The place was a bloodbath.Â

Chloe remembered how, in her previous life, her arms and legs were ripped off, and she was tossed into a pot, turned into minced meat for that bastard to feast on.Â
She grinned like a maniac. She said, “Shawn, I clawed my way out of hell just to drag you down with me. This is payback.Â
“Don’t worry. I’ll be bringing Sophie to hell soon, so you two can be a pair of doomed lovers.”Â
And with those words, she marched off without looking back.Â
Her mind was finally at peace, and all her hatred faded away, like mist drifting into nothingness.Â
Shawn lay in a pool of blood, nothing but a bloody mess, his body curled up and contorted in pain.Â

Refugees crowded around, their eyes bloodshot and hungry like wolves, staring at Shawn squirming in the blood like a worm; some even licked their lips.Â
Some were gulping down their saliva.Â
They looked like starving wolves lost in the desert, eyes wild and red, ready to leap and rip Shawn to shreds.Â
But the last shred of sanity kept them from pouncing. This was the base: fighting and even killing was tolerated, but eating human flesh? That was the one thing nobody would tolerate.Â
If anyone got caught doing that, they’d be thrown out of the base for good, never allowed back in.Â
Some people looked at Chloe’s retreating figure with sympathy.Â
“She’s pretty, such a shame. Open murder isn’t allowed in the base. She’ll be caught soon enough,” someone muttered.Â
Fights broke out all the time, but when it came to killing and looting, people kept it on the down–low.Â
Most of the powered squads in the base just looked the other wayÂ
But doing something like this out in the open, and in such a savage way, was basically asking for trouble with the base’s top dogs.Â
Chloe checked out every corner of the Trade Market in Refugee District and scored quite a few good finds.Â
Feeling a bit uninterested and ready to head back, her walkie–talkie suddenly crackled.Â
“Chloe, someone from the military is looking for you. Get back here ASAP,” Frank said.Â
Chloe hung up and hurried over to Guardian District.Â
A tall, upright soldier stood in the courtyard, straight as a pine.Â
“Peyton,” Chloe called out.Â
Peyton turned, a flicker of happiness in his eyes, but he quickly masked it.Â
He said, “Captain Yates, I’m here on behalf of the military to invite you.”Â
Chloe looked uneasy. She really didn’t want to pick a side or get tangled up with anyone.Â

Peyton explained, “Captain Yates, here’s the deal. We have solid intelligence that the last mercenary squad sent to the Medical Tower is trapped inside.Â
“There are way too many zombies. They’ve burned through all their ammo, and even their rations probably won’t last much longer. We need to get them some supplies.Â
“And help them bring back the medicine.”Â
As soon as Chloe heard “Medical Tower,” she instantly got seriousÂ
“You mean two platoons of soldiers and the Snow Wolf Brigade?” Chloe asked.Â
The mercenary group worked for the base chief.Â
The Medical Tower was the hottest prize around. Everyone wanted a piece of it.Â
Peyton replied, “Exactly. We’re also joining forces with the Snow Wolf Brigade, the base chief’s people. Their leader is Elise, the base chief’s daughter.”Â
Chloe was immediately reminded of her last run–in with Elise.Â
Chloe thought, ‘Elise is a woman who’s always flirting with guys. Can she really handle leading such a big mercenary group?”Â
Peyton seemed to catch the doubt in Chloe’s eyes.Â
He said, “Actually, Elise is a space–powered human. She can store a ton of supplies. It’s less about her leading and more about the whole mercenary group being there just to keep her safe.”Â
Chloe raised an eyebrow.Â
“How many space–powered humans are you bringing?” she askedÂ
Peyton gave a wry smile and said, “Captain Yates, space–powered folks are crazy rare. Just finding one is already a huge deal.”Â
In other words, the military didn’t have a single space–powered human in their ranks.Â
Chloe thought, ‘Seriously? The almighty military getting shown up by a bunch of powered ability users?‘Â
“Why me?” Chloe asked.Â
That was the one thing she really wanted to know.Â
Sure, they lived in Guardian District, but on the surface, they were just a small powered squad. Nobody really paid them any mind.Â
Peyton flashed a cheeky grin.Â
He said, “I know you’re not someone to mess with, Captain Yates. But more importantly, you’re a space–powered human.”Â
That’s what really mattered.Â
The powered squad was already a bit stronger than the others, and now, with a space–powered human, they were even tougher.Â
Peyton thought, ‘If we don’t team up with Chloe and her crew. Even if we risk our lives and somehow make it to the Medical Tower, all those rare meds and supplies? None of it would be ours.Â
‘Back in that little village, even the mutant cheetah didn’t dare mess with Chloe.Â

Chloe and her crew are way tougher than the files said. I have seen it myself‘Â
“I need to talk it over with my team first. Let’s go inside and discuss,” Chloe said.Â
Peyton felt a wave of relief wash over him.Â
If Chloe weren’t interested, she would’ve just said no right away. Letting him inside meant there was still hope.Â
As soon as the door opened, a wave of warmth hit Peyton, making his muscles relax instantly.Â

He wasn’t too surprised. After all, his grandpa was the top dog in the base, and their place had underfloor heating too.Â
But when he spotted the fruit platter and half–caten raviolis on the table, he couldn’t help but click his tongue in surprise.Â
Peyton thought, ‘Captain Yates’s crew really knows how to live. Their food is even better than what we eat at home!Â
The team members all stood up and greeted Peyton with respectful salutes.Â
After a bit of small talk, they got down to business.Â
Peyton explained the situation again.Â
Frank paused for a moment, then spoke up honestly.Â
“We can go, but we want to split the supplies fifty–fifty,” he said.Â
Peyton sucked in a breath.Â
He thought, ‘Man, that’s gutsy.‘Â
Peyton shot back, “No way.Â
“The military’s putting in a ton of manpower and resources, and we’ve got to feed everyone in the base. There’s no way we can split the haul fifty–fifty.”Â
Emily chimed in, “Mr. Klein, you know that in a fight, it’s the strongest who decide the outcome. Your top guys are only tier three, right?”Â
Peyton nodded without hesitation.Â
He said, “Right now, the strongest powered humans are just tier three. But out of our tens of thousands of troops, we’ve only got five or six who just reached tier three.Â
“Meanwhile, the powered squads already have over a dozen, and they’ve even got space–powered users.”Â
It was only because Elise was a space–powered human that her dad had gotten such a firm grip on the base chief position.Â
Frank and others glanced at each other, and like they’d rehearsed it, stood up together, letting their powers explode out.Â
For a second, it felt like the villa’s roof was about to fly off.Â
Peyton fell back on his butt, eyes popping out of his head.Â
“You… you… you…” he stammered.Â
Mindy shot back, her voice icy, “We’re all maxed out at tier two. Noah’s already tier four, and the mutant cheetah’s tier four.Â
too.”Â
Sometimes, one gotta flex a little if one wanted people to take one seriously.Â

They kept Chloe’s real strength under wraps. Not just because they didn’t totally trust the military, but also so they’d have an ace up their sleeve if things ever got dicey.Â
