Upon reaching her dorm, Emily was greeted by the sudden illumination of her phone screen. Before she could even register whether it was a video or a regular call, her finger accidentally hit the answer button. 

Immediately, Ethan’s menacing visage filled the screen, looking as if he could devour someone. 

Frowning in displeasure, Emily shot out, “What now?” 

The moment Ethan saw that Emily was fully dressed, the raging anger within him dissipated in an instant. 

His voice turned notably calmer as he inquired, “What are you doing?” 

Finding his behavior odd, Emily had no intention of answering. Instead, she cut to the chase. “So, what’s the matter?” 

In a cold, flat tone, Ethan commanded, “Come back tomorrow morning and make breakfast for Sophie.” 

Irritation seeped into Emily’s voice. “I’ve already told you, I can’t make it back.” 

Even with their faces on the screen, Emily avoided looking at 

Ethan.

Meanwhile, Ethan kept stealing glances, checking if there was anyone else in the background. 

Emily’s impatient response set Ethan off. He snapped, “Emily!” trying to use his old authority to intimidate her. 

Seated on the edge of the bed, Emily placed her phone on the nightstand, vanishing from the video. 

Without seeing her, Ethan felt a growing unease. 

He still missed the old Emily who always did as he said. 

This new, stubborn Emily annoyed him. 

Regaining her composure, Emily said gently, “Ethan, being loud doesn’t make you right.” 

Noticing Emily’s softened attitude, Ethan also toned down his hostility. “Come back tomorrow. I need to talk to you,” he said calmly. 

Emily shrugged it off. “Just tell me over the phone.” 

Leaning against the headboard, she didn’t want to see Ethan’s face, nor be seen by him. 

For them, meetings were unnecessary unless it was urgent.

Suddenly, Ethan blurted out, “It’s about Sophie.”

Ethan had thought Emily couldn’t truly be heartless towards her daughter. But much to his shock, she really didn’t seem to care. 

“Emily, you…” He was left speechless. 

Amid the stillness, Emily spoke up, “Even if there’s a big deal, we’ll sort it out when I’m back.” 

Ethan’s senses tingled, and he blurted out, “Where are you at? I’ll swing by and pick you up.” 

It was a first–time offer, breaking the norm. 

Emily was momentarily stunned but then let out a wry chuckle. “Seriously, Ethan? You’re asking me where I am?” 

“Yes,” Ethan replied simply. 

The sarcasm in Emily’s laugh deepened. “You, of all people, should know where I am. Why the act?”

Her irritation was starting to seep through. 

Ethan looked utterly lost. “What on earth are you talking about?”

Fed up, Emily yelled, “Quit playing innocent, Ethan. You’re the one who messed this up. I don’t wanna see you. Don’t call unless it’s really important.” 

With a sharp click, she ended the call. 

In the study, Ethan stared at the screen, suddenly feeling annoyed. 

He chucked his phone onto the table, the clatter echoing in the silence. 

Just then, the study door creaked open. 

It was Nancy. Before she could utter a word, Ethan barked, “Outta here.” 

He’d assumed it was the maid, hence the gruff tone. 

Nancy guessed his mistake and stayed put. She sidled up behind him and murmured, “What’s going on, Ethan?” 

Ethan swiveled around, gave her a quick look, and mumbled, “It’s nothing.”

Seeing he wasn’t in the mood to talk, Nancy didn’t push it. She set the cup she was holding on the table. “I brewed you some coffee. Give it a try,” she said softly. 

Ethan just grunted in response. 

“I’ll leave you be then,” Nancy said. 

With a nod from Ethan, Nancy was about to step out when he called, “Nancy.” 

“What?” She turned around, eyes glistening. 

Walking over, Ethan cracked a smile and said, “Thank you for these days.” 

Shaking her head, Nancy replied, “It’s nothing. No biggie.” 

“Tell me where you wanna go, and I’ll take you,” Ethan offered. 

Beaming, Nancy said, “I’ll think about it and let you know.” 

“Sure thing. Get some shut–eye early. No late nights,” Ethan said. 

“Okay.” 

After lingering in the study for a bit, Ethan heard a little voice ring out. “Daddy.”
