Chapter 31 We’ll Support You Through ThisÂ
Lucky DrawÂ
Well into the early hours, Emily made her way back toÂ
Carter Manor.Â
After parking the car, a figure at the entrance caught herÂ
eye.Â
It was pacing back and forth, clearly in a state of anxiety, and soon she recognized it as Ryan.Â
Ryan also spotted Emily. He stopped in his tracks, silent, just watching as his sister approached.Â
Once she was close and he was sure she was unharmed, he started moving towards the door.Â
Suddenly, Emily’s voice broke the silence. “Ryan.”Â
Ryan halted abruptly and gruffly asked, “What is it?”Â
All the pent–up distress that Emily had been holding back came gushing out. She rushed into Ryan’s arms, sniffling. “You guys are all I’ve got. Please don’t leave me, okay?“:23Â

There was a great deal of tenderness and resignation in his words.Â
Emily smeared her tears and snot on Ryan’s pajamas that carried the fresh scent of laundry detergent.Â
Sobbing in fits and starts, she admitted, “I was so stupid. I just had to learn the hard way.”Â
Ryan couldn’t bring himself to scold her further. “Dry those tears. What doesn’t belong to you will never be yours. Forcing it will only end up hurting yourself.”Â
Emily shook her head. “I’ve come to my senses. I’m just worried about Mom and Dad,” she said.Â
“Don’t worry. I’ll talk to them,” Ryan assured.Â
Emily nodded, but the tears kept flowing.Â
“Look at that puffy face. Stop crying,” Ryan said, gently brushing away her tears with his thumb.Â
Emily managed a wobbly smile.Â
Under the grand tree in front of the house, Chloe and 6:23Â

Skipping over, Molly hugged Emily tightly. “Aunt Emily, I’ll take care of you when you’re old. I’ll be your daughter,” she declared.Â
Emily bent down and pinched Molly’s cheek. “I can makeÂ
my own money. You don’t need to worry about my old age. And I’ll save up to buy you a nice wedding gift,” she replied.Â
Molly giggled and then turned to Chloe, who had joined Ryan. “Mom, I want Aunt Emily and you to come to the activity with me. The teacher said if we do well, we’ll get a little gold star, and I can be the host of the opening program next semester,” she pleaded with hopeful eyes.Â
Leaning against Ryan, Chloe smiled sweetly and said, “Well, ask Aunt Emily if she’s up for it.”Â
Looking up at Emily with eager anticipation, Molly caught Emily’s heart.Â
Emily nuzzled Molly’s face gently and readily agreed, “Sure thing, honey. Whatever you want.”Â
Molly was ecstatic. She spun around in a giddy circle and jumped up and down, shouting with excitement, ‘I’m 6:23Â

With a smile on her face, Chloe said to Emily, “Molly has been planning for you to go for ages. Now that you’ve agreed, she’s over the moon.”Â
“Well, as long as it makes Molly happy, I’m more than willing to go with her,” Emily nodded and replied.Â
Chloe noticed that Emily seemed preoccupied, likely due to Sophia’s stubbornness. So, she steered clear of the topic of kids.Â
Instead, with a warm, reassuring smile, she motioned Emily inside, saying, “Let’s go in. There’s always a solution. We’re family, and we’ll support you through this.”Â
Emily forced a smile and replied, “Okay.”Â
The next day, Emily got to the hospital bright and early. She’d switched shifts with a coworker and was on duty at the pediatric surgery outpatient clinic.Â
It wasn’t overly crowded that day, but at nine, an adult patient walked in.Â
The patient was all wrapped up, with a mask on and a hatÂ

Emily checked the computer. No sign of a registration.Â
Just as she was about to point out the possible mix–up, the person yanked off the mask.Â
Emily was so startled that she sprang to her feet. “Vanessa! W–What happened to you?”Â
Vanessa’s face was a canvas of bruises. One eye was swollen shut.Â
Then she removed her hat, showing the blood and bald patches on her head.Â
Emily marched over to Vanessa, seething. “Was it that jerk Derek again?”Â
Without sobbing, Vanessa just gave a small nod. “Yeah.”Â
She’d had enough of disappointment, but still, she couldn’t break away.Â
Being with that monster, she counted herself lucky to be alive.Â
Fufrowing her brows, Emily spun around to gra her16:23Â

Vanessa grabbed her hand. “Just patch me up first, will you?”Â
With a sigh, Emily gave in.Â
After tending to the facial injuries, Emily was about to take off her gloves when Vanessa rolled up her sleeve.Â
Her arm was a horror show of bruises and cuts.Â
Emily bit back her rage. As she treated the wounds, she blurted out, “What’s wrong with you? After all he’s done, you’re still sticking around?”Â
Vanessa shook her head and managed a sad smile. “We’ve been together eight years. I believe he didn’t mean it. He’ll come to his senses someday.”Â
Clutching the tweezers, Emily pressed an alcohol–soaked cotton ball hard on the wound. “Your life or that guy? Which is more important?”Â
