After arriving back in Los Angeles, Aaron escorted Emily to Carter Manor.

Henry and Linda, ever the warm–hearted hosts, invited Aaron to stay for a late–night bite. But Emily stepped in, saying, “Dad, Mom, Aaron’s gotta get back and rest. It’s way past bedtime, so let’s not hold him up.”

So, he got the hint and politely declined. “I’ll come by another time,” he promised.

The following morning, Emily sat down in the dining room for breakfast, hoping to catch up with her family. However, Chloe and Ryan were nowhere to be found.

Rebecca was flustered. “What are you doing getting up so early?” 

Emily just gave a gentle smile and didn’t offer an explanation.

Ethan said, “Well, that’s something we’ll figure out when you’re older.” 

As the voices drew nearer from the stairway, Emily looked up. There, emerging from the dimness, were Nancy and Ethan, each holding one of Sophia’s hands.

At first sight, they could easily pass for a loving family. 

Sitting, conspicuously at the table, Family was immediately spotted by the trio, 

Instinctively, Sophia released When and Nancy’s hands, Gazing at Family seated silently in the dining area, she blurted out, “Mommy?” 

Looking up, Emily replied, “Yeah, come on down for breakfast. I made that soup you love so much,” 

Sophia was thrilled. She ran down the stairs and rushed to the table. She waved her little hand over the steam rising from the soup pot and took a big sniff, “Wow! It’s Mommy’s soup. I haven’t had it in forever. Thanks, Mommy!” 

Kids had short memories, Sophia had already forgotten about the time Emily had slapped Nancy and the incident at Carter Manor that had made her mom mad, 

After all, Sophia was her own daughter. Emily couldn’t stay mad at her. She just gave a soft smile and said, “I’m glad you like it.” 

Once seated, Emily served Sophia a bowl of soup. After taking a bite, Sophia was so content that she started kicking her feet a little. Then she turned to Nancy and said, “Nancy, you gotta try Moinmy’s soup. It’s super yummy.”

As Emily saw that Sophia still thought of Nancy even while enjoying, the soup, a pang of jealousy shot through her heart. 

But Sophia was completely unaware of her mom’s changing emotions. 

All this while, Ethan didn’t even glance in Emily’s direction. Her presence at Joy Gardens didn’t seem to faze him in the slightest.
