Chapter 148 

David was a bit skeptical, but when he saw Chloe’s gorgeous face with those pleading eyes looking up at him. he instantly understood why Tristan had acted that way, 

He thought, ‘She must’ve tempted Tristan. 

David didn’t doubt Molly’s words for a second. 

He shot a look at his buddy, who immediately got the message. 

During the zombie–killing part, David’s squad fell behind and trailed after Chloe and her crew. 

“What are you doing? Hurry up. The main group’s getting farther away,” Chloe said, pretending to be scared. 

As the main group was some distance away, David and his dozens of men blocked Chloe and the others, shamelessly crowding in. 

“Hey, you must’ve been scared out there, huh? Those soldiers don’t know how to treat a lady right. Don’t worry. I’ll protect you,” David grinned. 

His smile was full of malice, and his eyes practically oozed greed. 

Chloe smiled charmingly, her voice lilting and melodious like a songbird’s call. 

“Thank you. You’re such gentlemen,” she replied sweetly. 

After three seconds, Chloe and her crew caught up with the main group again. But naturally, they were still stuck at the very back. 

This kept happening over and over. 

The official powered humans were shameless. Whenever a horde of zombies appeared, they always let the soldiers rush in first and then hung back to take advantage of the situation. 

They snatched up most of the zombie cores lying around before the soldiers even had a chance to collect them. 

The soldiers were so pissed they could barely keep themselves from gunning those powered humans down on the spot. 

But even though these powered humans were strong and totally shameless, their group was getting smaller, and they had no clue why. 

When they stopped to rest at the five–star mall and did a headcount, everyone was completely lost. 

“Huh? How did we suddenly lose over two hundred members out of nowhere?” a powered guy blurted out. 

During the whole time, they hadn’t lifted a finger. They’d just been chilling behind the soldiers, waiting to scoop up zombie cores.

Meanwhile, Chloe, Noah, and the others found a quiet corner and sat down. Chloe patted her backpack, which was bulging with mutant cores. 

Wow, those official powered humans are just so generous. Not only did they shield us from zombies, but they even went out of their way to hand over all those hard–earned cores to us. What absolute saints, she thought. 

They pulled out a bunch of cores and started absorbing them “gratefully.” 

Felix glanced around, his face dark with anger. 

“Where the hell did our people go? Somebody find out what happened, now!” he snapped, giving Chloe a suspicious glance. 

Ever since his real strength was revealed in that fight with Chloe, he’d been unexpectedly bumped up to lead the Awakened Group. 

And he was now teamed up with another group leader for this mission. 

As the boss, he had his hands full. Not only did he have to keep a close eye on Elise, who was a magnet for trouble, but he also had to deal with all the group’s drama and logistics. 

When he finally realized something was off, only fewer than 400 of the original 600 powered guys were left standing. 

Charles leaned in and murmured something to Felix. 

Instantly, Felix’s eyes locked onto Chloe with a deadly glare, like he was ready to skin her alive. 

Chloe could feel that deadly vibe coming off Felix, but she just looked up and flashed him a chilling grin. Then, with zero fear, she made a throat–slitting gesture right at him. 

Felix shot to his feet, so pissed he nearly lost it, ready to take her out on the spot. 

But then he remembered he wasn’t a match for her, and he still had a mission to finish. After a few deep breaths, he barely managed to keep his cool. 

He turned to Charles and said seriously, “Spread the word on the down–low. From now on, nobody goes anywhere near anyone from the Blaze Squad.” 

With that, he strode off toward the other powered human leader. 

He never imagined that just one slip–up would cost over two hundred of his men their lives. 

‘Chloe, you bitch, I swear I won’t let you get away with this!‘ he thought, his hatred burning. 

As if she could read Felix’s mind, Chloe mouthed the word “trash” at him, taunting him without a sound. 

Felix was so mad his heart nearly burst out of his chest. 

Just then, William, the military leader, called out, “Alright, everyone, take a half–hour break and grab a bite.” 

Chapter 148 

All the soldiers unslung their backpacks and pulled out some compressed biscuits and a small block of ice wrapped in a plastic bag. 

The temperature was so low that any water in a bottle would freeze solid in seconds, making it impossible to drink when they needed it. 

So they froze the water into little ice cubes and stored them in plastic bags, making them easy to carry around. 

Meanwhile, all the powered humans looked toward Elise. 

Elise shot William a provocative look. “Oh, come on, what’s so great about being a soldier? Just look at your grub…you guys eating garbage or what?” 

With a wave of her hand, a bunch of pasta and even some self–heating dishes popped up right in front of her. 

Back before the apocalypse, this kind of food would’ve been considered pretty basic. But now, it was like heaven on earth. 

As expected, the soldiers got mocked yet again. 

“Alright, alright, they’re soldiers anyway. Let’s at least pretend to give them some face. If anyone’s got leftovers, maybe toss them a few scraps,” Elise said, brushing a stray lock of hair from her cheek. 

A powered guy laughed, “Exactly! Anyone here not that hungry? Save some leftovers for the poor soldiers.” 

“Pathetic, being a soldier and ending up like this,” another jeered. 

Every word was laced with ridicule for the soldiers. 

Renee glanced at Chloe, who gave her a nod. Rocking her black armored vest, Renee walked right up to William. 

“Hey, you guys have been working your asses off. Lunch is on me today,” she said. 

As soon as she said that, the powered humans cracked up. 

“You’re treating? With that tiny backpack, you couldn’t even feed ten people,” one of them mocked. 

Elise snorted, her laughter full of disdain. “She thinks she’s space–powered, huh?” 

William looked at Renee and said, “Thanks for your kindness, but please return to your group.” 

Without a word, Renee pulled out a massive blanket from her backpack. Emily and Mindy, quick on the uptake, jumped in to help her spread it out. 

That just made the powered humans crack up even more. 

“Well, well, is she about to put on a magic show or something?” one of them snickered. 

“What are you gonna do? Make someone pop out of thin air, or maybe whip up a feast?” another jeered.

Renee brushed off their jeers and, with a casual wave, made a whole feast appear right on the blanket. 

There were bread rolls, giant muffins, steak, and everything looked absolutely delicious. 

As soon as the food appeared, the mouthwatering aroma flooded the entire building. Suddenly, the powered humans‘ pasta tasted like nothing in comparison. 

Elise might be a space–powered human, but her ability was pretty lame, basically just a walking storage locker. She couldn’t attack, and her space couldn’t even keep food hot. 

Compared to hers, Renee’s spiritual space was on a whole other level in everyone’s eyes. 

Honestly, her space couldn’t keep stuff hot either, and most of what she had stashed was just junk food. But when they arrived at the mall, Chloe had somehow managed to dump a ton of supplies into her space. 

That totally blew Renee’s mind. 

“Alright, everyone gets two bread rolls, two muffins, a whole slab of steak, and a cup of warm water,” Renee announced with a grin. 

Everyone stared, mouths watering, and the powered humans all swallowed hungrily. 

The soldiers kept their cool on the outside, but secretly, they were swallowing quietly. 

All eyes turned to William.
