Chapter 49Â
Taylor povÂ
The moment i close the car door the world outside feels like its on mute. The hum of the city fades replaced by the low even rhythm of Aiden’s engine.Â
The air inside smells faintly of leather and that clean expensive cologne he always wears- cool and restrained like him.Â
i slump into the passenger seat dragging the seatbelt across my chest with a little bit more force than necessary.the leather smells faintly of smoke and old cologne it very sharp against the faint sweetness of my own perfume.i brace for quiet the kind of quiet that hums like its holding its breath.Â
a simple drive to the theater–bjust me,him with the city sliding past in blurred neon streaks.Â
he shifts the car into gear without aglance my way.his hands grip the wheel like its a lifeline his knuckles begins to pale his jaw set so hard it looks carved from stone.Â
i watch the way the headlights spill over the slick asphalt scattering gold and white across the wet streets reflecting in his eyes for a heartbeat before they vanish.Â
the air feels tight like it could snap at any second and i realize im the one holding my breath without meaning to.Â
i study his face in the shifting light.he looks calm, too calm.Every line of him controlled, each movement deliberate. i have seen him angry,i have seen him guarded but this- this stillness- feels dangerous.Â
i turn toward the window pretending to watch the traffic blur past but my mind keeps circling back to Vanessa’s words echoing in the back of my skull. ” Aiden gets bored easily.”Â
i hate that i remember them.i hate that they sting.Â
the air between us feels thick with unsaid things.i open my mouth once- then close it again. Not worth it. Maybe he’s just tired.Â
Maybe this is another PR gesture to look normal. Normal couples go to movies. Even fake ones.Â
then i hear it- a clean metallic click that slices through the low hum of the car.my head turns before i even think to look.Aiden’s briefcase rests on his lap black and polished catching the glow from the dashboard.he flicks the latch again and the sound lands sharp like punctuation in the silence.Â
He opens it with that same careful precision he does everything with. No rush. No wasted movement.from inside he pulls out a stack of papers thick and perfectly bound the edges too crisp to have ever been touched by real life.Â
he places them on the console between us neat and deliberate a quiet line drawn down the middle of the car.,Â
I blink. “What’s this?”Â
“An agreement,” he says, calm and flat. Like it’s nothing.Â
“An agreement?” The word scrapes out of me, thin and uncertain.Â
he doesnt glance up.His focus stays fixed on the road hands steady on the wheel. ” it outlines yourÂ

compensation and responsibilities,” he says clipped and professional as if we are about to shake hands over a business deal instead of sitting shoulder to shoulder in a car heading to a movie.Â
“you should read it before you sign. ”Â
for a moment i cant move.the papers sit there white and heavy the air around them seeming to tighten. when i finally reach for them the pages whisper against each other too loud in the small sealed space.Â
the print is dense rows of black text pressed so close together it feels like the words themselves are suffocating., I skim a line. Then another.and suddenly certain words leap out bold and cold- confidentiality, exclusivity image rights, termination clause.each one hits with a dull weight locking something invisible around my ribs. My fingers still against the paper.my pulse stutters then starts climbing fast. i look at him but his expression doesnt shift.not even a flicker..,Â
