Chapter 161Â
Chloe shot him a teasing look and stretched out her words, “Oh, I see how it is. You two are just foo shy to admit itÂ
The guy got all flustered. “No, seriously, there’s nothing going on between us.”Â
“Yeah, right, nothing going on at all,” Chloe said, clearly not buying it.Â
He kept trying to explain, but the more he talked, the deeper the hole he dug for himself.Â
Ramon was so pissed that he could’ve socked him right then. ‘Damn, this guy really can’t keep his mouth shut, he thought.Â
He quickly changed the subject.Â
“Young lady, are you staying at the base too? With Filip?” Ramon asked.Â
He knew Filip lived in the refugee camp down in the underground city.Â
But for a girl as pretty as Chloe to have survived so long in a place crawling with all kinds of shady characters and still be untouched.Â
It really made him wonder.Â
Ever since the apocalypse hit, Ramon had hooked up with at least fifty women, maybe even a hundred. He could spot a virgin from a mile away.Â
“Honestly, I’m a local. I’ve got a little shack in the Refugee District. If you don’t mind, you and your family can crash with me,” Ramon said.Â
If any other woman heard that offer, she’d probably throw herself at him right then and there.Â
Just having a roof over your head was a luxury most refugees could only dream ofÂ
People disappeared from the refugee camp every single day, folks were starving left and right, and at night, everyone was freezing, just hoping to survive till morning.Â
And plenty of people just went to sleep and never woke up again.Â
But having a house changed everything. One could sleep in a real bed, under a blanket. Even if it was still freezing, at least one didn’t have to worry about closing their eyes and never waking up.Â
Ramon’s usual lines always worked. He figured Chloe would give him that look, half envy, half awe. But all he got was a flat, one–word reply. “Oh.”Â
Ramon blinked.Â
Oh? Really? Did she even hear me?‘ Ramon thought, shooting a look at his friend, who immediately caught on.Â
“Hey, young lady, Ramon’s got a place of his own, you know,” one of his men added.Â
Chloe was suddenly annoyed. She didn’t bother with them anymore and sent a mental command to Phantom Zombie.Â
Ramon was about to make his move when, out of nowhere, he got kicked from behind and went tumbling down the stairs.Â
“Ramon!” the guy beside him shouted.Â
A few scavengers nearby, startled, rushed down the stairs to help him up.Â
Chapter 161Â
Ramon finally managed to get to his feet, his head sporting several big bumps from the fall.Â
“Who the hell kicked me?” he shouted.Â
No one answered.Â
With all the soldiers around, Ramon didn’t dare make a scene. So he tried to get close to Chloe again, hoping to win herÂ
over.Â
Suddenly, a figure appeared between them. Noah stared him down, his eyes cold and deadly.Â
“She’s mine. Come near her again, and you’re dead,” Noah said coldly.Â
A powerful aura burst out from him, and Ramon nearly wet himself in fear.Â
Ramon might act all tough around the scavengers, but when he ran into someone with real power, he turned into a total. coward.Â
As Ramon left, he shot Chloe one last greedy look, still unwilling to give up.Â
‘I should’ve known. A babe like her? No way she’s single, Ramon thought.Â
He glanced at Filip, his face twisting with malice. “This kid’s gotta die,‘ he thought. ‘If he rats me out to that scary guy later, I’m totally screwed.‘Â
‘And who the hell is that guy, anyway?‘ he wondered.Â
All the way down, Ramon’s mind was spinning. By the time they reached the bottom, an officer walked over.Â
He gave Chloe a military salute. “Captain Yates, where should we head?”Â
The scavengers were left gaping in shock.Â
‘Wait, what? She’s actually a captain? In the army?‘ They thought, totally floored.Â
Up until now, the scavengers never thought Chloe was anything special. They figured she was just a token captain, probably only got the gig because Noah pulled some strings for her.Â
But what happened next blew their minds even more.Â
To Chloe, these scavengers were nothing but bugs she could squash without a second thought. If Filip hadn’t wanted to settle the score himself, she would’ve finished them off on the spot.Â
Besides, these guys were pure filth. The way they looked at people was nasty, their breath stank to high heaven; bet they’ve snuck on human flesh before.Â
People like that were the dregs of humanity. Taking them out was doing everyone a favor.Â
She glanced over at Emily and Molly.Â
Molly pointed to the right. “I think that way’s safer.”Â
Emily nodded, too. “There are more zombies on the right, but they’re all just second–level. We can take them out easily.”Â
“On the left, there aren’t many zombies, but every single one is at least third–level, and each has its own turf,” she added.Â
Everyone turned to Chloe, waiting for her to decide which way to go.Â
“We’ll take the shortcut and get to the Medical Tower as quickly as possible,” Chloe said.Â
Chapter 161Â
Once we’re there, we’ll rescue the people first, then take care of the zombies afterward.Â
Emily immediately said, “Then let’s take the path with more zombies”Â
Emily pointed to the left.Â
William heard that and gave the order for the troops to move out.Â
Ramon, trailing behind, was dumbfounded. He exchanged glances with the scavengers beside him, and they all saw the same fear in each other’s eyes.Â
Anyone still alive by now was either street–smart or ruthless. Just a few words, and they could already figure out most of what was happening.Â
This gorgeous girl was definitely not someone you wanted to mess with,Â
“Ramon, are we still gonna try for her?” one of the guys asked, watching her walk away with a look of regret.Â
Ramon shot him a fierce glare. “Why don’t you go try it yourself?”Â
The guy shrank back, not daring to say another word.Â
As they moved forward, the soldiers led the way, their machine guns never stopping. The ground was littered with zombies.Â
“Ramon, they’re digging out zombie cores. Should we sneak a few for ourselves?” one of theÂ
scavengers said.Â
Ramon nodded.Â
“There are so many dead zombies on the road, the soldiers won’t care if we grab a few cores,” he said.Â
They couldn’t wait any longer. They started digging for zombie cores right away.Â
By now, one hardly saw any normal zombies. Most of the ones left were just first–level.Â
There had to be at least three thousand zombies lying all over the road, maybe even five thousand.Â
“Ramon, with all these zombie cores, we’re gonna make a killing this time,” one of the scavengers said, grinning from ear toÂ
ear..Â
One first–level zombie core could get you fifty cakes or five bottles of water. That was enough to keep them fed for ages.Â
But before they could even start celebrating, they were left dumbfounded/Â
Right in the middle of the group, a little girl and a boy, both about seven or eight, were pushing a small cart.Â
It was Molly and Filip.Â
The soldiers dumped all the zombie cores they’d just dug out into the cart.Â
“Ramon, what do we do? Looks like we have to turn them in,” one of the scavengers whispered.Â
When the cart rolled up to them, they reluctantly pulled out just one core, trying to hold onto the rest.Â
Peyton’s eyes widened, and he reached right into their arms, yanking out the dozen or so cores they were still hiding.Â
“This is your warning! Since you’re getting protection and food from the army, you need to turn in every single zombie core, no exceptions. Don’t try to play games! Otherwise, get lost,” Peyton snapped.Â
The scavengers shrank back, nodding frantically. “Yes, sir! We’ll do exactly as you say!”
