Chapter 137
Among them were all sorts of luxury goods, emeralds, and designer bags.
These things weren’t food or drink, and even scavengers would give them a second glance.
Now, there was a frenzy to

To them, Chloe was just a ditzy beauty, probably obsessed with looking good and luxury stuff.
One woman could barely contain her excitement as she hurriedly took off her necklace.
“Sweetie, do you think this is worth one muffin?” she asked cagerly.

Bertha, standing nearby, caught sight of the action. Without hesitation, she shoved the woman aside and ripped off her gold bracelet.
She asked, “I spent fifty grand on this bracelet back in the day. It’s solid gold. Can I swap it for five muffins?”
Soon enough, the rest of the refugees started pulling off their own jewelry, eager to join in.
Chloe was speechless.
She said, “Look, I only want emeralds or cores, okay?”
“Seriously? All this stuff is worth a ton. Why won’t you take gold?” Bertha huffed, clearly pissed.
She got loads of gold at home.
Chloe crossed her arms, shooting Bertha a frosty glare. She shot back, “My rules. If you think it’s so valuable, go sell it to someone else.”
With that, Chloe turned and walked away, leaving Bertha behind The woman’s eyes blazed with venom as she glared daggers at Chloe’s retreating figure.
She fumed inwardly, ‘Damn little bitch. Just wait till I bring more stuff tomorrow. Let’s see how you sell it then.’
The brother and sister nearby exchanged glances, and the little girl leaned in close, whispering in her brother’s ear.
“I’ve stashed a ton of emeralds,” she murmured.
Her brother’s eyes lit up, and he asked quietly, “When did you stash them?”
The little girl’s eyes sparkled as she said, “It was every time I went out scavenging with the others. I could never beat them to the good stuff, so whenever I came up empty–handed, I’d just haul back a bag of emeralds instead.”
The boy raised an eyebrow.
The little girl said, “I have no idea if they’re real or not. They just looked nice, so I brought them back. I’ve got loads of them, all hidden away.”
The siblings spent a while plotting together, then hurriedly packed up their stall and rushed home.
Chloe was killing time at the market when she suddenly felt someone tailing her. She stopped and spun around.
She found herself staring into a pair of eyes, smoldering with emotion.
“Shawn, you’re still alive?” Chloe said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

“I was so scared I’d never see you again.
Chloe crossed her arms, sizing Shawn up from head to toe.
He was wrapped in a tattered coat, cotton stuffing spilling out everywhere. The once–white cotton was now black and crusty, all clumped together.
His hair was a mess, his face filthy, his lips and cheeks cracked and bleeding. His eyes were hollow, totally checked out.
Chloe thought, ‘Yeah, this is what the apocalypse is really all about.”
Shawn looked even worse than a starving refugee. He was a far cry from the suave guy he once was.
Chloe sneered inwardly, ‘Looking all over for me? Gross, what a phony.
Chloe’s undisguised look of disdain made Shawn wish he could disappear, but he forced a smile anyway.
He said, “Chloe, let’s get back together. In times like these, we should hold hands and get through it side by side.”
That lovesick stare and those nauseating lines almost made Chloe want to puke.
Chloe sighed dramatically, shaking her head in exasperation.
She said, “Oh, sure, I’d love to patch things up, but what do you even have to offer?”
When Shawn heard that, a smug glint flashed in his eyes.
He thought, ‘See? I knew it. She just can’t let me go. All I have to do is snap my fingers, and she’ll fall right into my arms.

He thought, ‘Those were all my supplies.
‘No way. If we ever get back together, I’m keeping all the supplies for myself. She’s way too reckless with them. I must teach
her a lesson.‘
Even though he was plotting all that in his head, his eyes stayed as tender and affectionate as ever.
“I am the best gift you could ever have. I’m giving myself to you: my heart, my love, everything I am is yours,” Shawn said. putting on his most sincere face.
The refugees nearby couldn’t help but snort with laughter.
One of them patted Shawn on the shoulder and said, “Bro, could you be any more shameless?”
Shawn’s face flushed bright red as he shouted back, “What do you know? The love between us-”
Chloe couldn’t stand it anymore. She went off on Shawn, throwing punches and kicks from all angles.
Chloe snapped, “I’ve got beauty and resources. Like I’d ever have trouble finding a man.
“You’re disgusting! Was I blind before? How did I ever like you? You make me sick. I’m gonna beat the crap out of you!”
Chloe’s explosion freaked out everyone nearby. They all just stared for a second, then wandered off numb and silent. No one

even thought about stepping in.
Three minutes later, Shawn looked like he’d gone ten rounds with a heavyweight: two black eyes, blood dripping from his nose, and his whole face covered in bruises.
Chloe leaned in close to Shawn’s car and whispered, her voice low and icy,
She said, “Shawn, you know why I didn’t kill you? So you could wallow in misery out here, suffering every hardship this world throws at you.”
All of Shawn’s hopes were shattered. He looked at her like he wanted to eat her alive. “Chloe, you bitch!” he snarled.
Chloe grabbed Shawn’s wrist and twisted it back with effortless force. There was a sickening crack, and his right arm broke instantly.
Shawn cried out in pain.
His blood–curdling scream brought the soldiers keeping order. The one in charge was the same guy who’d given Chiara his coat yesterday, Quentin.
That coat was the only decent thing he had left. Today, his military jacket looked like it’d been scavenged from a pile of corpses: filthy and falling apart.
Quentin knew exactly who Chloe was. He just shot a quick, indifferent glance at Shawn lying on the ground, then turned and walked away without a word.
He thought, ‘I didn’t see a thing.’
The soldiers trailing behind him had no clue what was going on, but they hurried after him anyway.
“Quentin, what’s going on?” one of them asked, confused.
Quentin gritted his teeth and muttered, “Don’t ask. Just keep moving.”
He thought, “That woman is the miracle doctor who saved Emery’s life. She is basically a lifesaver to the top brass in the military, and she is seriously badass. I wouldn’t dare get on her bad side.
Once the soldiers had left, Chloe slapped Shawn’s face with pure contempt.
She said, “Shawn, you see that? You’re nothing but a mutt crawling in the dirt. Nobody cares if you live or die.”
Then Chloe kicked Shawn so hard that his head split open. Blood poured down his face. She said, “Don’t let me catch you again. Every time I see you, I’ll mess you up.”
After finishing beating Shawn, Chloe felt she had finally let out all the resentment she’d been holding onto since her previous life.
She glanced down at Shawn, then dragged him out of the Trade Market like he was nothing but a worthless mutt. With chilling precision, she drew her ice sword and sliced off his arms and legs.
Shawn, who’d passed out, was wrenched awake by the agony, only to faint again. It happened over and over, leaving him trapped in a cycle of pain and darkness.
“Chloe, you vicious bitch! You’ll die a horrible death!” Shawn screamed, his voice raw with pain and hatred.
Hearing his venomous curses, Chloe suddenly broke into a cold smile. She leaned in close to his ear and spoke slowly, her voice icy.
