Chapter 34 Find Someone ElseÂ
His voice remained steady, as casual as discussing dinner.Â
With that one simple statement, he wiped out Emily’s years of hard work in a heartbeat.Â
Rather than getting angry, she forced a smile, yet it quickly dissolved into tears.Â
Fed up, Emily spun around to face Ethan. “Come on, tell me what else you’re after,” she demanded.Â
She’d already relinquished Joy Gardens, Sophia, and her marriage.Â
Ethan just gazed at Emily quietly. His composure clashed sharply with her boiling rage.Â
It was clear they were on different wavelengths, and even in this stand–off, he was as cool as a cucumber.Â
“Since Sophie started kindergarten, you haven’t taken her to school even once,” Ethan stated matter–of–factly.Â
Emily bit her lip, not keen on letting Ethan catch aÂ

“But you’re her mom,” Ethan shot back.Â
Emily was stunned. Only when she saw the dead–serious look on Ethan’s face did she realize he wasn’t joking.Â
“So now you remember I’m Sophia’s mom? Do you really see me as her mom in your eyes?”Â
Emily stared intently at Ethan, itching to hear his answer.Â
Predictably, he dodged the question. “I don’t get what’s wrong with you. You’re Sophie’s mom, so you gotta take care of your kid,” he said.Â
Money was never a problem for the Wilson family. Ethan could easily support Sophia on his own, but he didn’t want Sophia to grow up without a mother’s affection.Â
Lately, Emily had been acting so out of character that she’d skipped Sophia’s kindergarten events.Â
Emily didn’t contest Ethan’s words. Instead, she agreed right away. “Sophie is my flesh and blood. I won’t back out of my responsibilities,” she declared.Â
After a brief moment, she added, “If that’s all, I’m getting5Â

Emily seemed in a hurry to leave, nothing like the woman who used to wait for Ethan to come home with bated breath.Â
Ethan was a bit taken aback, but he managed to call out to Emily as she reached for the door, “There’s a kindergarten event during the festival in a few days. Go with Sophie? I’ve got a crucial meeting,” he asked.Â
Emily paused for a second. Remembering her promise to Molly, she shook her head. “I’m tied up. Find someone else,” she said firmly.Â
With that, she opened the door and stepped out.Â
Without hesitation, she flagged down a taxi and gave theÂ
address of Carter Manor.Â
Sitting in the car, Ethan narrowed his eyes as he watched the taxi’s taillights fade away.Â
How odd.Â
The Emily who used to love her daughter more than anything had changed so drastically.Â

Well, maybe it was just his overthinking.Â
Out of the blue, Ethan’s phone started ringing. It was a call from Nancy.Â
“Ethan, did you sort things out with Ms. Carter?”Â
The moment the kindergarten event plan was released, Sophia wasted no time sharing her wish with Nancy: she hoped Nancy would join her at the event.Â
However, Nancy was swamped with her studies and piano recitals. There was simply no way she could spare the time to accompany Sophia to school.Â
Ethan gave a curt response. “She’s tied up that day.”Â
Upon hearing this, Nancy murmured under her breath, “Hmm, maybe I should ditch my classes and go with Sophie?”Â
It was just a half–hearted suggestion, not a genuine offer.Â
After all, kindergarten events were a real drag. Nancy’s heart belonged to the stage, where she could bask in the Adoration of the crowd.Â

dismay, he simply nodded and said, “Sounds good.”Â
Nancy was crestfallen but forced a smile and said, “Alright, I’ll be there for Sophie.”Â
Once Emily powered on her phone, she was greeted by a flurry of missed calls.Â
Ryan, Chloe, Shirley, and Aaron had all tried to reach her.Â
She had an afternoon outpatient shift. Disappearing without a word was bound to land her in hot water at the hospital.Â
She’d already braced herself for the worst, perhaps even the sack.Â
While in the taxi, Emily decided to call Shirley back.Â
“Ms. Dolton.”Â
“Emily? What’s going on?” Shirley’s voice sounded as calm as ever.Â
Emily was caught off guard and struggled to find the right 567ds.Â

“What?” Emily was utterly confused.Â
Shirley sounded apologetic. “I’m such a lousy leader. You were sick, and I still had you on the outpatient schedule. I’m giving you three days off. Just relax at home.”Â
Emily was utterly perplexed by Shirley’s words and could only assume it was a subtle way of hinting at something. “Got it,” Emily murmured softly.Â
She figured that although it was presented as a vacation, it was likely a veiled dismissal.Â
After all, she’d skipped work without a valid reason, so it seemed only fair that she faced such consequences.Â
Just as she was about to end the call, Shirley added, “Don’t forget to come back to work in three days.”Â
“Really?” Emily was so shocked that she wondered if she’d misheard.Â
There was a lot of background noise on Shirley’s end. She was probably at a party.Â
Emily, I’ve got to go. I’m in the middle of a drin. CallieÂ
