Chapter 30 None of It Mattered

Sophia bounded up the stairs and threw her arms around Nancy’s leg. Nancy, I wanna take a bath and smell as nice as you!”

Kids were like that. All the unpleasantness that had happened at Carter Manor was already ancient history to Sophia.

She’d also completely forgotten about having snapped at her mom.

Nancy stooped down, gathered Sophia into her arms, and nuzzled her forehead with a warm smile. Alright, sweetie. I’ll run you a bath right now,she cooed.

Up on the stairs, Ethan remained rooted to the spot, his eyes trained on Emily across the way.

When their gazes locked, Emily held his stare, her eyes. burning with a fierce, unwavering intensity.

Silence hung thick in the air as the tension between them

crackled.

Ethan halted in his tracks and fixed Emily with a cool, dispassionate look. What is it?he drawled.

When are you free? We need to sort this out,she said, her tone firm.

This endless limbo was taking its toll on everyone involved.

As they regarded each other from a distance, Emily’s eyes caught a telltale smear of lipstick on Ethan’s neck.

Her heart droppedshe knew exactly what it meant.

She’d been trying so hard to keep it together, but after eight long years of love, her resolve crumbled. Her eyes welled up with tears in an instant.

Furrowing his brow in obvious confusion, Ethan demanded, Sort what out?”

Biting her lip so hard that it was on the verge of bleeding, Emily managed to choke out. The divorce.”

Whipping around, Ethan asked, What’s going on?”

Nancy sauntered over, gave Emily a cursory glance, then turned to Ethan. Sophie wants you to dry her hair, she informed him.

Ethan nodded. I’ll be there in a sec,he replied.

Hurry up then. She’ll be out of the bath any minute,Nancy said over her shoulder as she made her way

towards the bedroom.

Sure thing.”

Ethan redirected his attention back to Emily, having already dismissed her earlier statement. He seemed too impatient to inquire further.

Suddenly, he remembered something. It’s almost the 15th. I’ll be back on time this month,he announced.

Emily’s failure to return to Brocade Estates on schedule for the past two months had irked Ethan.

They’d always planned on having a second child, and he was eager to get the ball rolling.

had been in vain.

He figured that if they couldn’t conceive naturally this month, they’d explore other options, like invitro fertilization.

Emily caught his drift and was about to protest when Ethan cut her off. Are you staying at Brocade Estates these days? Orhe asked.

Instead of answering, Emily squared her shoulders and declared, Ethan, I’m done with the idea of a second

child.”

To be more exact, she was done with having children with Ethan.

After the divorce, who knew what the future held? Maybe she’d find love again, or perhaps she’d spend the rest of her days alone. But that was a bridge she’d cross when

she came to it.

Ethan’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, but only for a split second. Then his features hardened into a cold mask. If you’re not having a second child, you can break the news to my mother,he said icily.

mother has a problem with it, she can call the cops, she retorted, her voice steady.

As Ethan lent an ear, his eyebrows drew together ever so slightly. Never before had he witnessed Emily in such a state, exuding an air of brashness and unyielding defiance.

On their very first attempt, they were blessed with the conception of Sophia. From that moment on, the physical closeness between them faded into the past. For the most part, he’d often caught sight of Emily with disheveled hair, tenderly holding Sophia in her arms to lull the little one to sleep or patiently feeding her.

It was only when the topic of having a second child started to surface that they began to have sex again.

Emily had always been the epitome of meekness, but at this moment, she resembled a ruffled feline, showing her claws in full force.

When the idea of a second child first came into the picture, Emily would go all out to whip up sumptuous feasts on a daily basis. Even if Ethan didn’t return to Brocade Estates for dinner, she carried on with her 16:23

month, specifically on the 15th of each month. On those particular evenings, she’d prepare an even more lavish spread.

However, it seemed that she had missed the mark somewhere.

Perhaps what Ethan craved wasn’t merely a

mouthwatering meal but a more enticing and alluring scene within the bedroom.

Their prolonged eye contact finally came to an end when Ethan let out a soft chuckle. The true intent behind

his laughter remained shrouded in mystery, and Emily couldn’t be bothered to delve into the guessing game.

It could have been a mocking sneer, a way of brushing her off as if she were engaged in a futile struggle, or maybe he thought she was just throwing a tantrum.

But none of it mattered anymore.

One thing was crystal clear: she wouldn’t be making her way back to Brocade Estates on the 15th of every month.

And she’d keep the fact that she’d once been pregnant6:23

Just then, Nancy’s voice pierced through the air. Ethan, it’s time to dry Sophie’s hair!”

On my way,Ethan responded.

He cast one last glance at Emily, then wordlessly made his way up the stairs.

Emily stood there for a while, lost in her thoughts, until Rebecca approached her and asked, Mrs. Wilson, would you like me to prepare a guest room for you?”

Snapping out of her daydream, Emily politely said, No, thank you.”

That room where she had spent countless nights with Sophia no longer felt like hers.

It now belonged to Ethan and Nancy.

After leaving Joy Gardens, Emily sat in her car for what seemed like an eternity, sobbing uncontrollably.

She acknowledged her own vulnerability, but she knew she needed to release the pentup emotions. She didn’t Want to keep her feelings bottled up inside.

she slowly start the car and head back to Carter Manor.

It was the only haven she had left.

Fortunately, the Carter family hadn’t given her the cold shoulder.
