Chapter 164Â
The next moment, Elise’s throat was damped tight, and a face loomed suddenly into view.Â
Chloe’s grip tightened around Elise’s neck, her words cold and deliberate: “You want to kill me?”Â
Elise was just an ordinary space–powered human, powerless to fight back. With Chloe’s grip crushing her throat, Elise’s face flushed crimson.Â
“W–what are you doing?” Elise choked out.Â
Chloe suddenly let out a twisted smile, cold and eerie, like a blood–red rose blooming in the dead of winter.Â
Chloe’s voice dripped with mockery. “I thought I’d play a little joke on you, too.”Â
Elise felt death staring her in the face, panic finally crashing over her. “No, someone help me, please.Â
“Y–you can’t kill me. I–I’m-” Elise stammered, desperation clawing at her throat.Â
With a brutal snap, Chloe broke Elise’s neck.Â
Elise’s head lolled forward, her body suddenly lifeless, all traces of vitality gone in an instant.Â
Chloe had originally wanted to get rid of Elise quietly, but she was just too damn irritating. No way was Chloe going to let a loaded gun aimed at her back stay alive.Â
William stood there, utterly shocked, his jaw quivering as his mind raced with worry and confusion.Â
‘Did Elise just die? Just like that?‘ William’s thoughts spun wildly, struggling to make sense of what he’d just seen.Â
“Captain Yates, you killed Elise. The base chief won’t let you off the hook for this. Once the mission’s done, I’ll have Graham quietly get your team out of the base,” William said, urgency in his voice.Â
“Get out of there fast. Whatever you do, don’t come back to the base,” he added.Â
With that, William turned to the comms officer at his side and ordered, “Send an urgent message to the base, right now.”Â
Chloe didn’t say a word. She whipped out a knife and, without a hint of hesitation, sliced Elise’s throat as she lay on the ground.Â
In the blink of an eye, a hundred cubic worth of supplies burst forth, food, guns, ammo, and even zombie cores scattered everywhere.Â
Everyone gasped in shock.Â
‘Holy crap, Elise was hoarding all this?‘ they all thought, completely stunned.Â
Chloe waved her hand, and all the supplies vanished into her spiritual space. She glanced over at Felix and James, who were still fighting up ahead.Â
She lowered her voice, almost conspiratorial. “Major York, have you ever thought about knocking the base chief off his pedestal?”Â
William’sÂ
eyes widened. “You mean?”Â
They exchanged a look, no words needed. They were already on the same page.Â
Soon, the battle up ahead was winding down. Every last zombie had been wiped out, and everyone was busy digging outÂ
Chapter 164Â
zombie cores and cleaning up the battlefieldÂ
Chloe had snagged a ton of cores without even breaking a sweat, and she was feeling pretty darm pleased win herwell.Â
James walked over and handed Chloe two third–level zombie cores. As soon as he got clow, he immediately seniorij something was wrong.Â
Wait, where’s Elise? James thought, his heart skipping a beat. Crap!Â
He spun around and saw Felix and a dozen other powered humans completely surrounded.Â
Sniper rifles were trained on them; one wrong move, and they’d be turned into cheese,Â
“William, you bastard! What the hell did you do?” Felix roared, his eyes blazing with fury.Â
Out of the dozen or so powered humans, everyone except James had terror written all over their faces.Â
Dallas was the sharpest and quickest to react in the whole group.Â
She bowed without hesitation. “I, Dallas, want to join the military squad. From now on, I’ll fight for the people, even if it costs me my life.Â
James cupped his fists respectfully toward William.Â
“Major York, I, James, am willing to join the military as well,” he said, his tone calm and steady.Â
James was the strongest in the Awakened Group, and the base chief had been quietly undermining him for a long time.Â
If not for that, he wouldn’t have just watched as the six hundred–strong Awakened Group got wiped out because of that fool.Â
‘Good. Now that they’re all dead, the base chief’s got no one left to use, he’ll have to depend on me, James thought.Â
That was the last thing James expected that the military would actually dare to kill Elise.Â
