Under the circumstances earlier, Emily had no way to escape. If Alexander had applied even a little force, he could have easily pinned her. 

Alexander smiled, a glint hidden behind his expression. “You’re avoiding me,” he said. 

Emily froze, momentarily at a loss for words. 

She wasn’t close to Alexander at all. To her, he’d always seemed like an unreliable scoundrel. Yet now, hearing him speak like that, she felt oddly lost. 

After a long, awkward pause, Alexander finalised back, creating some space between them. “Go home. I’ll have the new jewelry delivered tomorrow night.” 

Emily opened her mouth to protest, but Alexander cut her off again. “If you don’t want to wear what I give you, I’ll just keep sending more.” 

They held each other’s gaze for a long moment, and Emily didn’t answer his words. 

She got out of the car, but unease gnawed at her.

“Ryan, it’s not what you think,” she blurted, her voice edged with urgency. But then, she reconsidered her words and added, “Either way, I’ll listen to what you all say.” 

Ryan glanced over his shoulder, noticing the faint redness rimming her eyes. His voice softened. “Alright.”
