Last month, she made a trip to the countryside. Normally, there’d be no such assignment for her anytime soon.

Realizing it was futile to protest, Emily simply caved in. “Alright, I got it,” she murmured. 

After hanging up, Emily plopped down on the edge of her bed and sat there in a stupor.

Sure, furthering her studies with a master’s or a doctorate could open more doors. But with Ethan in the picture, he could ax her career with a single word.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the line, Shirley wrapped up the call and then turned to Andrew across the desk. “Mr. Robinson, I’ve sorted out the work as you asked,” she said.

Then, rising to his feet and giving his coat a little shake, he declared, “Well, I’m outta here.”

Only when he was out of sight did she finally let out a long–awaited sigh of relief.

At Carter Manor, Emily sat there like a statue on the bed for what felt like an eternity. 

It was the shrill ring of her phone that jolted her out of her reverie. 

Glancing at the screen, she did a double–take. 

It was Sophia calling. 

Back in the day, it was always Emily reaching out to Sophia. Who’d have thought the tables would turn and her daughter would be the one making the call 

Even though she’d sworn off medling in Sophia’s life, she was still her mom, so answering was a no–brainer.

As soon as she picked up, Sophia’s voice chirped through the line, “Mommy, what are you doing?” 

Emily replied coolly, “Not much. Just about to hit the hay.” 

Just then, the bedroom door creaked open. 

Looking up, Emily saw Molly tottering in with a basin of water. 

“Sorry, Aunt Emily. Am I interrupting your call?” Molly asked, her grip on the basin a bit wobbly 

Fearing a spill, Emily quickly got up and took the basin from her. “I thought you were in bed, Molly. What brings you here?” 

Molly dragged over a little stool, plopped down on it, and looked up at Emily with big, earnest eyes. “Aaron said your feet are swollen. When my feet swell, Mommy always gives me a foot soak. It makes me feel loads better. So I thought I’d do the same for you.” 

Tears welled up in Emily’s eyes. “You’re such an angel, Molly. Always looking out for me,” she said, her voice thick with 

emotion. 

When she’d gotten up to grab the basin, Emily had tossed her phone on the bed. 

Molly’s kindness touched her so much that she completely forgot Sophia was still on the line

Molly bent down, gently picked up Emily’s foot, and lowered it into the basin. “Is the water okay, Aunt Emily? Not too hot, right?” 

Tears brimmed in Emily’s eyes, and her voice quivered. “No… it’s not hot,” she managed to say. 

Molly laughed playfully, “Aunt Emily, why are you crying?” 

“Nothing. I’m just feeling so happy.” Emily replied. 

“If you like to soak your feet, I’ll bring you water for it every time,” Molly offered cheerfully. 

“Hey, you’re a little princess, Molly. I can’t have you being my servant. Just this one time’s already got me all choked up.” Emily said. 

“As long as you like it, I’m happy to do it. I wanna make you happy, Aunt Emily,” Molly insisted. 

Over the phone side, Sophia was gripping her phone, taking in every word of the chat between Emily and Molly. 

She called “Mommy” a couple of times at first, but Emily didn’t 

answer. 

In a huff, Sophia hung up and then chucked the phone across the room.

Just then, Ethan stepped into the bedroom. Spotting Sophia all riled up, he furrowed his brows and asked, “Sophie, what’s up?” 

Sophia ran into her dad’s arms, tears streaming. “Daddy, Mommy might be hurt. Let’s go check on her, okay?” 

It was a mix of real worry for Emily and annoyance at how Emily was praising Molly. 

After all, she was Emily’s own daughter. Why was Molly getting all the love? 

Hearing Sophia’s words, Ethan was reminded of what happened earlier that day. He knew Emily was hurt, but he didn’t feel like going to see her.

He knelt down and wiped the tears from Sophia’s eyes. “Your mom doesn’t need us looking after her,” he said. 

Sophia fell quiet. 

That chubby, annoying Molly was probably buttering up her mom right now. 

She didn’t wanna go and see that sight. 

Once Sophia stopped fussing, Ethan gave her a hug. “Go wash up and hit the hay. I’ll be with you.”
