The young soldier stared longingly at the table loaded with mouthwatering food, nearly drooling.Â
He’d only joined the army two months before the apocalypse broke out, so his self–control was nothing compared to the seasoned soldiers.Â
Chloe said, “I have a pair of twin siblings who got separated from me. They should be at Bluehaven Base.”Â
She glanced over and offered, “Let me treat you all to a good meal. When we get to Bluehaven Base, could you help me ask around for them?”Â
“No problem,” Peyton said.Â
He was just a regular soldier, not some robot. After days of choking down nothing but dry rations, he was seriously craving some real food.Â
Chloe shot Frank a look, and he quickly fetched another big pot from the base vehicle.Â
Liana and the others lugged over several buckets, most of them stuffed with jumbo shrimp, crab legs, and crawfish, plus red potatoes and corn on the cob.Â
Of course, there was no shortage of Cajun spices and melted butter.Â
The soldiers stared, utterly dumbfounded.Â
They couldn’t believe that, in the midst of this apocalypse, someone could actually stockpile so much food.Â
And the craziest part? All this was just for one meal.Â
Peyton couldn’t help but swallow hard. He asked, “Is this all for us?”Â
“Who else?” Chloe shrugged.Â
She ordered Mindy to light the charcoal.Â
The soldiers gave them a deep military salute.Â
Then they all gathered around and dug in.Â
The sheer variety and abundance of food laid out before them nearly brought them to tears.Â
They hadn’t tasted a real meal in so long that it almost felt unreal to finally eat like this.Â
Soon, the delicious smell of food filled the whole house and drifted far, carried on the wind.Â
A few of the soldiers seemed troubled, glancing at Chloe as if they wanted to say something but couldn’t get the words out.Â
“If you’ve got something to say, just spit it out,” Chloe said.Â
Finally, the young soldier stepped up and asked, “Is it okay if we vite someone else to join us for the meal?”Â
“It’s all yours. Do whatever you want,” Chloe replied.Â
The young soldier dashed out, grinning from ear to ear, and so came back with a whole crowd in tow.Â
He was helping an elderly man along, and trailing behind them were dozens of refugees.Â

The young soldier scratched his head, looking a little embarrass.Â
“They wouldn’t take no for an answer,” he said.Â

He’d only meant to bring the old man, but the refugees had swamed him, refusing to let him leave without them.Â
The refugees‘ eyes practically sparkled when they saw the feast Chloe had laid out, looking just like a pack of hungry wolves. who’d finally spotted some meat.Â
They rushed in all at once, like they were about to grab everything in sight.Â
Suddenly, an ice wall sprang up out of nowhere, cutting the refugees off and keeping them at bay.Â
The guy leading the charge looked like he used to be pretty strong, probably younger than most, but after the apocalypse hit and food got scarce, he was sickly and underfed.Â
He slammed right into the ice wall, then glared at Chloe, baring his teeth in frustration.Â
He shouted, “You demon woman! What gives you the right to us your powers to block us? If you’re with the army, you’re supposed to take us in and feed us!”Â
The refugees behind him started shouting too, their eyes glued to the mountain of food on the table, looking like a pack of starving wolves.Â
Before long, they scrambled around the ice wall, hands outstretched, desperate to snatch whatever food they could.Â
“We’re the ones who kept you fed! All those taxes we paid, did you just feed them to the dogs?” one of them shouted angrily.Â
“Yeah, why do you soldiers get to feast while we’re starving? It’s totally unfair!” another yelled.Â
“That’s right, let’s just grab their food!” someone else shouted.Â
The refugees rushed in at once, and the soldiers scrambled to hold them back. But after being cold and hungry for so long, the refugees exploded with a burst of primal, desperate energy, as wild beasts unleashed.Â
Peyton fired a few warning shots into the air. He shouted, “Everyone, listen up! Come over here and eat with us. Don’t bother them!”Â
But the starving refugees completely ignored his order. The moment they saw the feast at Chloe’s table, of course, they were going to fight for a spot there. No way they’d settle for anything less.Â
Besides, after hanging around these soldiers for a while, the refuees realized that the most the soldiers would ever do was fire a few warning shots into the air. They never really did anything to hurt anyone.Â
After a while, nobody was scared of the soldiers anymore,Â
But Chloe wasn’t one of the soldiers.Â
She gave the leader a cold look. Suddenly, a crossbow materialized in her hand. Without hesitation, she aimed at him and let the bolt fly.Â
The guy had just grabbed a chunk of cooked meat from the table, but before he could even take a bite, he collapsed instantly.Â
The bolt went right through his skull.Â
“Oh my god, she’s killing people! She’s killing people!” the refugees screamed in terror.Â
“The army’s killing civilians!” someone else shouted.Â

But his words were cut off mid–sentence because another bolt shot through his temple, silencing him instantly.Â
That was enough to shut everyone up. The refugees stared at Coe, fear etched on their faces.Â
Peyton quickly spoke up. “Come over here and eat with us.”Â

Then he gave Chloe a stern look. He said, “Listen, kid, it’s the apocalypse. Now more than ever, people need to stick together.”Â
Chloe let out a cold laugh. She shot back, “They were the ones who tried to snatch my stuff first. So, what, your idea of ‘sticking together‘ is me just handing over everything I have to these refugees?”Â
Peyton choked for a second, then stuck out his neck and argued. But that wasn’t enough to get them killed.”Â
Frank snorted, pointing behind Peyton. He said, “Seriously, what the hell does that have to do with us?”Â
Peyton was about to keep talking, but the refugees just pushed the soldiers out of the way and cleaned out their table in seconds, leaving nothing behind.Â
Emily burst out laughing. She sneered, “See? All that justice and indness, and now you’re left with nothing to eat!”Â
Even Molly couldn’t help but roll her eyes. The soldiers were good guys, sure, but way too stuck in their ways for the apocalypse.Â
Peyton looked uncomfortable, but as a soldier, he just couldn’t stand by and watch the refugees starve.Â
In the end, the soldiers didn’t get a single bite. The refugees rushed in, grabbed every last bit of food, and still had the nerve to complain.Â
“You guys didn’t bring more supplies? This tiny bit isn’t even enough to fill the gap between our teeth,” one of them scoffed.Â
Then they turned their greedy eyes on Chloe. One of them shouted, “Hey, don’t you have any heart? Are you really just going to stand there and let us starve?”Â
An old woman shoved her way through the crowd. With her sharp, triangular eyes, high cheekbones, and thin lips, one could tell right away she was a force to be reckoned with.Â
She jabbed a finger at Chloe’s group, practically shaking with rage. She said, “We’re civilians. Soldiers like you, living off the government, should be keeping us safe and making sure we have food!Â
“Kids these days, no respect at all! Haven’t you ever heard of respecting your elders and caring for the young?”Â
Chloe cracked her neck, shooting a dangerous glare as she slowly lifted her crossbow.Â
Peyton quickly stepped in to defuse the situation. He said, “Lady they’re not soldiers. They don’t owe you any protection.”Â
He knew the refugees were out of line, but Chloe straight–up killing someone was a bit much. Even he couldn’t look at her the same way anymore.Â
The old woman started cursing out Peyton, her words sharp and vicious.Â
She barked, “Well then, what are you waiting for? Go snatch the stuff and hand it over to us!”Â
Her commanding tone was so disgusting that it made everyone ck to their stomach.Â
“That’s right, you really are a bunch of worthless good–for–nothings! Can’t even control a few murderers, another refugee jeered.Â
