Chiara sprang at Hammer, jaws wide, and clamped down hard on his neck.

Her big, innocent eyes lost their shine, now burning with the wild, savage look of a wolf cub.

With every ounce of strength she had, Chiara bit into the artery in Hammer’s neck and refused to let go.

Filip once told her. “The neck is the weakest spot.”

Chiara gave Hammer a bloody, defiant grin, her whole body shaking with rage and pain. She said, “If this is how it is, then neither of us gets out alive.”

He crawled over and started ripping Chiara’s clothes off, hands rough and desperate.

Just then, one of the thugs outside suddenly demanded, “Who are you looking for?”

Lucian arrived with a squad of soldiers and powered humans, more than a dozen strong. The moment he spotted those sketchy–looking guys lurking around the tent, his face darkened

“Damn, that girl is in danger,” Lucian said urgently.

These guys were straight–up killers, the kind who’d murder without blinking.

The soldiers and powered humans with Lucian looked ready to explode with worry.

One of the powered humans whipped out his dagger and slashed the thug’s throat, dropping him instantly.

The commotion outside made Hammer inside snap to attention but he was already too crazed to care. His bloodlust had taken over: nothing else mattered now.

Even if the world was ending, he was hell–bent on taking out Chiara first.

Just then, a blade ripped through the tent, and a dozen soldiers and powered humans appeared, their faces deadly serious

Their presence was so overwhelming that the nearby refugees instinctively stepped back, clearing a space around the tent.

They all stretched their necks to watch, remembering that a mother and daughter lived in that tent.

When the crowd outside caught a glimpse of what was going on inside the tent, they all gasped in shock.

Even the refugees who’d just come to watch couldn’t help but shiver.

Someone said, “Damn, even a kid that small gets caught up in this mess. Poor thing.”

Linda lay unconscious on the ground. Blood streamed from the top of Chiara’s head as she fought for her life in Hammer’s grip.

Her winter coat was shredded, and one sleeve of her inner shirt was yanked clean off.

“You guys-” Hammer tried to speak, but before he could get another word out, a dagger flashed and sliced his throat open.

One of the soldiers took off his winter coat and draped it over Chiara. He was so tall and broad that just his jacket completely engulfed her tiny frame.

Chiara’s eyes went wide with fear as she stared at the newcomer. She instinctively scooted back, her little body trembling all

over.

Her big eyes now looked dull, like pearls dulled by dust.

She huddled quietly in the corner, not making a sound.

The soldier’s heart went out to her. He said softly, “Don’t be afraid, little one. We’re here to save you.”

He tried to take a step closer, but Chiara shrieked, “Don’t come near me! Go away! All of you, get away from me!”

Everyone quickly backed off.

For the soldiers, Chiara and Linda were the ones the general himself had ordered them to find.

For the powered humans, Chiara was basically worth three hundred pounds of grain and a premium cigarette.

They couldn’t help but swallow hard at the thought.

It had been ages since any of them had had a proper meal.

But now, even these tough guys were stumped. Chiara was so freaked out that she’d scream in terror every time anyone tried

Chiara was shaking so hard she looked like she’d been through a blender, totally out of it, scared out of her mind.

Chloe kept patting Chiara’s back, her voice trembling with relief and choked with emotion.

Chloe said, “Don’t be scared, I’m here now. I swear, I’ll take out anyone who ever hurt you.”

It was like Chiara finally realized who was in front of her: the sister she’d seen in the videos. That recognition hit her all at once, and she just broke down, bursting into tears.

“Chloe, why weren’t you here sooner?” she wailed, her voice choked with sobs.

She cried her heart out, gasping for breath between sobs.

Chloe’s heart ached for Chiara, and she kept gently coaxing her, over and over, trying to calm her down.

Chloe muttered, “Sorry, I’m late.

“With me here, nobody can bully you.”

Frank and the others rushed over. Without a second thought, Frank scanned the area and grabbed a blanket from the nearest refugee, wrapping it tightly around Linda, who was on the verge of freezing solid.

In weather like this, if one so much as passed out or fell asleep, one’s body would turn to ice in no time. One might never wake again.

“Chloe, Mom’s gone. I don’t have a mom anymore,” she choked out between sobs, her voice raw with heartbreak.

Chloe was overwhelmed with emotion, her voice thick with tears as she said, “It’s okay, it’s okay. Your mom is not dead. With me here, nothing will happen to her.”
