Chapter 27 Upset Her MomÂ
Lucky DrawÂ
Instead of pulling up right in front of Carter Manor, Emily chose to park outside the community.Â
She had her own little plan–walking those last few hundred yards with her daughter alone.Â
Even if they didn’t say a word, it would be enough to satisfy her.Â
After today, who knew when they’d have another chance. to stroll side by side?Â
Maybe it’d never happen again in their lifetimes.Â
As these thoughts swirled in her head, Emily felt her eyes start to well up.Â
But that stretch of road, which usually seemed so long, seemed to fly by tonight.Â
It was like they were at the destination in under ten minutes.Â

Emily’s heart ached, but she bit back her emotions.Â

Before they’d even gotten close, the whole family came onÂ
over.Â
“Sophie, sweetie, come give Grandpa a hug,” Henry said, holding his arms out, all warm and hopeful.Â
But Sophia saw a stranger in front of her and didn’t like the look of him, so she ducked behind Emily.Â
Sophia’s unease didn’t go unnoticed by Henry. His face dropped slightly, but he quickly mustered a smile and said, “No hug? That’s okay. Grandpa’s got loads of great things for you. Come on, I’ll give you a look.”Â
Linda, who’d almost touched Sophia’s arm, withdrew her hand. For a brief moment, her smile faltered, yet she held it steady.Â
Hanging back, Chloe shot Emily a cryptic look.Â
In that fleeting eye–to–eye contact, the helplessness and pain in Emily’s eyes were laid bare to Chloe.Â
Being a mom herself, she totally got Sophia’s reluctance?2Â

Sophia stayed put, so Emily tugged her out from behind.Â
“Sophie, this is your grandpa, your grandma, and your aunt. Say hi,” Emily said, pointing at each relative.Â
Sophia clung to Emily, scrunching up her face at the two unfamiliar grown–ups. She pursed her lips but couldn’t get a sound out.Â
She’d seen Chloe before and knew she was her aunt, but after Molly had yelled at her, she didn’t feel like saying anything.Â
“Sophie, say something!” Emily said, her voice getting sharp as Sophia kept quiet.Â
Hearing her mom get mad, Sophia let out a big wail. “Mommy’s being mean. I’m gonna call Daddy.”Â
When Henry and Linda saw the little one crying, they were beside themselves.Â
“Emily, she’s just a baby. Why you gotta be so tough on her?” Linda scolded.Â
Henry just stared at Emily, his eyes full of a mix of pity6:22Â

pride.Â
It gave her a great sense of satisfaction to see Emily at a loss.Â
If staying here could upset Emily, she’d be more than happy to do so.Â
So, she took Linda’s hand on her own initiative and said, “Grandma, I wanna have cherries.”Â
That sweet call of “Grandma” went straight to Linda’s heart. She bent down and scooped Sophia up. “Okay, Grandma’ll take you to have some.”Â
With that, she headed into the house. But unnoticed by others, Linda’s eyes welled up with tears.Â
Leaning on Linda’s shoulder, Sophia looked at Emily, who was still standing there in a daze, and flashed a proud smile.Â
Once inside Carter Manor, Ryan and Molly were seated at the table set for dinner.Â
The delicious food on the table made Molly’s mouth 16:22Â

Moreover, her mom had told her that Sophia would comeÂ
over as a guest.Â
Even though she disliked Sophia, as a guest, Sophia had to be respected.Â
“Molly, Sophia’s here. Say hi to her,” Linda said as she placed Sophia in the seat next to Molly.Â
Annoyed as she was, Molly still managed to utter, “Hi, Sophia.”Â
In response, Sophia turned and mumbled under her breath, “Ugly chubster.”Â
The words reached Molly’s ears, and she gritted her teeth, firing back. “Spoiled brat.”Â
Just at that moment, in walked Henry. Spotting the two granddaughters seemingly in conversation, he assumed they were getting on well, and his smile widened.Â
However, it was only Emily and Chloe who were awareÂ
that the two little girls were anything but friendly towards each other.Â
