Are you alright? Are you hurt or feeling unwell anywhere?Kelvin turned to Edwina and asked gently.

He grabbed her arm, and scanned her from head to toe, making sure she was okay. His gentle tone was a world apart from the rage he had shown seconds earlier.

Edwina felt awkward being cared for. In the Ash Wings, she had always been the one taking care of others.

Honestly, not even a dozen elite commandos could lay a finger on her, let alone some guy like Otis.

Edwina tried to pull away, but Kelvin only tightened his grip on her arm. Edwina winced and said, Let go; it hurts.”

Kelvin immediately let go. Sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you.Edwina saw how quickly he let go, and though he tried to hide it, the worry in his eyes was obvious.

Edwina bit back the scolding she was about to give him. In her world, everything was just a deal.

The Lennox family took her in, and in return, she was expected to shield Abby from trouble. Other people paid the Ash Wings, and she handled their business for them.

So what’s Kelvin after with all this concern?she thought. Edwina usually prided herself on seeing through people, but Kelvin was different.

His worry for her actually seemed real. But they had only just met. They were practically strangers.

Kelvin asked Pauline to take Madeline back, then turned to Edwina. Let me give you a ride.”

And what about him?Edwina pointed at Otis, still knocked out cold. No way she was letting him die here.

I’ll have someone handle it,” Kelvin replied. With Kelvin pressing her, Edwina had no choice but to agree.

But there was no way she was going to give him the Simmons family’s address. Belleview Gardens, 123 Golden Road, she replied.

It was a property Edwina had invested ages ago but never actually lived in. She never thought it would actually come in handy one day.

Edwina picked the property closest to the Dark Club, but even the fifteenminute drive felt like an eternity. You don’t need to go inside. Just drop me off here, she said.

Kelvin didn’t want to push her, so he pulled over. Belleview Gardens. Now that I’ve got the address, getting the unit number next time should be a piece of cake,he thought.

However, Kelvin had never thought that Edwina’s request to drop her off at Belleview Gardens was just an excuse to brush him off. She didn’t live here.

Kelvin leaned over toward her in the passenger seat, closing the distance between them. Edwina tensed up instantly at how close he suddenly got. What are you doing?”

He lifted his hand, and just as Edwina was about to lash out, there was a sharp click inside the car. She felt the tension leaving her as the seatbelt popped free.

Kelvin sat up straight again. Just helping you with your seatbelt he said. Edwina froze for a split second, then acted like nothing had happened. Goodnight.”

Alright, she replied. Edwina opened the door and walked out without even glancing back. She didn’t even say goodnight in

return.

Chapter 28

It wasn’t until her figure had completely disappeared from view that Kelvin finally snapped out of it.

His eyes drifted to the rearview mirror, staring at his own reflection. He thought, Have I started looking old or something? Why doesn’t Edwina seem interested in me at all? It’s like she doesn’t even realize I’m pursuing her

Edwina shot a message to Gloria to let her know she was safe, then crashed at the apartment for the night. Early the next morning, she headed straight for the Maberly Fashion department.

Pauline and Madeline were already at their desks, both sporting dark circles under their eyes. Clearly, they hadn’t gotten much sleep last night.

As soon as Madeline spotted Edwina, she rushed over. Edwina, thank you. Pauline told me what happened. If it weren’t for you, no one would have even found me, let alone rescued me.”

Edwina wasn’t great at comforting people, so she just gave Madeline’s shoulder a quick pat.

Hand me the cooperation proposal documents with Design Harmony. I’ll take care of the clothing order production,Edwina said.

Really?Pauline asked. When she heard there was still a chance to save Maberly Fashion’s orders, hope finally flickered in her eyes.

They had generated a significant amount of buzz with their online sales. If they couldn’t deliver on time, the internet would tear them apart.

If things got ugly, Maberly Fashion could crash and burn, right back to where they started.

Edwina nodded, got the rundown from Pauline, and headed straight to Design Harmony. Upon arriving, she said to the receptionist, I need to see Otis.”

The receptionist didn’t recognize Edwina, but the moment she caught that commanding vibe, she couldn’t help but straighten up and show respect.

Mr. Davidson is currently being honored by the company. If you have something to discuss, please wait until the meeting is over,” the receptionist said.

Honored?Edwina let out a mocking laugh. She thought, Seriously? A guy like him deserves an award?

After getting beaten to a pulp by Kelvin yesterday, he still has the nerve to show up today. Talk about dedication‘

Which floor is the conference room on?Edwina asked. The receptionist stalled, not giving a straight answer.

Edwina switched gears. I’m one of his business partners. We’ve got a major contract coming up. It’s easier if I wait outside the conference room.”

The receptionist replied instantly, Room 122.She bought her words and let Edwina breeze right through.

Edwina strode up and pushed open the door to the conference hall like she owned the place.

Coincidentally, Otis, his arm in a sling and head bandaged, was on stage receiving the award.

Mr. Davidson has been a dedicated and hardworking member of Design Harmony’s production department. He’s always kept meticulous records of every transaction, the announcer said.

Does someone like him really deserve to be called dedicated?Edwina said. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was just right for everyone in the room to hear.

Everyone turned to stare at Edwina, like she was some kind of monster who had barged in.

Otis totally lost it the moment he saw Edwina. YYou’ve got some nerve showing up here? She’s with Maberly Fashion.

Her guys beat me yesterday and left me like this, and I haven’t even had time to call the police.

Edwina strode right up to him, her eyes cold. Didn’t get around to calling the cops, or just too chicken to do it?”

Attempted rape, group indecency, embezzlement of public funds. Which one gets you Design Harmony’s Employee of the Year, huh?Edwina sneered.

Edwina flicked the file at Otis’s face, her voice laced with contempt. The crowd instantly broke out in chaos.

You bitch. You’re spouting nonsense!Otis yelled. He tried to shove Edwina with his only good arm, but she effortlessly sidestepped him.

Let me use your computer,Edwina said as she started typing. Im with Maberly Fashion’s clothing department. We were working out an outsourcing deal with Otis from Design Harmony.

He refused to sign the contract, tried to keep it all hidden from Design Harmony, and secretly used the factory and workers to pocket the profits for himself.”

He even tried to assault one of our staff at Maberly Fashion. Here’s the evidence, she said, hitting enter.

Shortly after that, the giant screen was filled with data on Otis’s undeclared income, along with photos of him bullying employees and harassing Madeline.

All relevant individuals had been blurred out, and only Otis’s hideous face remained unobscured.

So, esteemed leaders of Design Harmony, you’re really going to give an award to someone like this instead of firing him? Isn’t that ridiculous?Edwina said.

Otis snapped, Where did you get all this data?”

His firewall was flimsier than Oliver’s doghouse, Edwina thought, rolling her eyes.

After his outburst, Otis went cold and composed. You’re just a Maberly Fashion employee. You have no right meddling in Design Harmony’s business.”

He lowered his voice so only Edwina could hear. Just a word of warning. Mind your own business. Don’t pick the wrong side.”

Mess with me, and getting away won’t be that simple,” he warned in a low, threatening tone.
