Chapter 32 How Foolish She’d Been
Lucky Draw
Vanessa flinched in pain but clamped her lips shut to keep quiet.
Shaking her head, she assured, “It won’t repeat itself next time.”
This only served to fan the flames of Emily’s anger. She flung the tweezers into the kidney dish and retorted, “Next time, I might be seeing you in the morgue.”
“Not a chance,” Vanessa responded, though her voice lacked any real confidence.
Emily grew even more frustrated. “Vanessa, can’t you manage to live your life without a man?”
Vanessa couldn’t bring herself to meet Emily’s gaze. Head bowed, she murmured, “Emily, if I leave Derek, no one will ever want me.”
Emily was exasperated with Vanessa. However, the memory of how the Carter family and Vanessa had once 25 consoled her in a similar situation made her decide to let

Given Vanessa’s stubborn streak, even if Emily talked herself blue in the face, Vanessa probably wouldn’t listen.
Some paths had to be walked to feel the pain.
Wordlessly, Emily carried on with applying the medicine to Vanessa’s wounds.
Maybe afraid of riling Emily up further, Vanessa said in a tentative voice, “I’ll have a proper chat with Derek.”
Instead of engaging with Vanessa’s statement, Emily threw in. “All I’m saying is, if you call the cops now, be counted as intentional harm.”
That made Vanessa go quiet.
Just then, Vanessa’s phone rang.

Emily glanced at the screen and saw that it was Derek calling.
A bright smile lit up Vanessa’s face. She waved the phone at Emily and exclaimed, “See, he still cares about me.”
Enfily simply nodded, not keen on getting involved. 16:25

It was no use talking more. It was better for her to experience it on her own.
On the phone, Derek inquired, “Where are you?”
Vanessa replied, “I’m at the hospital.”

At the sound of his voice, tears welled up in her eyes, even though she’d held back during the painful injury.
Derek, seemingly oblivious to what Vanessa was saying, declared, “I’d like grilled salmon and steak for lunch.”
Tears cascading down her cheeks, Vanessa quickly said, “Sure, I’ll head to the grocery store right away and then go home to cook.”
To Vanessa, Derek’s call was like an olive branch, and his mention of food was a sign that he’d come home for
lunch.
In her mind, it was an indication that he still wanted to salvage their relationship.
Hearing Vanessa forgive Derek so readily, Emily stopped in the middle of packing up the kidney dish.

She remembered how she’d once entertained the idea of having a second child to keep Ethan, who was in love with Nancy, by her side.
How foolish she’d been!
After Vanessa left, Emily saw only three or four patients.
Still concerned about Vanessa, she sent a text:
[Remember to take your medication and keep the wound clean to prevent infection.]
However, she refrained from saying anything about Vanessa’s relationship.
After clocking out at noon, Emily decided to hit a nearby snack place near the hospital. Given her early–afternoon outpatient duties, she figured a quick post–meal stroll around the area before returning to the hospital would do the trick.
But as she sauntered past a swanky restaurant, a jaw–dropping scene greeted her through the clear glass. There sat Derek, face–to–face with a woman dressed to kill, exuding an irresistible allure.

sensuously ran her lips over the meat before taking a bite.
Meanwhile, under the table, her foot was playfully teasing
Derek’s leg.
Unable to keep his cool, Derek grabbed her delicate ankle. The woman leaned forward, and her cleavage was on full display, the skin almost glowing.
They were so shameless that they didn’t even bother to draw the curtains.
What really got Emily’s blood boiling was that Derek had told Vanessa he’d be home for lunch.
Poor Vanessa was probably sitting at home, waiting for him like a lovesick puppy.
Emily snapped a photo and then gave Vanessa a ring.
“Emily, what’s going on?” Vanessa answered in a jiffy, and her voice sounded off.
Emily asked, “Has Derek made it back?”
Nah, he said there was some work emergency and he’§1:25

Emily rolled her eyes.
Work emergency? So this is his so–called “work emergency“?
Feeling bad for Vanessa, Emily hung up and stormed into
the restaurant.
A waiter tried to stop her to ask who she was looking for, but Emily was on a mission, striding purposefully.
Derek was too engrossed in his chat with the vixen to notice Emily coming.
Before he knew it, a glass of red wine was splashed in his face, followed by a stinging slap.
Emily had put so much strength into the slap that her hand was still tingling.
The woman let out a couple of shrill screams and scurried into the corner.
Once Derek got his wits back, he jumped to his feet and angrily jabbed a finger at Emily. “What the hell do you think you’re doing, Emily?”
