After thinking it over for a moment, Aurelia told her lawyer to stick to their original legal strategy, not missing a single detail. ‘Vanessa had better be innocent in this matter, Aurelia thought to herself.Â
On Saturday, Aurelia flew to Glenwick City to attend Zofia’s memorial service.Â
It had only been a little over a month since she had last seen Darren, but he looked much thinner. There were also new lines on his face that hadn’t been there before. Even his hair had a few faint gray hairs that were not easy to missÂ
The memorial service was solemn and hushed, with only the closest family members in attendance. As soon as Aurelia finished her tribute, a sudden disturbance erupted behind her.Â
“Joey, you can’t go there,” someone called out.Â
Before anyone could react, a flash of white darted forward. A little girl rushed up and threw her arms around Zofia’s portrait. It was Joey, the little girl who was a bit autistic.Â
Joey hugged Zofia’s portrait tightly, refusing to let go, murmuring repeatedly, “Mommy, don’t be scared. Joey will protect you.”Â
The caretaker stepped forward to take the portrait away from Joey, but Joey struggled fiercely, determined not to let go. In the end, Darren gently said, “It’s okay, let her hold it.”Â
When no one tried to take the portrait from her, Joey curled up in a quiet corner, hugging it close. Seeing that Joey was dressed so thinly, Aurelia took off her own coat and wrapped it around her.Â
At first, Joey resisted, but when she looked up, with tears in her eyes, and saw Aurelia, she slowly let her guard down.Â
Her lips quivered, and Joey sobbed, “Can you take me to find Mommy?” Aurelia felt a wave of sadness.Â
The last part of the memorial service was lowering the coffin into the grave. Darren stood before the grave, unable to bring himself to toss his wedding ring.Â
That ring was the last thing Zofia had left him, but it was also something she had made him promise before she died. He had to toss every single thing connected to her at the memorial service.Â
She was afraid that if he kept clinging to her things, he would never be able to let go. That’s why she made him promise not to keep anything, not even their wedding ring.Â
Aurelia was supposed to catch her evening flight back to Ashmont, but Joey just wouldn’t let her go. She stuck to Aurelia like glue.Â
No matter how Jeannie tried to talk her into letting go, Joey wouldn’t budge. Aurelia thus rescheduled her flight and spent another night with Joey.Â
Jeannie told Aurelia that ever since Zofia passed, Joey had barely eaten or slept. She was pretty skinny and had lately wastedÂ
away.Â
With Aurelia coaxing her, Joey finally sat down for a proper meal and slept soundly through the night. The following day, when Aurelia was about to leave, Joey refused to say goodbye. Slie held onto Aurelia’s sleeve and refused to let go.Â
Only when Darren came over did Joey finally let go, though it was obvious she didn’t want to. Aurelia softly ruffled Joey’s hair and said gently, “I’ll come see you whenever I get the chance, okay?”Â
Joey nodded, tears welled up in her eyes. Aurelia scribbled her number on a piece of paper and handed it to Joey. “This is my number. You can call me anytime,” she said.Â

“Okay.” Joey finally said something, face lighting up with a faint smile for the first time.Â
Darren sent his driver to take Aurelia to the airport. Since Darren was clearly not in the mood, Aurelia didn’t have the heart to ask him about the person who had saved her.Â
She only brought it up with the driver on the way to the airport, asking a couple of quick questions. The driver explained that Darren had a dedicated security team with many people, so he had no idea who Aurelia was talking about.Â
Aurelia had just touched down in Ashmont when her phone buzzed. Liam was calling. She figured it was work–related and answered right away. But it turned out Liam just wanted to invite her to his birthday bash.Â
“Sorry, I’m swamped with work and can’t make it. Happy birthday,” Aurelia said without hesitation.Â
To her, Liam was nothing more than a business contact. Their interactions were limited in the boardroom, not at some birthday bash.Â
Although Liam had already expected it, he still felt pretty disappointed. After he hung up, he shot Mrs. Porter a helpless look. She was staring at him, all hopeful. “Got rejected,” he said.Â
Mrs Porter rolled her eyes, saying, “Pathetic! All that Playboy’s reputation is wasted! You can’t even get a girl to say yes!”Â
Liam sighed helplessly, “Guess that’s exactly why she wants nothing to do with ine.”Â
“Serves you right! A man who doesn’t respect himself is just like unwanted trash. Who’d want that anyway?”Â
He was speechless. He had gotten used to his mother’s unreserved scolding.Â
In the end, Mrs. Porter stepped in herself and called Aurelia, saying there was some business stuff she didn’t really understand and wanted to talk face–to–face.Â
Last time when InquireMind did a roadshow at Ashmont University, Mrs. Porter actually came out herself to cheer her on, and even hooked her up with a whole network of society wives.Â
Even if Aurelia knew exactly what Mrs. Porter was trying to pull, no way she could turn her down. She made a quick stop at the mall to pick up a fountain pen as a birthday gift, then hurried over to the place Mrs. Porter had arranged.Â
When Aurelia saw the shop’s name, she instinctively frowned. ‘Why must it be this place?‘ she wondered.Â
But since she was already there, no way she could back out now. Aurelia braced herself and walked in. When she found the private room, she saw someone was already inside.Â
She ignored others and went straight to Liam. “Where’s Mrs. Porter?” Aurelia asked.Â
“My mom had something come up and had to leave,” Liam said, repeating the line his mom had coached him on. “Since you’re already here, how about joining me for a drink?”Â
“I drove here, so I’ll skip drinking. This is for you; happy birthday,” Aurelia said as she handed him the present.Â
Liam had barely taken the present when Aurelia was already prepared to go. “You can have some juice instead,” he quickly added, sounding a bit desperate.Â
“No thanks, you guys have fun,” Aurelia said. With that, she walked out, not giving Liam a chance to say another word.Â
Liam felt totally shot down. He had dated plenty of women and always figured he had the whole winning–over–girls thingÂ
down to an art.Â
But all those moves that used to work like a charm were completely useless with Aurelia. He felt he didn’t have a chance atÂ
all.Â

Liam followed after her, insisting on walking her out. Since it was still early, the venue was almost empty, and the hallway was unusually quiet.Â
One of the private room doors was left ajar, and the voices from inside spilled right out into the corridorÂ
“Mom, you managed to get out of lockup this time because of Cassian, who smoothed things over for you. We really owe him a big favor”Â
That was Karlie talking. She’d even booked a private room here to throw a welcome–back party for Vanessa.Â
Vanessa nodded. “Yeah, yeah, sorry for troubling Cassian again this time. Tessa, remember to thank him on my behalf, okay?Â
“We’re family. No need for all that,” Tessa replied,Â
Karlie grinned, looking all smug, and said, “Exactly! No need to be so polite to Cassian. Honestly, your case was a real headache, but the moment Tessa asked him, he made it happen, no matter how tough it was.Â
“That shows how much he cares about you. Your relationship is seriously enviable!” Tessa couldn’t help but smile, her face glowing with happiness.Â
Seizing the moment, Preston said, “Hey, Tessa, can you ask Cassian to bump me up a level? Give me a fancy title that makes me look good when I’m out and about.”Â
Tessa agreed quickly. “Yeah, I’ll talk to Cassian about it.”Â
Seeing the opportunity, Vanessa jumped in. “Tessa, now that Karlie’s back, can you help her get a decent job?”Â
“That’s easy enough, but we’ll have to wait until HelixTech is listed,” Tessa replied.Â
Karlie asked curiously, “So, is Cassian waiting for HelixTech to be listed before he finally puts a ring on your finger?”Â