‘From the looks of it, Captain Yates was the one who did the deed. William just got dragged into this mess, James figured.Â
Thinking back to that Frostbeast incident, he hadn’t seen the fight himself, but surviving and escaping from a mutant Frostbeast that strong? That was seriously impressive.Â
The Blaze Squad was no joke. Even that captain who looked like he couldn’t hurt a fly might actually be tougher than me.Â
Plus, the military had real power and a good rep. At least he didn’t have to worry about getting betrayed.Â
So, James went along and sided with the military as well.Â
With James making his choice, the rest of the powered humans fell in line one after another, throwing their lot in with the military.Â
‘Follow him, and we will thrive; stand against him, and we are finished, James wondered.Â
They were just a ragtag group thrown together by the apocalypse. The moment anyone’s interests clashed, any sense of unity they’d managed to build would fall apart in a heartbeat.Â
Not like the army, where everyone’s got the same beliefs and sticks together no matter what.Â
Besides, for this mission, the base chief had sent out almost all his powered humans.Â
Now that Elise was dead, James’s strength was seriously weakened; he was no match for the military anymore.Â

Hearing this, William cracked a smile.Â
Zombie blood still streaked his tough face, giving him a grim, thoughtful look.Â
We may not have a ton of powered humans in the military, but we don’t just let anyone in William said, his tone legÂ
“People like you, who can turn on a dime? We’re not about to use folks like that.”Â
Powered humans were tough, but if you put them in high positions, they’d start getting ambitious or plotting somethingÂ
On the flip side, if one suppressed them too much, the backlash would be brutalÂ
Chloe suddenly walked over and whispered something in his car, and a spark of inspiration lit up William’s face.Â
Suddenly, it hit him. Why hadn’t I thought of that before?‘ William thought.Â
William turned to James and Felix. “If you want to join us, you’ll have to do something first. Think of it as your entry fee.Â
Everyone felt a sinking feeling; this couldn’t be good.Â
No one said a word. They just stared at William, not daring to make a sound.Â
“It’s simple. When we get back to the base, you know what to say and what not to say. Got it?” William said, his voice cold and sharp.Â
James immediately understood. “Got it,” he said, keeping his tone even.Â
James kept his face blank, but inside, his thoughts were in chaos.Â
‘So the military’s finally making their move!‘ James realized, adrenaline surging.Â
“Good. Once this is done, you can form your own powered human teams at the base. You’ll do missions and get supplies, just like you always did,” William said.Â
The dozen or so powered humans all readily agreed.Â
But Felix kept his eyes lowered, something unreadable and secretive flickering in them, like a snake hiding in the darkness, waiting for its chance to strike.Â
Chloe gave him a calm, knowing glance, saying nothing. She was well aware of what was going on.Â
Not far away, lightning flashed across the sky, then vanished just as quickly. ‘Is that a lightning–type ability?‘ Chloe wondered.Â
She smirked. ‘Looks like Filip’s powers finally kicked in, she thought.Â
“Chloe! I got powers!” Filip’s excited voice rang out from not far away.Â
His powers had just kicked in, and he still couldn’t control them. Purple lightning crackled around his fingertips.Â
Mindy’s pretty face was a little singed, and she was keeping her distance from him. Looked like she’d gotten zapped by accident.Â
Lightning powers were one of the strongest abilities out there. Filip had just awakened, and he’d already left Mindy, a late- stage second–level powered human, looking all disheveled. That said it all.Â
Filip looked at Mindy, guilt all over his face. “Sorry, I swear I didn’t mean it.”Â
He’d just wanted to take Mindy’s hand and walk away, but the lightning just went off by itself.Â

Mindy shot him a playful glare. “I know you didn’t do it on purpose. Otherwise, I’d totally tough you up.Â
As she said that, she raised her list, pretending to threaten him.Â
Filip just scratched his head, looking all sheepish.Â
