Emily gulped down the glass of red wine, and suddenly she felt an overwhelming wave of discomfort crashing over her—she couldn’t hold it in anymore and burst into tears. 

She pressed her hand against her chest, feeling a chaotic mess inside, her heart pounding with intense panic and distress. 

Right at that moment, her phone rang. 

She glanced down and saw it was Ryan calling. 

Actually, it wasn’t that late yet—just a little past eleven. 

Emily worried that Ryan might notice something was wrong with her emotions, so she quickly composed herself before answering. “Ryan.” 

She tried to make her voice sound normal, but a hint of her pain still slipped through. 

Ryan could tell she was upset, but he didn’t call her out on it. Instead, he just asked, “It’s getting late–why aren’t you home yet? Molly’s been waiting up for you.” 

The thought that her niece was more concerned about her than her own daughter pierced Emily’s heart with another sharp pang of hurt. 

She paused for a second before saying, “Ryan, Sophie’s sick. I

Ryan didn’t sound convinced, but he didn’t push it. He hesitated, then simply said, “There’s a package for you at the

That reminded Emily of the bracelet Alexander had mentioned. “Can you help me sign for it?” she asked. 

Ryan replied with a simple “Sure.” 

The two of them fell silent on the line. 

Emily was about to say goodbye, but Ryan suddenly asked, “Emily, tell me the truth. Did Ethan force you to do something?” 

“No,” Emily answered almost immediately. 

Her arrangement with Ethan wasn’t really forced. 

Sophia was also her child. She had a responsibility to take care 

of her. 

After she said that, they went quiet again. 

Finally, Emily said she was going to hang up. 

After hanging up, Emily washed the wine glass thoroughly and put it back in its place.

With that, she started to walk past him. 

“Wait,” Ethan called out to stop her. 

Emily halted but didn’t turn around. She just asked, “What else do you want?” 

Her mind started racing with wild thoughts again. 

She figured that back in the study, Ethan and Nancy probably couldn’t resist each other and had ended up being intimate right 

there.

Now, Nancy was likely exhausted and fast asleep.

She was about to lift her foot and leave, but Ethan spoke up again. “This weekend is my grandfather’s birthday.” 

Emily was caught off guard. She had almost forgotten- Matthew’s birthday was coming. 

In the Wilson family, only Matthew had ever stood up for her and protected her.

Julian’s parties, on the other hand, included lots of friends of the family. 

Compared to that, Emily preferred preparing for Matthew’s birthday. 

For one thing, Matthew truly cared about her and treated her kindly. For another, she already knew everyone’s dietary restrictions in the Wilson family by heart, so she didn’t have to look them up. 

After a long pause, Emily finally murmured softly, “I know.” 

No matter why Ethan was reminding her, she didn’t care. 

She would definitely prepare for Matthew’s birthday, but this year, she wouldn’t put in as much effort as she had before. 

As if worried she hadn’t understood clearly, Ethan added, “My grandfather wants to eat the dishes you make.”
