Chapter 170 

William bowed deeply to Chloe, then gave a military salute before leading his team back the way they came. 

Now, James, Felix, and the other dozen or so powered humans all knew just how formidable Chloe was. None of them dared to return to the base and turn against her. 

They were all sharp operators, fully aware of what would happen if they rebelled. Even if they managed to gain a temporary victory back at the base, it would be their death sentence the moment Chloe returned. 

And when Chloe came back, that would be the end for them. 

Besides, the rest of the Blaze Squad were no pushovers either. 

With the Blaze Squad joining the fray, the military scored a decisive victory in this rescue mission. 

All the powered humans loyal to the base chief who were trapped inside the Medical Tower were eliminated. 

Once everyone had left, the place fell silent, leaving only Chloe, Noah, and Spotty behind. 

They watched as the hospital building trembled slightly, about once every five seconds, as if it were perched atop the heart of some colossal beast. 

With every breath the beast took, everything in the building would shake along with it. 

Chloe wasn’t in any rush to fight. Instead, she led Noah and Spotty to the big dining hall where the military had been stationed before. 

Even though the Frost Zombie King was dead, the icy crust that had clung to the outside of the dining hall still stood, radiating a chilling aura. 

“Let’s go over there and rest for a day,” Chloe said. 

They made their way up to the ninth floor, the topmost level. To avoid any surprise attacks, they decided to stay in a room together for now. It was a big room with two beds. 

Out of nowhere, Noah’s face turned bright red. 

When he realized Chloe hadn’t come over yet, he quickly lowered his head, pretending to look for something, trying to act like nothing was wrong. 

But when he looked up, he saw Chloe already sitting on his bed. 

Noah’s lips trembled slightly, his pupils shrank, his heart was pounding, and his legs felt a little weak. 

Spotty rolled his eyes. 

Spotty thought to itself, ‘Pathetic.‘ 

“Why are you just standing there? Give me your hand,” Chloe said with a frown. Noah got skills, but man, sometimes he was such an airhead. 

Seriously, that clueless vibe totally clashes with his icy, untouchable look. 

“Huh? You want me to reach out my hand?” Noah stammered, caught off guard. 

Usually, whenever they were together, there were always other people around and plenty of space between them, so he never thought much about it.

But now, with just the two of them sitting so close, there was barely any space between them, and his heart was pounding like crazy. His brain just froze, and he started overthinking everything. 

For a moment, he couldn’t help but get a little flustered, 

“I said, give me your hand. What are you daydreaming about?” Chloe pressed, sounding a bit impatient. 

“Oh, uh, right,” Noah mumbled, flustered. 

Noah thought to himself, ‘Man, Chloe seems to be about to blow up! He ducked his head and quickly offered his hand. 

Smack! 

Noah’s hand got slapped away, and it actually stung a bit. 

He looked up with a pitiful expression, only to meet Chloe’s annoyed glare. 

She gave his head another firm smack, making him feel even more aggrieved. 

“I told you to give me your hand so I could check your injuries. Where exactly were you reaching?” Chloe snapped, her eyes flashing with irritation. 

Chloe shot him a glare, her cheeks flushed, and Noah couldn’t tell if it was from anger or embarrassment. 

‘Seriously, his hand almost landed on my chest. What a creep,‘ Chloe thought, her cheeks burning. 

Only then did Noah realize what he’d done. He awkwardly offered his hand again, feeling a little disappointed. 

Feeling awkward as hell, Noah turned and glared daggers at Spotty. 

Spotty froze. 

Spotty thought to itself, ‘Wow, look at you, Mr. Noble. Got smacked by your crush, and now you’re taking it out on me? 

‘Oh come on, Noah. You are so smart, so fierce, so totally unstoppable! When are you finally gonna get your memories back? I’m seriously stressing out over here.’ 

Noah had no idea what Spotty was thinking. All he could feel was Chloe’s cool, gentle fingertips brushing against his wrist, making his heart race out of control. 

Chloe could hear his heartbeat thundering from across the room. 

She gave him a quick look, her ears burning red. 

Chloe sighed inwardly. 

Noah was honestly a total powerhouse, a strong man with real skills, and he even had a mutant beast tagging along. 

But it was never going to happen between them. 

He was still an amnesiac stranger to her; for all she knew, he could wake up one day and forget she ever existed. 

Truth was, Chloe never planned on settling down with anyone. Being a badass loner for life sounded just fine to her. 

With no feelings and no weaknesses, Chloe was all about survival and self–interest. 

She’d never be so naive again, pinning all her hopes on a man as she did in her previous life. 

Even with all this sweet tension, with a guy this strong and loyal sneaking glances at her, and he was drop–dead gorgeous,

anyone would feel a little flutter inside. 

But Chloe would instantly snuff out any spark of emotion before it could even start. 

She’d douse it with a bucket of cold water, putting out the fire before it could catch. 

Chloe could feel her hand trembling under Noah’s intense gaze as she reached out to check his pulse. 

The air between them had been thick with unspoken tension, but as Chloe’s green energy flowed through Noah, the mood grew heavy and serious. 

“Seriously, don’t worry about me. I’m just totally drained. Give me a couple of days to recharge, and I’ll be good as new. Or, if you want, toss me a few cores, and I’ll bounce back even faster,” Noah said. 

Noah really hated seeing Chloe stress over him. 

Chloe’s eyes snapped open as she locked onto Noah’s devastatingly handsome face. She opened her mouth and asked, “Do you feel anything weird going on with your body?” 

Noah looked completely baffled, while Spotty suddenly bristled and leapt onto the stool in a flash, its feline eyes gleaming with an uncanny light. 

Chloe and Spotty locked eyes, with Chloe giving him a no–nonsense look. “Do you know?” 

Spotty nodded its big head hard, meowing. 

This was the first time it had ever purposefully made that sound, the same one Chloe always used to mess with him. 

To Spotty, cats were nothing but lowly bugs. For it to actually meow like that was pure provocation and contempt in its mind. 

But now, just to win Chloe’s favor, it was willing to lower itself and meow, showing how much it was willing to swallow its pride for her. 

Chloe was taken aback. 

‘So, Spotty actually needs something from me,’ Chloe thought to herself. 

Chloe shot a long, searching look at the bewildered Noah, then turned to Spotty. 

She asked, “You can understand human speech, right? If you do, nod your head.” 

Spotty just meowed. 

She almost shot up from her seat. ‘No way, did Spotty actually nod?‘ she thought, wide–eyed. 

Sure, she’d had her suspicions, but seeing it for real was next–level shocking. 

‘Seriously, what kind of mutant cheetah was this? Not just some dumb beast following commands, it actually got what she was saying!‘ Chloe’s mind spun. ‘Talk about mind–blowing. 

“Here’s how it’s gonna go. If I say something that’s true, you nod, If it’s wrong, you shake your head,” Chloe said, keeping her tone firm. 

The mutant cheetah nodded again, looking surprisingly attentive. 

“So, when I first met your master, was he already poisoned?” Chloe asked, glancing at Spotty. 

Spotty nodded without hesitation.

“So, it was the poison that left him powerless when the zombies attacked, right? Chloe asked, her tone serious. 

Spotty nodded again. 

The poison in Noah was insanely rare. Back when Chloe’s abilities were still limited, she hadn’t even noticed it; she’d only patched up his external injuries. 

Maybe it was just a fluke, but the moment that poison sensed Chloe’s green energy, it slipped into hiding all by itself. 

Now that her abilities had leveled up and she was nearly a fifth–level powered human, she could finally spot the poison hiding inside him.
