Lucian nervously rubbed his hands together, nodding stiffly.

“I’m Lucian Dawson. I swear, I’ve always played by the rules, never done anything bad. W–What do you want with me?” he stammered, voice shaky. 

Lucian was so scared that his whole body was trembling. 

He was the breadwinner for his family. If anything happened to him, his mom and kid would be done for. 

Before Lucas could say a word, Thomas strode over with his head held high and gave Lucian a crisp salute. 

“Do you know Chiara Yates?” Thomas asked. 

Lucian nodded honestly. “Chiara’s a good kid. Is she in some kind of trouble?” 

Thomas knew he’d found the right guy and pulled out a piece of paper. 

“By order of the higher–ups, Lucian, you’ve proven yourself hardworking and honest. You’re being transferred to the Botanic Gardens. Your pay is ten loaves of bread, a box of pasta, and two bottles of water a day,” he announced in a firm voice. 

“W–What?‘ Lucian was so stunned by this incredible turn of events that he just stood there, frozen. 

“Are you sure you didn’t mix me up with someone else?” he asked in disbelief. 

Thomas, also worried he might’ve got the wrong guy, double–checked. 

“Did you often help Chiara carry bricks? And did you sneak her a cookie once?” he asked. 

Lucian was completely lost. ‘Wait, how does he even know about that?‘ 

Then he remembered that night when Chiara left, flanked by soldiers and some powered humans. 

Even a blockhead like him could put two and two together now. 

“Yeah, and I was the one who showed the soldiers where to find Chiara that night,” Lucian replied. 

Thomas’s face softened. “Then you’re exactly who we’re looking for. 

“Pack up whatever you need. I’ll take you over to the Botanic Gardens to get you settled.” 

After the apocalypse, the Botanic Gardens were nothing like before. Now, it was a massive greenhouse complex, with scientists and researchers busy figuring out how to grow veggies in this new world. 

The staff there just had to watch the vegetables and record how they grew each day. In return, they scored generous rations and supplies. 

Most of the people allowed in were folks who had connections, like the relatives of top officials. 

Lucian wiped his rough hands, tears of joy rolling down his cheeks. “I’ll come with you right now.” 

Lucas was left completely dumbfounded. 

He was a sharp guy. It didn’t take him long to figure out that Chiara was someone with serious connections. 

‘She could waltz Lucian into the Botanic Gardens without lifting a finger. How powerful is the force behind her?‘ he thought.

“Idiot! That girl’s so pretty; she must’ve been pampered her whole life. How could I not have seen that?” he muttered to himself. 

If he’d known, he would’ve tried his best to suck her up. 

In the refugee camp, a scruffy man slipped his hand into the pocket of the person next to him, trying to steal a piece of grass cake. 

Suddenly, a crowd burst in, with Chiara and Molly right in the middle of the commotion. 

The two girls were the same age, looking like they’d stepped out of a storybook with their pink puffer jackets and white hats. 

In a place full of starving refugees, they couldn’t have looked more out of place. 

Frank, Emily, Mindy, and the rest of the Blaze Squad followed right behind them. 

The refugees parted to let them through, their eyes filled with both envy and fear as they watched the group pass by.

Although Chiara had been living in the refugee camp for more than half a month, her face was caked with mud thanks to Lucian, making her almost unrecognizable to most people. 

But since she looked spotless when she first showed up, a few folks who’d known her from the beginning recognized her right away. 

One of the folks called out, “Chiara?” 

The refugees nearby exchanged confused glances and began to whisper among themselves. 

“You mean that girl who’s always filthy? Seriously? There’s no way that’s the same kid.” 

“It really is her. When she first arrived, she looked adorable and nearly got trafficked a couple times. Lucian took pity on her and smeared mud on her face so no one would notice her. That’s how she avoided trouble.” 

“Man, who would’ve guessed she had such crazy connections? Yesterday, she even stirred up the two biggest powers at the base.” 

Remembering what went down yesterday, the refugees instinctively stepped back. 

The ones who’d never had anything to do with Chiara were secretly kicking themselves. ‘Why didn’t I try to cozy up to that little princess when I had the chance?‘ they thought. 

Those who’d ever tried to mess with her or bullied her and Filip shrank back, wishing they could crawl into a rat hole and disappear. 

Chiara instantly spotted Pete in the crowd, the one who’d tried to sell her off more than once, 

“Pete, where are you going?” she called out, her voice sharp and cold. 

Pete froze, his eyes darting nervously to Frank and the others, his legs shaking so hard he could barely stand. 

“C–Chiara, why are you back?” he stammered, his voice trembling. 

Chiara gave him a witchy grin. “I came looking for you.” 

Molly frowned, “So you’re the old geezer who stole Chiara’s food and even tried to sell her?”

Pete spun around to run, but a streak of silver energy flashed by hitting him out of nowhere. 

He grabbed his head and let out a miserable howl. “It hurts! My head hurts so bad!”

After that, Chiara rampaged through the refugee camp, tracking down everyone who’d ever bullied her and made sure they all got a serious beatdown. 

Molly looked puzzled. “Chiara, why didn’t you finish them off?” 

“Huh?” Chiara stared, a bit embarrassed. 

Honestly, the harshest thing she could come up with was roughing people up. 

Molly sighed. ‘Looks like she’ll need some time to toughen up.’ 

At the border between the Guardian District and the Wild District, Quentin, wearing worn–out military fatigues, trudged home after a grueling day, lugging his daily meal pack. 

He barely stepped inside before his wife, Maria, greeted him with a scolding. “You still haven’t gotten your winter coat back?” 

He scratched his head, embarrassed. “Uh, I kinda forgot.” 

He had wanted to ask about it as he saw Chloe. But after seeing all that blood and violence, he couldn’t bring himself to say a word. 

Maria stomped her foot angrily. “Honey, you know we’ve only got two winter coats in this house. You gave yours to that little girl, so you’ll have to wear mine. But what about me?” 

She was bundled up in a blanket, wearing thermal clothes underneath. Still, she shivered violently in the freezing cold, lips blue from the chill. 

“I’m sorry,” Quentin said softly, guilt heavy in his voice. 

Maria let out a long sigh. “Whatever. Get inside before you freeze out there.” 

Just as they turned to head inside, a few soldiers came over with a transfer order. 

“Congratulations, Quentin!” one of them said with a grin. 

Maria looked confused. “What’s going on?” 

The soldiers chuckled, “Quentin’s been picked by the higher–ups He’s getting transferred to the Guardian District’s patrol team.” 

The patrol team was there to keep folks in the Guardian District safe, especially those living in the upscale communities. 

It might look like a regular gig on the surface, but it was actually a cushy job with plenty of perks and under–the–table goodies. 

Lots of powered human squads lived there with their whole families. But there was no way they could drag everyone along when heading out on missions. 

So whenever they left, they’d hand over some supplies on the sly to the patrol team, making sure their loved ones got a little extra attention while they were gone. 

Maria was over the moon. “Thank you! And thank the higher–up for giving Quentin this chance!”
