The back rows were all occupied, leaving only the front ones available. Spotting Aaron, Nancy wasted no time making her way over. But as she settled in, the sight of Emily made her stop short, her eyes clouded with bewilderment. 

Ethan, too, caught sight of Emily sitting beside Aaron. Andrew’s words immediately popped into his head. 

Could it be true that Emily was having an affair? 

Just then, Nancy gave his sleeve a little tug. “Ethan, take a seat,” she murmured. 

Looking up at Oliver’s less–than–happy face, Ethan sat down. 

Oliver was seething, yet he held his temper in check and 

carried on with the class. 

Nancy took the seat beside Aaron, while Emily and Ethan sat on opposite sides.

Aaron and Nancy weren’t on good terms. After learning that Ethan was Emily’s husband, he developed an

concentration. 

Emily’s attention was firmly fixed on Oliver. Wherever he moved, her gaze followed.

A wry smile spread across Emily’s face before she went back to her note–taking.

The classroom instantly buzzed with activity. 

Since Ethan wasn’t a med student, Nancy promptly turned to Aaron. “Aaron, let’s discuss this together.” 

But Aaron brushed her off and turned to Emily for a chat. 

Nancy was left stunned, the smile vanishing from her 

face. 

Emily also noticed Nancy’s attempt to team up with Aaron, yet Aaron chose her. She felt a surge of gratitude. 

Sure, an affair involved two people, but Nancy was no innocent bystander. 

Knowing Ethan had a wife and daughter, she still stepped in. Emily had never thought well of her.

Nancy shook her head, her eyes welling up with tears. 

In response, Ethan reached under the table and took her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze, as if to say, “It’s okay.” 

Just then, Oliver rapped on the table. 

“Time’s up,” he announced, and the classroom fell silent in an instant. 

Oliver cast a sweeping glance around the classroom before his eyes finally landed on Emily. “You seem new here. Come on, stand up and give it a try,” he said. 

The moment she was called on, Emily’s heart leaped into her throat. 

She hadn’t even gone for a master’s degree, and here she was sitting in a doctoral students‘ class. It was no wonder her nerves were on edge. 

But with Oliver’s powerful presence looming over her, Emily managed to get to her feet.

Upon hearing that, Oliver started rummaging through the attendance list, but he couldn’t find the name anywhere. 

“There’s not a student with the last name Carter in this 

class,” he mumbled to himself. 

Just then, Aaron spoke up, “Professor Jones, Emily tagged along with me. She’s like a super–fan of yours and has been itching to sit in on one of your classes.” 

Oliver snapped the attendance list shut and gave Aaron a look that clearly showed his displeasure. “This is a classroom, not some free–for–all where you can bring in just anyone,” he grumbled. 

His words were a thinly–veiled reproach not just to Aaron but also to Nancy. 

After all, this was a serious and specialized course, not a place where just anyone could be casually brought in. 

Oliver was obviously irritated. Aaron, being perceptive, realized that it was not the time to say another word. 5/7

When Emily finished her spiel, the classroom erupted in a round of applause. 

Nancy didn’t join in the applause. Instead, she sat there, gaping at Emily in disbelief. 

There were several points in Emily’s answer that had completely escaped Nancy’s notice. 

Ethan was also blown away by Emily’s professional knowledge.
