Chapter 39 No Less Talented Than Anyone ElseÂ
Oliver hardly ever used the word “please” with others. But right after Emily wrapped up answering the question, he offered a gentle “Please have a seat“.Â
Remarkably, he didn’t bat an eye at the fact that she wasn’t his student..Â
For Oliver, talent was the key, and he had an eye for it.Â
Emily’s moment of glory set Nancy’s blood boiling. It was more than just a twinge of envy; it was pure, unadulterated jealousy.Â
Nancy had sweated bullets to become Oliver’s doctoral student. Yet, all she got were scoldings rather than praises.Â
But there was Emily, a newbie in the class, getting all the kudos.Â
The more Nancy ruminated on it, the more she felt like herhead was about to explode.Â

done her master’s? She didn’t stand a chance againstÂ
Nancy.Â
What was more, one compliment didn’t mean squat.Â
And it was obvious to Nancy that Aaron must have fed Emily the answers during their chat.Â
There was no way a four–year housewife could have such sharp academic knowledge.Â
With these thoughts, Nancy managed to soothe her ruffled feathers.Â
Once the class was over, Emily and Aaron waited until Oliver left before making their exit.Â
They were just downstairs when a voice called out, “Emily, Aaron.”Â
Turning around, they were greeted by the sight of Oliver, his hair as white as snow.Â
Time had left its marks on his face, but the fire in his eyes for medicine burned as bright as ever.Â

still at the helm, a true warrior for medicine.Â
And for the love of his profession, he’d never tied the knot or had kids.Â
“Professor Jones,” both Emily and Aaron chimed in, their voices filled with respect.Â
Oliver strolled up to Emily, a wide smile on his face. “So, where are you making your mark?” he inquired.Â
“Professor Jones, I’m not really in a big–shot position,” she mumbled, blushing a little.Â
Oliver gave her an encouraging smile and probed further, “Who’s your supervisor then?”Â
Emily dropped her gaze, a bit embarrassed. “I didn’t go for a doctorate. I’m working now,” she admitted.Â
“I see. Which department are you in at the hospital?” Oliver let out a soft sigh.Â
“Pediatric surgery,” Emily replied.Â
BAR… This department surely presents a great deal of 6:27Â

Emily flashed a smile and responded, “Well, it’s okay once you get used to it.”Â
Even though she was engaged in pediatric surgery, the opportunities for her to step onto the operating table were still extremely scarce.Â
Had she not taken a detour by getting married back then, chances were she would have become a seasoned doctorÂ
like Aaron by now, having performed countless surgeries.Â
However, it was not a definite outcome. Aaron had reached an incredibly high–end level in his field. He only took on the most complex surgical cases, particularly brain surgeries.Â
It was highly probable that she’d never be able to match his achievements in her lifetime.Â
Oliver, clutching his thermos cup, still had a radiant smile on his face. “So, any plans to pursue a doctoral degree?” he inquired.Â
At this question, Emily’s face brightened with excitement. “I…” She was on the verge of saying “Yes“. 4/7Â

to pick your brain on. Is it a good time, Professor Jones?”Â
Oliver turned in the direction of the voice and spotted Ethan and Nancy. He furrowed his brows slightly. Despite his irritation, he managed to reply, “Sure.”Â
The response came out rather tersely, and it was evident that his mood had soured.Â
Nancy then said, “Professor Jones, could we have a private chat?”Â
Oliver gave a nod. “Alright.”Â
Saying that, he made his way towards Nancy.Â
Aaron grew visibly anxious at the sight. Just as he was about to hail Oliver, Emily grabbed hold of his arm. “Aaron, let it be. I haven’t even completed my master’s. There’s no way I can get into Professor Jones‘ doctoral program. Just drop it,” she pleaded.Â
“Emily, you’re no less talented than anyone else. You just took a wrong turn back then. Better late than never, you know? If you didn’t start back then, now’s the next best shot. Professor Jones thinks so highly of you. Are you 6:27Â

Emily hung her head, at a loss for words to respond to Aaron, who held her arm firmly and continued to try and convince her.Â
Ethan didn’t accompany Nancy. Instead, he stood a short distance away, waiting for her.Â
While replying to work–related messages, he caught sight of the interaction between Emily and Aaron.Â
It was obvious that Aaron was extremely worked up, and Emily looked on the verge of tears.Â
Ethan observed silently, and Andrew’s words started to reverberate in his mind.Â
If there was truly nothing between them, then why was Aaron holding Emily’s hand and standing so close to her?Â
It looked as if they were about to embrace or share a kiss at any moment.Â
Here, Emily was oblivious to Ethan standing behind her. She said to Aaron with gratitude, “I know you went out of your way to bring me to today’s class, and I’m really Hateful. But if I were to start over now, I’m not sure if I’mÂ

Pursuing a master’s and then a doctorate had always been a lingering regret for Emily. But the thought of starting anew filled her with trepidation.Â
Aaron didn’t push her. He reached out and brushed away the tears from her face. “It doesn’t matter if you don’t go for a doctorate. You’ll always be uniquely you.”Â
Emily nodded. “Okay. Let’s leave.”Â
“Sure.”Â
Just as they were about to depart, Ethan, almost involuntarily, called out, “Emily.”Â
He had been observing them for some time, and he couldn’t quite put a finger on the complex emotions swirling within him.Â
