Henry and Linda, ever the warm–hearted hosts, invited Aaron to stay for a late–night bite. But Emily stepped in, saying, “Dad, Mom, Aaron’s gotta get back and rest. It’s way past bedtime, so let’s not hold him up.”Â
Aaron was well aware that Emily’s return had something to do with Ethan’s coercion. He also realized she yearned to have a private chat with her family.Â
So, he got the hint and politely declined. “I’ll come by another time,” he promised.Â
With that, Henry and Linda simply smiled and watched as Aaron drove off into the night.Â
The following morning, Emily sat down in the dining room for breakfast, hoping to catch up with her family. However, Chloe and Ryan were nowhere to be found.Â
Left with no choice, she made her way to the hospital for work.Â
By evening, Emily was the first to return to Carter Manor. 1/6Â

The servants had set the table, and they all dug into dinner as they usually did.Â
Molly was in high spirits. She shelled shrimp for Emily, poured her a glass of water, and exclaimed, “Welcome back, Aunt Emily! Now we can all be together all the time!”Â
Chloe forced a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes, and Ryan was no different, feigning calmness that seemed a bit off.Â
Meanwhile, Henry and Linda were quiet, trying too hard to act normal, which only made things seem more suspicious.Â
Emily could read them like a book.Â
It was obvious that Ethan had meddled with Chloe and Ryan’s jobs, and they were just trying not to worry her.Â
The meal left Emily with mixed feelings.Â
After everyone had finished eating, she was the last to rise and head upstairs.Â
She knew Ethan was sending her a warning.Â
Not wanting to disrupt the newfound family harmony, she decided to call Ethan and find out what he was up to.Â

No answer. She gave it another shot, then one more, but each time, it was the same deal–nothing.Â
Eventually, Emily stopped calling and decided to go to Joy Gardens the next morning.Â
Recalling Ethan’s mention that Sophia wanted Emily’s soup, she saw it as the perfect excuse to see him.Â
Before the sun peeked over the horizon, Emily set off for Joy Gardens.Â
Rebecca got up and noticed the kitchen light was on. Assuming it had been left on accidentally, she walked in and was surprised to find Emily, apron–clad, cooking at the stove.Â
“Mrs. Wilson?” Rebecca asked, her voice laced with confusion.Â
“Yeah,” Emily replied softly.Â
Rebecca was flustered. “What are you doing getting up so early?”Â
Emily just gave a gentle smile and didn’t offer an explanation.Â
After all, she hadn’t even spent the night at Joy Gardens. 376Â

Before long, Emily had the soup she’d made set on the dining table, along with two refreshing side dishes.Â
It was already seven. Sophia ought to be up by now.Â
Instead of heading upstairs, Emily sat quietly at the table, waiting.Â
In no time, the sound of laughter and banter floated down from above.Â
“Nancy, you look amazing today!”Â
“And you, Sophie, are just as gorgeous!” Nancy said.Â
“I wish I could look as good as you when I grow up, Nancy.”Â
“Oh, Sophie, when you’re all grown–up, you’ll be even more beautiful than me.”Â
“Daddy, do you think I’ll look as pretty as Nancy?” Sophia asked.Â
Ethan said, “Well, that’s something we’ll figure out when you’re older.”Â
As the voices drew nearer from the stairway, Emily looked up. There, emerging from the dimness, were Nancy and Ethan, each holding one of Sophia’s hands.Â

At first sight, they could easily pass for a loving family.Â
Sitting, conspicuously at the table, Family was immediately spotted by the trio,Â
Instinctively, Sophia released When and Nancy’s hands, Gazing at Family seated silently in the dining area, she blurted out, “Mommy?”Â
Looking up, Emily replied, “Yeah, come on down for breakfast. I made that soup you love so much,”Â
Sophia was thrilled. She ran down the stairs and rushed to the table. She waved her little hand over the steam rising from the soup pot and took a big sniff, “Wow! It’s Mommy’s soup. I haven’t had it in forever. Thanks, Mommy!”Â
Kids had short memories, Sophia had already forgotten about the time Emily had slapped Nancy and the incident at Carter Manor that had made her mom mad,Â
After all, Sophia was her own daughter. Emily couldn’t stay mad at her. She just gave a soft smile and said, “I’m glad you like it.”Â
Once seated, Emily served Sophia a bowl of soup. After taking a bite, Sophia was so content that she started kicking her feet a little. Then she turned to Nancy and said, “Nancy, you gotta try Moinmy’s soup. It’s super yummy.”Â

Hearing this, Nancy smiled and said, “Nah, you go ahead and have more, Sophie, I’m good.”Â
Sophia stuffed another spoonful of soup into her mouth, her cheeks bulging. She just nodded and mumbled an “mm–hmm“.Â
As Emily saw that Sophia still thought of Nancy even while enjoying, the soup, a pang of jealousy shot through her heart.Â
But Sophia was completely unaware of her mom’s changing emotions.Â
All this while, Ethan didn’t even glance in Emily’s direction. Her presence at Joy Gardens didn’t seem to faze him in the slightest.Â
