Liana came out in a spotless down jacket and, without hesitation grabbed Linda and pulled her inside.
“Come in. You must be freezing after that long journey,” Liana sad warmly.
She didn’t even flinch at how dirty and smelly Linda looked.
Linda, feeling embarrassed, quickly pulled her hands back, worried about all the dirt and grime that had built up after so long without washing.
She was worried she’d get Liana’s clean clothes dirty.
“I… I’m a mess,” Linda mumbled, feeling self–conscious about all the dirt on her.
Liana just smiled warmly and pulled her closer.
“When Chloe went out last night, I just knew she must’ve found you. I got some clean clothes ready for you guys,” Liana said, nodding toward the warm clothes and fresh down jacket on the couch.
“Dinner’s almost ready. Go take a nice hot shower first, then come eat,” Liana added with a gentle smile.
Chiara’s eyes sparkled with excitement. She asked, “Chloe, can I take a shower with Mom?”
Before Chloe could answer, Liana smiled warmly and said, “I’ve already turned on the heat and hot water in the bathroom, and set out some warm clothes for you both.”
Chiara and Linda both glanced at Chloe, looking a bit
eager
and nervous.
Even in peaceful times, they’d never lived in a villa or anywhere this luxurious.
The place was so grand and luxurious that they couldn’t help but feel a bit self–conscious.
They were worried that their presence would be a burden and make the others unhappy.
When Chloe nodded, they both smiled and went into the bathroom together, feeling relieved and happy.
After their shower, they were surprised by how warmly everyone welcomed them and even praised them.
Molly and Chiara were about the same age, and they instantly became friends.
“Chiara, you’re so pretty,” Molly said with a big smile.
“You’re pretty too,” Chiara replied, blushing a little.
The delicious smell of food wafted out from the kitchen, and soon the table was piled high with food. Linda’s eyes went wide at the overwhelming variety, and she secretly swallowed, trying not to drool.
Chiara winced, looking pained. She asked, “Chloe, isn’t this a bit too much?”
Honestly, with all this food, if one rationed it, one person could eat for months.
Molly tugged Chiara’s hand and, grinning, popped a small muffin right into her mouth.
Chiara’s eyes lit up. She swallowed it all at once, totally blissed out.
“Don’t worry, Chiara! Chloe’s a total boss. Now you can eat like this every day,” Molly said, beaming.

Chiara whipped her head around, staring at Chloe in shock. She asked, ‘Chloe, are you serionally the tour beer
Chloe picked up a muffin and took her time eating it. She askedWhat’s the problem?”
Chiara shot up from her seat, practically yelling, “Problem? This the Guardian District. Only important people get to le here, and you’re the leader. I mean… what?”
Chiara leaned in, practically nose–to–nose with Chloe. She asked “What’s your ability? Did you really hit second–leve
To Chiara, second–level powered humans were basically the coolest, most badass people ever,
Chiara thought, ‘Chloe is actually a second–level powered humani
‘Oh man, from now on, I’m strutting around like a total boss.
Molly giggled, grabbed Chiara’s hand, and folded her thumb into her palm, making a hand sign for the number four
“What does that mean?” Chiara asked, looking puzzled.
“Level four! Chloe’s a level–four powered human!” Molly said, grinning from ear to ear,
With a loud thud, Linda tumbled right off her stool.
“Chloe, you… you’re a level–four powered human?” Linda stammered, her voice shaking with disbelief.
Linda thought, ‘No way, is this for real? I thought second–level powered humans were already the top dogs around here.
Rumor had it that the mercenary group leader in the Elite District reached third–level
For someone like Linda, a total normie, even third–level powered humans were straight–up legendary.
Linda thought, ‘But Chloe is actually a level–four powered human?
‘What kind of out–of–this–world power is that?
‘Oh my god, my husband, you left us way too soon! If only you could see this–our ancestors must be throwing a party in the afterlife. No, forget that, they’re probably having a full–blown fireworks show!‘ Linda thought, her head reeling
“Aunt Linda, are you alright?” Chloe asked, quickly helping Linda up from the floor.
Linda shook her head like crazy. She said, “I’m good. Just need a moment to wrap my head around this.”
This time, she sounded way more confident than before.
With Chloe being a level–four powered human and the captain. Linda didn’t have to worry about her and Chiara dragging Chloe down anymore.
“By the way, Aunt Linda, I’ve only told everyone outside that I have a second–level healing ability,” Chloe said.
Linda nodded and said, “Understood.”
No one said anything more after that. Chiara was too busy stuffing her face, grease smeared all over her mouth.
Chloe asked, “By the way, where’s Filip?”
At the mention of her son, Linda suddenly lost her appetite. She let out a heavy sigh, her heart sinking.
Linda said, “Filip went out with the scavengers. There are a few Awakened Groups leading the way, so it’s supposed to be pretty safe.”

Chiara pouted, her face full of worry. She added, “But a bunch of scavenger teams have already come back, and Filip still
isn’t here.”
Chloe’s eyes narrowed.
“Do you know where they went?” she asked, her voice low and urgent.
Linda replied, “I think it was some hospital.”
Chloe shot up from her seat, exclaiming, “A hospital?”
Linda nodded.
Chloe pressed her lips together, feeling restless and agitated; her aura seemed to ripple with her mood.
Hospitals were the most dangerous places after the apocalypse. They were packed with people running high fevers, and those were the first ones to turn into zombies.
Suddenly, something clicked in Chloe’s mind.
In her previous life, Filip had barely made it out alive from this very trip, and that’s when he awakened his lightning–type ability.
But he was left with countless scars, some so deep they exposed the bone.
Chloe thought, ‘Should I go and rescue Filip?‘
If she did, she might ruin Filip’s fateful opportunity to level up.
But if she stayed put, just picturing Filip being dragged through hellish torment made her heart twist with pain.
“W–What’s wrong?” Linda stammered, startled by Chloe’s reaction.
Chloe let out a deep breath and said, “It’s nothing.”
She decided it was best not to interfere with Filip’s opportunity. If she did, he might never awaken his powers and would stay a regular person forever.
With that thought, Chloe couldn’t help but shoot a worried look at Linda and Chiara.
In her previous life, she’d only reunited with them a year into the apocalypse. By then, both of them had already awakened as water–type powered humans.
But right now, they were just ordinary people.
Chloe thought, ‘Did showing up early screw up their chance to trigger their awakening?”
Her head started to ache just thinking about it.
Chloe thought, ‘Wait, mutagenic herbs! If I can find some and use my spiritual space to refine them into mutagenic serum, there’s still hope for them.
‘But where the hell am I supposed to find mutagenic herbs now?
With no clue where to start, Chloe figured she might as well head to the Trade Market and see what she could find. Linda and Chiara had been in poor health lately, so Chloe insisted they stay at the villa and get some proper rest. Frank dragged in 300 pounds of grain and a carton of cigarettes to the registration hall, handing the goods over to the

After resting for a bit, Chloe put on her down jacket and headed straight for the Trade Market.
The Trade Market was massive: a total free–for–all, with every king
one could imagine.
Chloe glanced around and couldn’t help but feel more than a little disappointed.
The place was overflowing with people, and stalls

But everything for sale was basically worthless junk: designer purses, gold bling, and sparkly diamonds.
They were just leftover luxuries from before the apocalypse.
Food was the one thing nobody had for sale.
