Chapter 42 Aaron Was FiredÂ
Lucky DrawÂ
There was a time when Ethan’s anger would have been aÂ
huge deal to Emily.Â
But now, it barely registered.Â
So what if he was steamed?Â
The angrier he got, the calmer she became.Â
“I used to be all at sea when it came to what matteredÂ
most, but not anymore,” she declared.Â
Fearing Ethan might get the wrong idea, she quickly added, “So I’m heading back to take care of my family.”Â
Ethan clenched the phone tightly. The warm orange glow of the streetlights filtered through the car window, casting a shadow over his furious face.Â
Emily could tell from his heavy breathing that he was seething, but she couldn’t care less. “If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up,” she said flatly.Â
suddenly, Ethan growled menacingly through grittedÂ

With that, she ended the call before he could say another word.Â
At the sight of the darkened phone screen, Ethan’s anger boiled over.Â
But with Sophia sitting beside him, he forced himself to keep it in check.Â
“Daddy, did Mommy hang up?” Sophia’s eyes were filled with tears, making her look incredibly pitiful.Â
“Yeah,” Ethan murmured.Â
Sophia hung her head, her voice quivering with sadness. “Mommy doesn’t want me anymore.”Â
Ethan pulled her into a hug and whispered soothingly, “Don’t be silly. She loves you to bits. She’d never abandonÂ
you.”Â
The more Sophia thought about all the love Emily had shown her, the more terrified she became.Â
She realized that the harsh words she’d said at Carter Mahor must have really hurt Emily.Â

scram?Â
But Ethan was right. She was Emily’s daughter, and Emily wouldn’t just turn her back on her.Â
Ethan had no clue what had gotten into Emily, but he didn’t want to see Sophia upset. So he decided to have a serious talk with Emily on the 15th of this month.Â
Even though she’d said she didn’t want a second child, Ethan was convinced she wouldn’t go against the wishes of the Wilson family.Â

The next day, as Emily walked into the department, she caught snippets of a conversation among the nurses atÂ
the station.Â
“Did you hear? The new doctor got the boot.”Â
“Fired? That brilliant guy? He’s only been here for three days!”Â
“Looks like he rubbed someone important the wrong way. The dean gave him the sack personally.”Â

me as the arrogant type.”Â
“Who knows? There’s usually a lot more to these things than meets the eye.”Â
“You’re right. With his amazing credentials, he could have landed a job anywhere. And he was the only one who could handle those super–complex brain surgeries. A real whiz in the medical field. You’d think the hospital leaders would be falling over themselves to keep him. But fired after just three days? There’s definitely something off about this.”Â
Furrowing her brows, Emily was certain they were talking about Aaron.Â
He was such a mild–mannered guy; it was hard to imagine him deliberately causing trouble.Â
So what on earth happened?Â
After changing into her white coat, Emily made her way to the stairwell and gave Aaron a call.Â
He picked up right away, sounding as laid–back as ever. Emily, what’s wrong?”Â

Aaron could tell she was hesitant. “You’re wondering why I got fired, aren’t you?”Â
“Yeah,” she replied.Â
It sounded like Aaron was chowing down on something. He brushed it off with a casual wave of his hand. “Seriously, it’s nothing to lose sleep over. Don’t worry about me.”Â
But Emily couldn’t shake her unease. “But…”Â
In a tight–knit medical community like theirs, news traveled at the speed of light.Â
If word got out that Aaron was axed under a cloud, his so–called colleagues, the ones who’d always been green–eyed with envy, would pounce on the chance to give him the cold shoulder.Â
Aaron caught on to Emily’s concerns but remained unfazed. With a reassuring smile, he shrugged it off. “Trust me, it won’t be long before someone comes knocking on my door, begging me to come back.”Â
бéspite his confidence, Emily’s brow remained Furrowed.8Â

Rather than offering an explanation, Aaron just grinned. “Emily, stop worrying too much. This is nothing.”Â
Seeing his nonchalant attitude, Emily started to relax aÂ
bit.Â
She said, “Yeah, you’re Aaron! You’re the go–to guy for those mind–boggling cranial surgeries. Them firing you? That’s stupid–they need you.”Â
Aaron chuckled, replying, “No big deal. I could use a break anyway.”Â
With that, Emily finally let out a sigh of relief. After a bit of small talk, she hung up.Â
Instead of heading straight back to her department, she plopped down on the stairwell steps for a bit.Â
There was definitely more to Aaron’s sudden firing than met the eye.Â
But what that something was, she hadn’t a clue, and it was likely Aaron was in the dark, too.Â
