Chapter 68 Deliberately Ignoring HerÂ
After what seemed an eternity, Ethan finally descended the stairs with Nancy.Â

There was no hint of them lingering for breakfast; they made a beeline for the hall exit.Â
Suddenly, Emily popped up from her seat and called out, “Ethan, got a minute to talk?”Â
Ethan stood off–center, while Emily faced him head–on.Â
At the sound of her voice, he halted but didn’t glance her way. Standing sideways, he shot back, “I’m swamped. No time today.”Â
Emily wasn’t ready to drop it. “So, when will you be free then?” she pressed.Â
“Beats me,” Ethan said.Â
At his words, Emily’s hands at her sides clenchedÂ
unconsciously. It was crystal clear that Ethan was dodging her.Â
So, she decided to let it rest.Â

a sweet, soothing tone, she said, “Sophie, your dad and I gotta run some errands. How about your mom takes you to school later?”Â
Sophia was slurping her soup. She blinked her big, doe–like eyes and chirped, “Okay.”Â
Nancy ruffled her hair and then turned back to Ethan. “Come on, Ethan, let’s go,” she said.Â
The hard look on Ethan’s face melted into a smile as he looked at Nancy. “Okay,” he replied.Â
Under Emily’s watchful gaze, the two strolled out of the hall side by side.Â
When Emily finally tore her eyes away, she realized her eyes were brimming with tears.Â
After finishing her meal, Sophia suddenly jolted with the realization that time was ticking. She dashed upstairs, yelling, “Mommy, I’ll grab my schoolbag!”Â
Watching her daughter’s retreating back, Emily felt a lump in her throat, and her eyes grew even more watery.Â
Taking a seat at the dining table again, Emily turned to Rebecca, who was hovering nearby. “Did Nancy stay here last night?” she inquired.Â

Rebecca ducked her head, too nervous to answer.Â
Emily let out a self–deprecating chuckle. “Figured as much,” she murmured.Â
“Mrs. Wilson, you know I’m just a servant,” Rebecca mumbled.Â
Emily gave a small nod. “No hard feelings,” she said.Â
Just then, Sophia bounded downstairs, lugging her little schoolbag. She grabbed Emily’s hand. “Mommy, let’s go,” she said.Â
Looking at her daughter, whose eyes were a mirror of her own, Emily felt a twinge in her heart.Â
Maybe Sophia still needed her, but Nancy always came first.Â
In the evening, Emily made her way back to Joy Gardens after work.Â
She knew Ethan’s excuse in the morning was just a load of bull.Â
With Ryan and Chloe’s problem hanging over her head, she couldn’t find peace.Â
This mess had to be sorted out pronto.Â

Rebecca did a double–take when she saw Emily return but keptÂ

“Mrs. Wilson, what can I whip up for dinner? I’ll get right on it,” she offered politely.Â
Emily waved her off. “No, I’ll wait for Ethan here,” she said.Â
Rebecca knew better than to argue and let it go.Â
However, it was eight o’clock, and there was no sign of Ethan or Sophia.Â
By nine o’clock, Emily’s patience was wearing thin.Â
Rebecca had been keeping her company. All of a sudden, she slapped her forehead and blurted, “Mrs. Wilson, it’s the weekend tomorrow! No school for Ms. Sophia Wilson.”Â
Emily was utterly bewildered. Turning her face, she shot Rebecca a quizzical look and let out a soft “Huh?”Â
Unable to hold Emily’s gaze, Rebecca mumbled, her voice barely audible, “Mr. Wilson and Ms. Sophia Wilson probably won’t be back tonight.”Â
Emily sensed something amiss and furrowed her brows. She inquired, “Don’t they usually come home on weekends?”Â
“Every now and then,” Rebecca replied.Â

Where do they go when they’re not around?”Â

Rebecca felt a pang of unease but managed to tell Emily, “They might go on a vacation or head over to Ms. Thompson’s. What they get up to, well, it probably changes week by week…”Â
Her voice grew softer and softer as she spoke.Â
Emily got the gist. Speaking in a flat tone, she simply said, “IÂ
see.”Â
Rebecca promptly asked, “Are you ready to turn in, Mrs. Wilson? I’ll draw you a bath.”Â
Rising from the couch, Emily refused politely. “No need. I’m leaving.”Â
With that, she grabbed her bag and made a beeline for the door without a second thought.Â
Noticing her firm resolve, Rebecca quickly asked, “Mrs. Wilson, does that mean you won’t be coming back to stay?”Â
Emily halted in her tracks. After a brief moment of contemplation, she whispered, “I’m not sure.”Â
Once outside Joy Gardens, Emily hopped in her car and dialed Ethan’s number. The call connected, yet there was no answer.Â
She then sent him a text: [I need to talk to you.]Â

But as minutes ticked by, there was still silence on the other end.Â
Eventually, she had to accept that Ethan was deliberately ignoring her.Â
Upon arriving at Carter Manor, Emily made her way upstairs. Once Chloe had lulled Molly to sleep, she called Chloe into herÂ
room.Â
Once Chloe entered, Emily asked with concern, “How’s work treating you, Chloe?”Â
Chloe flashed a smile and replied, “It’s going great.”Â
No matter how Emily tried to pry, Chloe stuck to the sameÂ
answer.Â
Clearly, she didn’t want Emily to fret.Â
Emily decided not to push further. After Chloe left, she made her way towards the study.Â
Just as she was about to rap on the door, Ryan’s voice rangÂ
