Chapter 40 Sophia’s UpbringingÂ
Emily, his wife, had been getting chummy with anotherÂ
guy.Â
It was not like he could pretend it didn’t bother him at all.Â
But he wasn’t about to go all Hulk and take a swing at Aaron.Â
Still, Ethan called out to Emily, though he wasn’t sure what he’d say.Â
At the sound of Ethan’s voice, Emily halted. She gave Aaron a look, then said, “You head back. I need to chatÂ
with Ethan.”Â
Aaron had no clue what this chat was about, but since they were married, he didn’t push it and agreed.Â
Once Aaron was out of sight, Emily sauntered over to Ethan. “Let’s talk about Sophie’s upbringing,” she said.Â
Ethan frowned, clearly puzzled. “What?”Â
Just from his reaction, Emily knew the score.Â

dad, so step up.”Â
Ethan, in the dark about Sophia’s misdeeds, thought Emily was throwing shade at him. “And you’re her mom. What about your part?” he shot back.Â
Not in the mood for a fight, Emily shrugged. “If she sawÂ
me as her mom, I wouldn’t be bugging you.”Â
Ethan still remembered Emily skipping Sophia’s kindergarten event.Â
“Ever thought about why she acts that way toward you? Look in the mirror,” he said.Â
“I’ve done my best with Sophie.” Emily stood firm.Â
Ethan wasn’t buying it. “If you think she’s off–track, then fix it. In my book, Sophie’s a good kid.”Â
That got Emily’s hackles up. “Ethan, you’re being stubborn. If you don’t teach her now, the world will, and it won’t be pretty.”Â
Ethan crossed his arms. “My daughter, my rules.”Â

“Am I?” Ethan scoffed.Â
“Ask Nancy what your ‘good‘ daughter does at school,” Emily snapped, then turned on her heel and walked off.Â
Arguing with him was a waste of breath.Â
Emily’s know–it–all attitude rubbed Ethan the wrong way.Â
As a mom, she skipped the kindergarten events and was now passing the buck on raising the kid.Â
Ethan was getting more and more peeved with her.Â
She used to be all over Sophia’s care, but now she seemed to want nothing to do with it.Â
“Ethan.” A soft voice came from behind as his temperÂ
flared.Â
It was Nancy, whose gentle voice took the edge off hisÂ
anger.Â
“All good?” Ethan asked, his eyes softening as he looked at Nancy.Â

Ethan didn’t want to go into it. “It’s nothing. Time to get Sophie.”Â
Once in the car, Ethan sat there, hands on the wheel, but didn’t turn the key.Â
In the passenger seat, Nancy spotted that Ethan hadn’t started the car yet. She couldn’t resist speaking up, “Ethan, seems you’ve got something weighing on your mind.”Â
The words Emily had said were still lingering in Ethan’s mind, leaving him with a persistent sense of doubt. So, he brought up the question, “Nancy, has Sophia gotten into any trouble at school?”Â
Nancy was in charge of everything related to Sophia’s school life.Â
Given that Emily had claimed Sophia had acted up at school, it was only logical for Ethan to ask Nancy.Â
Nancy hesitated briefly before flashing a smile. “Sophia’s an angel. There’s no way she’d cause any ruckus,” sheÂ
said. 4/6Â

With that, he started the engine, and the car began toÂ
move.Â
As the car pulled out, a hint of guilt flitted across Nancy’s face.Â
There were certain things she’d rather keep to herself. She worried that if Ethan knew, he’d think she hadn’t been doing a good job taking care of Sophia.Â
So, she decided to keep it under wraps to avoid disappointing him.Â
It wasn’t long before they reached the kindergarten.Â
Just as the school day was about to end, Nancy’s phone rang. It was a call from the school.Â
“What? A meeting right now?” she exclaimed.Â
Nancy tried to wriggle out of it, but it was a lost cause.Â
“Okay, I’ll head over right away,” she sighed.Â
Ethan told Nancy to prioritize her studies and arranged for a driver to take her.Â

In the car, Sophia was a bundle of nerves. She felt bad about what she’d done at school and uneasy about how she’d abruptly left Carter Manor.Â
All these jumbled emotions made her feel grumpy for noÂ
apparent reason.Â
“Daddy,” she called out.Â
“Yeah?” he responded.Â
“Has Mommy called you? Or have you seen her?”Â
