When it came to scrounging up food, the old woman got even more cutting and mean–spirited.
She shot back, “Isn’t it your job to feed us?”

She pointed straight at Chloe’s table piled high with mouthwatering dishes, rolling her eyes to the ceiling like she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
She snapped, “Soldiers? What a joke! You sneak off and cook up your own feasts, while all we get is slop, not even fit for animals.”
Peyton had already explained over and over that Chloe and her crew weren’t soldiers, but the old woman just refused to listen.
She kept calling Chloe heartless, making the soldiers standing nearby look awkward and embarrassed.
Almost all the supplies they’d scavenged these past few days had been given out for free, and now the refugees had grabbed every last bit of their food.
They hadn’t even gotten a single bite themselves, yet all they got in return were complaints.
The refugees knew the soldiers would never open fire on regular folks. Emboldened, they held all the cards and asked for trouble by daring the soldiers to do something about it.
Back when the soldiers first handed out supplies, everyone was excited and grateful. But now? They acted as if it were their birthright, growing greedier by the day.
To them, that was just what soldiers were for: handing out whatever they needed.
Chloe shot Peyton a strange, mischievous smile.
She thought, ‘A little kindness gets you thanks, but give too much, and people just start resenting you. Spoiling them will only make things worse.”
Chloe said to Peyton, “You are the squad leader, right? We’re showing you and your soldiers some respect, but if these refugees keep causing trouble, don’t blame us if we stop playing nice.”
Since the soldiers were from Bluehaven Base, she’d probably need their help tracking someone down later.
Peyton barked at the refugees, “Get the hell back!”
The old woman puffed out her chest, pointing at her own head. She said, “I’m starving anyway. Go on, shoot me if you’ve got the guts!”
She kept pointing at her own head and got right up in Peyton’s face.
Peyton had clearly never dealt with someone this crazy and loud before. His face turned bright red with anger, but he was totally stumped.
“You… you…” he stammered, unable to get the words out.
Chloe rolled her eyes, fed up with the whole scene. She glanced over at the mutant cheetah, whose stomach was already growling for food.
“Kitty, if they keep interrupting my meal, you can have them alls a special dinner treat,” Chloe said quietly, but somehow everyone heard her loud and clear.

Everyone stared in terror at the mutant cheetah by the door, now shrunken down, their bodies trembling like leaves.
They thought, How did we forget about that monster?
The delicious aroma in the air had been so overpowering that everyone just barged in, completely forgetting about the danger. But now, locking eyes with those razor–sharp pupils of the cheetah, their knees went weak with fear.
Panic broke out among the refugees as they scrambled backward shoving each other until the soldiers ended up right at the front of the crowd.
One of the refugees yelled, “You’re soldiers! It’s your job to protect us regular folks!”
The old woman jabbed Peyton with her elbow and said, ‘Just kill that thing already! That way we’ll finally get some real
meat!”
Chloe’s jaw dropped in disbelief.
She thought, ‘Is this old bat actually crazy?
‘She expects soldiers with zero abilities to take down a mutant cheetah? They’d be dead before they even got close.
Peyton just gave a helpless smile. There was no way he could do that.
The mutant cheetah shot the refugees a look of utter disdain, then turned away and let out a menacing growl at Chloe. baring its fangs.
It seemed like saying, “These sly humans, trying to feed me those filthy pests. Ugh.
Picking up on the cheetah’s obvious disgust, Chloe smirked and said, “My teammates are all scared stiff. These refugees are really freaking us out. What are we supposed to do?”
She raised her hand and clenched it into a fist. She added, “How am I supposed to treat your master later? My hands are shaking so bad I can barely keep them steady.”
The mutant cheetah shot up like a bolt of lightning. One second it was there; the next, it had the old woman pinned to the ground.
It bared its blood–red maw and roared right in her face, spittle dripping onto her cheeks.
The old woman fainted dead away from sheer terror. Out here in the cold, if no one hauled her inside and dumped her under some blankets, she’d be frozen solid in no time.
The mutant cheetah scuffed its paw against the floor in disgust, then scanned the crowd with a killer glare.
The sheer terror of coming face–to–face with death finally reminded the refugees just how close they were to disaster, fear took over in an instant.
The mutant cheetah gave Chloe a fed–up look as if saying, “These pesky bugs? I wouldn’t eat them
It gazed hungrily toward Chloe’s table.
Chloe nodded, satisfied. She said, “Nice work. Here’s your treat.”
With a casual toss, she threw out a heap of raw chicken, duck, a fish, still dripping with fresh blood, right in front of the mutant cheetah.
The mutant cheetah let out a happy roar and pounced on the pi

Chapter 112
The young guy quickly waved his hands, looking flustered. He said, “No, no, that’s not what I meant at all!”
Seeing the kid stumble over his words, Steven patted his hand, giving him a kind, reassuring smile.
Steven said, “Kid, I’m really not hungry. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine ll we get to the base.”
