictness.

Sophia detected her father’s annoyance and mumbled, You took off without saying a word. I freaked out when I Woke up and you were gone.”

and let the maid fix you up. When your mom gets back, she’ll drive you to school.”

Sophia was about to protest, But I-”

Before she could finish, Ethan cut in firmly, It’s

decided.”

Cowed by her father’s authority, Sophia bit back the words on the tip of her tongue.
